Bring me up to speed on the suppressor situation. Can I waltz into the store now and just buy one?

I have a Sako 90. Would recommend.

Tho if you want something cool and vintage (looking) to hang on the wall then get a Henry Brass Lever gun. It even comes in 45-70 if you want an outdated, expensive round to go with it.

Sako anything is considered a dream gun for most hunters and long range shooters, you wont go wrong. If you want oldschool, however, I'd recommend a Steyr Mannlicher in .30-06 or equivalent. Not many people use them anymore but they've got an iconic look.

It's been placed in the Big Beautiful Bill, which is an omnibus. It will have to pass through the Senate once again because the SHORT Act was added, then it will have to pass through Congress after the trash has been picked off.
Roughly 90 days after the BBB is passed(and the HPA and SHORT act are still attached), suppressors and SBR/SBS/AOW firearms will be removed from the NFA. You will still need to fill out a 4473 for suppressors, so far as anyone can tell, but no registry nor fingerprinting.

This is just on the federal level though does it mean states can still regulate and restrict them?

I assume so and would bet on there being some after people realize what's happened, but there will be no more federal registry. Generally speaking anywhere that's popular for hunters would be fucking stupid to place any restrictions on them because of how popular they've become.
 
I definitely like Sako and Steyr bolt guns, but my dream "hunting rifle" is one built on a Mauser controlled feed action. I like Winchester Model 70s alot, but always wanted a nice European Mauser-style bolt rifle. I had hoped to one day buy a new CZ 550 Safari, but sadly CZ discontinued their Mauser-style rifles and I don't care for the new rifle line they replaced the 550 with. And I don't have $13k+ to buy a new (or used) Mauser 98 safari rifle.

It has state preemption built into the bill iirc. Fact check me. I know many states do ban these if not nfa registrered. In theory with state preemption federal law prevails
 
Remarkably, here in Britain we're getting the first loosening of the gun laws in living memory! Rather than having to have a license "slot" to buy a suppressor in a specific calibre, they're going to become OTC on showing a firearms license. I am going to buy so many cheap and nasty rimfire suppressors.

Personally what I'm looking forward to most is being able to get an 11.5 inch CAR-15 clone with a moderator without bullshit paperwork or an additional 200 dollar tax.

original recoil spring, although i have a spare one. just started getting inconsistent ejection on my usual loads (.45 +p 200gr underwood JHP's) so new recoil spring time it is. after detail strip, other than being a bit dirty here and there, it's got a lot of life left in the bore and frame. photo is during the take down to illustrate wear a bit.

If there's one handgun I would lay on a table for a first time shooter to hold and fuck around with it's the USP a solid foundation on the basics and they're built like bulldozers coming from a guy who owns a KE stamped .40 cal version with the bored out barrel.

if you've ever used 12 gauge 3 1/2 shells 10 gauge will feel better on the shoulder.

Ten gauge has the distinct advantage of people seeing the titanic shells and assuming you must be the biggest badass in town for shooting it. They're usually too intimidated to shoot it and find out that it's not too bad, once you learn that it's easier to just ride it out than to try to drive it like a rifle.

You mean an additional $400 in tax stamps. $200 for the SBR, and $200 for the moderator since they're considered sound suppressors by the ATF/law. I'd have a hard time deciding between an XM177 or a Colt 607. Both are so Cold War sexy. I think I like the stock on the 607 better.

Edit: if SHORT does pass, I definitely think I'll get the stock for my FK Brno PSD. They sell one that attaches to a metal bracket at the base of the grip/mag well and folds up when removed. Kinda like the stock for the Beretta 93r, but the way it attaches is different. Not really worth it to spend $200 and file a Form 1 to convert a normal style pistol to an SBR, but totally worth it for the stock to be considered just a normal accessory like they were back in the early day of auto pistols like the C96 and Luger. Especially with the range and accuracy potential of the 7.5fk cartridge. The PSD and Field Pistol were both designed from the get-go to optionally use the stock.
