Mega Rad Gun Thread

Alright, time to decide what gun I buy next. I have the following:

Mossberg 450Bushmaster - Shoots deer.
Browning BPS 12GA 3" chamber, with rifled and field barrels - small game/waterfowl
AR15 in .223/5.56 - bought off of someone, I think the upper/lower are DPMS? They set it up for coyote hunting.
Sar9 - A basic handgun to get used to handling one.
Type 99 Arisaka - Handed down to me by my grandfather. Just fun to shoot

Not looking for anything in particular. Thinking either a .22 for small game/give to my child if I ever have one, a new AR for tacticool/boogaloo/home defense, or a more traditional deer rifle for when I'm in areas without exceptional caliber restrictions.

Bonus points for historical firearms or wood stocks.

Get a cheap Mossberg 60 or 795, spend the rest outfitting that AR you already have into one you want to use. (unless you have a coyote problem I suppose)

Finnish M39 mosin, the best parts of firing 7.62x54r with something really sweet operating and accurate. Added bonus if you find one marked in the 1960's.

Good luck finding one for less than the price of a good AR/AK. The days of hopping on Gunboards & finding Sako's like they were cherries are long past.

Question: Any suggestions on active hearing protection? I came across "Howard Leight by Honeywell Impact Pro" on Amazon for $57 a piece, and the reviews seem OK. I need two pairs and don't want to spend several hundred.

they work reasonably well for most people. you can also just use normal ear plugs, or fitted earplugs for your specific ears. surefire sonic defenders also work fairly well. unless you have some specific purpose like fitting under or in conjunction with a helmet, or specific profile, power system, communications standard, et c; just go with what works. same for eye protection.

I ask because I'm going to start bringing a newb to the (indoor) range and don't want to have to scream at the top of my lungs for them to hear me. I've never used active hearing protection before so no idea if they're just a gimmick.

They aren't, but if there's rifles at that indoor range you might want earplugs inside active.

I still see the 200 round spam cans of Greek M2 Ball around; prices have gone up, but it's good ammo to have.

If you shoot anything else, just make sure it's 150 grain. But I've known guys who exclusively shoot 140 grain, and they've never bent an op rod.

The ammo I was looking at from SG is Turkish from the 1960's in 400 round ammo cans. Worth it?

the ammunition itself is good, but Turkish surplus ammunition can have pretty poor storage conditions. i would assume SG has already weeded out the corroded stuff, but otherwise you will spend a bit of time doing cleaning/scrubbing.

With all these 3d and 80% glock frames out there, is there a "glock" Nodak? Someone making a knock off G1 frame? As a collector I'd like a OG g1 g17 gosh... it's a collectors item now. But I'm also happy having "something like" vs a real deal at least on my beer budget for time being.

Speaking of building things, took my friend who's been into shooting for about 10 years now, out for a nice range day and she's wanting to build an AR. It's a mixed blessing getting friends into the sport/hobby, but then guess who's doing all the building/reloading/cleaning.

I should charge more ... because when you say beer sometimes you get Dog Fish Head... tonight I got bud lite wtf.

A 10/22 is practically a rite of passage for gun owners, and you can make it as cheap or fancy as you want with the enormous aftermarket and numerous clones.

Get the one with the Mannlicher style stock if.you want a retro wood and steel feel.

none of the ones i've handled or have in inventory are particularly sharper than any other Heine sight design.

A 10/22 is practically a rite of passage for gun owners, and you can make it as cheap or fancy as you want with the enormous aftermarket and numerous clones.

Get the one with the Mannlicher style stock if.you want a retro wood and steel feel.

Or just put one together from scratch using your choice of receiver and barrel. It's easier than putting together an AR. Fitting the barrel is the most difficult part about it, and even that just requires some careful applications of sandpaper and then bluing compound.

I find myself getting the urge to build another AR for some reason. Debating killing two birds with one stone by doing an AR-10 build in 6.5 CM since all my current rifles are either .22 or intermediate calibers.

That's an interesting option I'll need to think on (and wouldn't require new mags to boot!). Funny thing about the height of the most recent ammo shortage is that I couldn't find 5.56/.223 anywhere, but all the local shops had plenty of weird shit like .450 Bushmaster and .50 Beowulf available.
