Mechanical Keyboard Autism Thread - Because Cherry MX switches get you laid.

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I found extreme layering (like e.g. on a planck) actually doesn't slow you down all that much as long as you really, really customize the layout to your preferences. I could've given away at least a column on the planck in the end, seriously. It wasn't really much more practical to use though. Not faster, not slower, just sort of the same (after a bit of getting used to). What I really liked was autoshift (holding down a key a bit longer gives you the shift + key version). It's a bit slower but really comfortable for typing longer texts.

I'm personally partital to 65% layouts, as they give you dedicated navigation keys, even though these are not really traditionally needed for *nixian software. When I have more time I'll get one of these HHKB M0110 kits, as I want to try that layout some more. (I got an actual HHKB too, nice keyboard but did not care for it at all. Way too expensive for what it is.)

They’re pretty sweet. I have a vintage F122 and one of the replica kishsavers, and they’re both superb. I had to flash Vial to the kishsaver manually but the newer models should have it preinstalled, so reprogramming it is easy (if you even want to, the SSK doesn’t really need layers so it would be more for macros or convenience than to make it usable).

I might be extremely late and gay on this but cerakey finally added the little notches to their F and J keys

Extremely based, I might actually get a set now. @Null if you already know about this I apologise for the ping, however I recall you mentioned that was something holding you back from getting a set a while back, just incase you weren't across it they now have the option

What's the verdict on Keychron keyboards? I've been using the Logitech G Pro X TKL for a while now but there's something funny going on and I think it's about to die on me. Thinking of getting a Keychron. From what I understand so far, the K series are pre-assembled and less customizable. V and Q are very customizable and you can do anything with them. What about the Lemonkey or whatever that other one is? I want a TKL keyboard, want it to last me a lifetime because when I get used to them I don't wanna change them ever. Would rather it be a bit lighter, like, less than 1kg. I see the Q series are all aluminum/metal and I think they're pretty heavy.
Any suggestions? Or do I just get the Lemonkey or the V3 MAX TKL and get it over with?

For anyone interested in reasonably priced (well, apart from the ones "Inspired by the traditional Chinese craftsmanship of "gold with embedded jade," ") hall effect keyboards, DrunkDeer (possibly the greatest branding ever) has a sale on.

I have a K6 and one of their low-profile boards and they're both totally fine. I have read bad reviews of the LemoKey keyboards for being overly flimsy. If you want it to be your forever keyboard, then spending a bit more and getting something heavier would seem to make sense.

I bought V6 Max few months back, comes with Gateron Brown switches. It feels pretty nice to type on compared to what I used before. It feels sturdy, though according to the internet battery has a high chance to turn into a spicy pillow. I don't use RGBT so it lasts for about a month on charge. haven't bothered to keep track of when was the last time it was plugged in.
Keycap profile makes typing a pleasure, not too loud. Wouldn't recommend for vidya though, key reset is a bit funky, I can't describe it, takes some time to get used to it at first. I do touch typing.
I'm not a big fan of USB over internet for configuring stuff, but hey. I'll eventually get the vial working, though this whole QMK shit feels like one big security hole waiting to be exploited.

I haven't used the Keychron online configuration tool, but I assume it uses HTML5 serial (over USB) or HTML5 bluetooth interfaces, which aren't going to allow access from random websites if they aren't authorized.

If you have a problem with that I'd assume you could use the more standard QMK setup where you do your config online or fiddle round in a text editor to generate a JSON file and then upload it bundled with firmware with a regular native application- of course you would presumably have to plug your keyboard in with a cable, like a real man.

Keychron is great theyre lower end boards are a bit plasticky for me, Q series are really nice. You get a Q series and put your own switches and keycaps and it makes a really nice higher end board. I'd say a keychron q series with something like gateron milky yellow switches and it'll be better than anything you've used before imagine.

Thanks for the input mates. I just now saw my post has been answered, sorry.
A few days after I posted I just went ahead and bought 2 of the V3 MAX TKL with the volume knob. It's indeed a bit plasticky but I like that it's relatively lightweight. It came with the Gateron jupiter red switches and I love the feel. It sounds and feels amazing, especially the one I got for the office. It makes almost no noise and doesn't disturb anyone. Typing is a blast, feels so much more comfy than the Logitech G Pro. Having some buyer's remorse, maybe I should've bought the Q series. The difference in price is really negligible and I guess it would feel more...non-plasticky. Other than that I have no complaints. BUT I should buy some keycaps. I don't really like the default ones. From what I read I guess all MX-compatible keycaps will work. Can't decide on what exactly I want. Maybe I should put some white keycaps, not sure.
Also should I change the switches? You suggested the milky yellow and from what I read people love them overall. I'm not that much into gaming these days, only game I play is Marvel's Rivals for 30minutes 3 times a week or so. Maybe I should experiment with them and new keycaps. See how it looks and feels.

Also, does the battery turn into a spicy pillow if you keep it in the USB all the time? Doesn't it have that thing modern batteries have, where it stops charging it at some point and it basically keeps it all nice and cool? Mine's been plugged in non-stop. The cable is so non-intrusive that I forget it's there.

Another also, are the Cherry MX switches that much better than the Gateron? Should I buy the Cherry yellows? 50million actuations means nothing to me. The Logitech had Logitech switches with "70 million actuations lifespan" and I used it for 2 years and all of them are still top-notch, the motherboard is failing before the switches. I also did lots of Valorant and Overwatch in that time, so I expected the WASD to be failing at some point but they held their own. A colleague of mine bought some really good looking, cheap keyboard with Outemu red switches. They were supposed to be "just as good as Gateron, 50mil clicks, only cheaper" and half of them had to be replaced in 2 months. I won't need to replace the gaterons every 2 months, right? Do I need to get the Cherry MX? Are they the best of the best and actually last for years?

And as someone really new to the custom keeb thing, I found there's literally endless choices when it comes to keycaps. Can I put lower-profile keycaps on this keyboard? Do they need to be exactly like the stock ones in terms of height, or is the MX compatability all I need to look for? Do I need to look out for the space bar/shift/enter sizes?
I can put 3 pin and 5 pin switches, right?

Sorry for too many questions but I'm perma banned from reddit and thinking about making a new account there makes me feel dirty, and there's no other place I can ask. I don't wanna go over to 4chan's /g/ because I know how these questions turn into shitfling fests about what's good and what's not, and in the end there's still no answer.

I recommend the gateron milky yellows because they're probably the best sound and feel for the price. But if you've never changed switches before jt can be tedious, a switch puller is recommended. There's like a dozen or so super popular switches like holy pandas, boba u4ts, kalih box jades, lavender switches. But if you want any board to feel and sound good for cheap I recommend milky yellows or for a bit more oil kings but I prefer milky yellows.
Keycaps is a whole nother can of worms. A good keycap set can change the whole feel and sound of a board. I'm bjg into PBT MT3 profile keycaps. They're super thick. But I recommend only buying keycaps from an actual reputable site like drop.com or name brand stuff. Keychron actually makes some of the best sets. If I want something basic like white or black I'd buy the keychron keycap set off Amazon. There's a whole market of cheap Chinese keycaps that are absolutely horrible and they're everywhere. Don't buy that shit.

Cherry switches being the best is a bit of a meme nowadays. You have a regular TKL board I think so if you buy just base sets keycaps you should be fine most sets come with different size space bars and enter keys. You can just post what your looking at I'll tell you if it'll work

My Keychron keyboard came with switch puller and was configured for Mac out of box, either to encourage new users to tinker, or it's aimed at macfags. There were windows keycaps in the bag, plus spare screws and a hex wrench for servicing.

Has anyone experienced one of the split ortholinear keyboards? I'm mildly interested in getting one.

Apparently Keychron keyboards have issues with doubleclicks and stuck keys. Guess how I know...
Here's a reddit thread compiling all issues.
In my case I experienced it first while playing games, my character would get stuck strafing right, it wouldn't happen often, but lately I had problems with sudo rejecting my password, at first I thought that it was systemd retardation or my drive getting corrupted but eventually after some googling I found the thread above.
For now I ended up updating firmware for the dongle and keyboard, if issue persists I will mess with debounce settings and if that doesn't help then it's time for different switches I guess.
