i fount a cool photograph:
A woman poses with the tiger she shot. India, circa 1860s.
The gun she has is a smooth bore SxS fired with ball. until the nitro revolution in the 1890s, the best way to stop a dangerous animal was a large bore gun firing very heavy projectiles (often round balls). Most were not rifled because they were intended for use at close range, and rifled 12, 10, 8 and 4 gauge guns recoil was fierce. These guns were similar to shotguns but were built heavier with thicker barrels and stronger stocks and actions.
This type of gun eventually evolved into the "Shot & Ball" guns. A heavy smoothbore with rifled chokes. Westley-Richards boasted that when fired with their ammuniton, their shot & ball guns were capable of hitting game out to 300 yards.
Their "capped" bullets for their shot & ball guns were perhaps the first ballistic-tip expanding ammuniton to be mass produced.
