So if I'm understanding the legalese correctly, they're removing the $200 tax, but keeping the registry? Or am I just retarded?
So the registry is staying, which makes this not much of a victory. I still doubt it will pass, but even if it does pass, it is still really not meaning much if you have to be put on the "raid this guy first" list to participate, not to mention the legal problems with registered arms and accessories. I suppose the only benefit is hoping that enough people begin buying SBRs that the list becomes functionally worthless due to the number of people on the registry.
The bill changes the definition of an NFA regulated firearm to:
The term “firearm” means a machine gun or a destructive device.
from:
The term “firearm” means (1) a shotgun having a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length; (2) a weapon made from a shotgun if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length; (3) a rifle having a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length; (4) a weapon made from a rifle if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length; (5) any other weapon, as defined in subsection (e); (6) a machinegun; (7) any silencer (as defined in section 921 of title 18, United States Code); and (8) a destructive device.

It gets rid of the registry and also removes the tax as a backup plan.

My bad, I half read it while making breakfast, so that was on me. Thank you for the clarification. I would very much like to be wrong and have a solid win on the federal level.

I really hope it passes. There is really no legitimate reason short barreled shotguns and rifles should be restricted the way they are. Same with sound suppressors. While the 2A absolutist in me says the same for machine guns, I can also play Devil's Advocate enough to see why normies would still want restrictions, though with us being in the days where every nigger has a "GLOCK wid da switch and da tiddy hangin' off" flashing it around in homemade rap videos on Tik-Tok, it really is a senseless restriction as well. But getting SBRs/SBSs and cans deregulated would be a huge victory. Hopefully it passes so it will be that much easier to SBS and suppress my Origin 12.

The real difficulty comes from the arguments needed to justify it to people who believed that they were never legal in the first place because they've never needed to think about it. It sounds absurd to the everyman but that's who they need to either explain it to or slip by. Cities are shit and public opinion blames ideas and objects as opposed to the weak-willed giving in to impulsive thoughts.
Even if someone doesn't have a need or burning desire, the removal of this bullshit keeps people from falling into a bottomless legal moneypit and that's justification enough.

The only place I've seen Krag ammo for sale is an outdoor flea market and a weird hybrid store that also has guns. I'd love to try one
Come over I'll let you shoot mine. I'm the nice guy at the range if you eye my shit I'm going to hand you a mag to try.

80 bucks for Krag ammo now?!?! Ugh I'm behind the times and more thankful I reload. You can use 303 brass easy too. Helps cut costs.

I have a good feeling on SBRs coming back before cans on a fed level. As @The Dude said everyone has a switch or bent coat hanger.

Even the anti gun people will have to bend a knee "it'll help the poor criminals who glawk switch and cut down a Ruger 10/22" so they don't do firearm fed time. Dey good boys just holding likka stores up.

As far as Krag ammo goes, I believe only a couple of manufacturers load for it (like Remington) and they only do so in limited runs right before deer season. My Mom has a Krag carbine that she inherited from my Grampa and wanted to buy ammo for it a few years back. She had a hard time finding any, and when she did she bought up as many boxes as she could. When she asked why it was so hard to come by, she was told it's only made in limited runs once per year.

Be happy, very happy. Shoot it a lot and honor who left it to you.
Continue the trend. Go take deer with it and give it to the next kid to also take deer with when you get old.
Will do, I just bought some ammo for it and I already feel like a kid again holding it as well as cycling the lever. Just needs to be cleaned.

I meant what sort of aftermarket upgrades should I go for to modernize it? (rails, muzzle brakes, scopes, etc.) The marlin is a 336W from 2006. I might just put a rail and an optic on it.

Well I recently received my order from Hunters Lodge, so Ill go over it here for anyone interested in making a purchase there

1. Broken Stock Spanish FR8. Price: $88 The FR8 is a Spanish m43 mauser that was rechambered and reconfigured to match the Cetme C series rifles. The one I received was in acceptable condition. It certainly has a fair bit of pitting, but other than that all the metal parts are fully serviceable, the handguard is also usable and the bore is fantastic with bright shiny crisp rifling. The stock was destroyed, having been broken in 3 pieces with a massive crack behind the receiver tang. I've already sourced a replacement stock. Given the prices these things go for, it was well worth the cost.

2. Long Lee. Price paid: $110. Hunters Lodge advertises these as "Boer War Leftovers" which I doubt. All the ones they have there are sporterized, and were likely part of a hunting lodges arsenal. They may have cut down barrels, or full length barrels. It is important to note that these are Lee rifles, not necessarily Lee-Enfields. Some may be a Lee Speed, which was the commercial variant. Mine was a BSA, with a full length barrel, with complete volley sights. The foreend was cut down, though it did still have the middle barrel band. The rear sight is original and proper for a Long Lee Enfield. However, I have found 2 problems so far. First, the bolt sent was a drill purpose bolt and of course cannot be used (Hunters Lodge has drill purpose SMLEs so I'll chalk that up to an accident). Secondly and more critically, it has a 2 inch crack in the barrel up at the muzzle. I'm currently trying to get a ahold of someone there and see if I can get these parts replaced, a replacement rifle, or a Rebate.

3. Styer Hahn. Price paid: $310. This one has wound up being a little bit of a booger. Though its in serviceable enough condition, its currently missing a few small parts, though Hunters Lodge did send some parts with it. The problem is that nearly all parts for these guns are unobtainium, so this project may get shelved for the very long term.

All in all I got one win, one loss, and one tie. I'm still happy given the prices that these guns go for on the open market. I'll update this post later about the Long Lee in regards to what Hunters Lodge is/is not willing to do.

To quote the great shit poster from /k/ NYET RIFLE IS FINE.

Seriously leave it be it's good as is.

Holy shit those are deals!!! I love my fr8 it's one of my favorite deer guns it looks kick ass, handy comfy to carry etc. Dig up a bayonet for it you'll thank me later.

I don't have a long Lee now you got me wanting look at shit I don't need or have room for. I'm not restoring anything ATM so I guess that's an excuse.

You're right, you can't enhance a historical piece with family ties, plus it'd make the rifle heavier and cumbersome. I'm also broke since I just bought an AR10.

Pimp that AR if you need to play with stuff when your bank is settled.

Remember this is a hobby always keep your finances settled. I'm sure you mean broke as in toy money not I cant pay rent but... Just throwing advice out for anyone who is under a "need gun" mind set.

Whats the specs on the 10? Barrel length furniture etc.

Glad you decided to leave it alone. Modern toys are cool with all the LEGO. But sometimes you just wanna play cowboy. Hard to do that with a skull shaped comp and a red dot.

Not broke in the literal sense, all my fun money is dried up and I have to wait a bit.

It's this AR10 that I just bought a warcomp flash hider for it using my TF2 items I sold:

Probably going to focus purely on buying ammo in the future, haven't bought 5.56/.223 in ages. It's better to stockpile ammo for the guns you do have then buying a new gun and taking more time to buy ammo for it.

How's the ammo industry? is it getting better? I hear sig made clap on, clap off ammo.

gentlemen, i have a 1998 USP .45 that has now reached:

28,150 .45 ACP
9,335 .45 ACP +P (specifically a mix of 185gr golden sabers and 200gr speer)
2,000 .45 Super (mix of 230 and 250 gr, not sure the exactly split but a lot of starline homebrew and winchester loads with like a box of buffalo bore thrown in)
100 rounds of .460 Rowland

original recoil spring, although i have a spare one. just started getting inconsistent ejection on my usual loads (.45 +p 200gr underwood JHP's) so new recoil spring time it is. after detail strip, other than being a bit dirty here and there, it's got a lot of life left in the bore and frame. photo is during the take down to illustrate wear a bit.
Crack!
Siiiiiiiiip!

Yup. That forty five ACP. Best caliber there is son. Even the krauts know what's going on.

I am somewhat curious about a modernized lever action in either 45 Colt or 357 magnum with a threaded barrel and pic rail, but I would buy one of the modern versions for that kind of thing, not customize an existing rifle for it, especially one I inherited. Would be neat to be the future space cowboy with a red dot and suppressor, plus you get the tacticool black plastic.

I'd like to get a 45-70 maybe 10-20 years into the future if I ever get supper serious into hunting. I hear they make loads stronger and faster than the 300 win. I also want something to shoot to kick me on my ass occasionally just for fun.

Hodge "Mod 3" rail system. They want $1500 for it when for $1375 you can buy an LMT MRP, get a CHF-CL barrel of your choice and send it to D. Wilson for conversion to the MRP Interface for $1375 before taxes and shipping. And with that you get an actual monolithic rail

worn recoil spring impede ejection
it is less consistent when shooting hot ammo and switching to more normal target ammo or competition puff loads, especially with a suppressor. the Browning tilting breech lock up requires relatively consistent slide velocity to allow the spent case (held to the breechface by the extractor) to impact the ejector in a consistent way so it cams out and clear of the ejection port. i was experiencing odd ejection patterns and in severe cases if this was allowed to continue, may result in failure to eject or failure to fully return to battery on a chamber that has a bunch of carbon in it from shooting suppressed frequently and not being fastidious in cleaning it out.

Got the email to certify my Form 1 this morning. Got that all done and the Tax Stamp paid for. Now all that's left is the waiting. My bro just bought his first NFA item, a SilencerCo Osprey 2.0 .45 suppressor. His approval was under two days. My last NFA item got approved in one week. So we'll see how it goes.

Be very careful on both pricing and condition. Military Surplus in general is rife with overpriced and worn-out guns.

.30-40 is very expensive, about $80 for 20 rounds.

If you want a gun just to have one, please buy something new. Surplus and old guns are a can of worms if you have no idea what you're doing.
I appreciate the logical advice. The real appreciation of something like a historical long gun would be the beauty of it, to hang on the wall. But, you're absolutely right, in terms of a functional firearm to practice regularly, no way. I have a valuable MK IV 1911 and a box of .45s but I'd rather keep it as a show piece for collector value (real ivory grips too).
Sako 100 is very expensive but it could be the buy it for life rifle.
