yes, and people have done it in .45 Long Colt, .38 ACP, even 9x25mm Mauser, although not magazine fed. the basic layout is convenient for large calibers with the sole exception of needing a robust breechblock that can deal with the pressure generated as well as cycle reliably without magazine overruns. with a C96, the breechblock is back far enough that poor cycling is prone to failures much more so than on a more typical browning layout where the feed is controlled by portions of the frame, slide, and breech to active guide the cartridge into position.Hey @Club Sandwich , is my stupid idea of a modernized C96 in .454 Casull even possible?
