I just built a rifle that has an ARCA rail so I'm thinking a decent shooting tripod would be nice. Something basic. I mean how complicated can that be? So I google.

What are we doing people?

Finished up my VZ-58 reweld. It's been lazily painted with basic Rustoleum spray paint but once it gets warm again I'll do a proper phosphate and paint job with Duracoat so that all the parts match. Despite being milled, its significantly lighter than an AKM which is wild. Its not perfect but I think its alright considering that it was done with MIG and a dremel.

Springfield's been using forged frames in the US for 10-15 years now.
Good to know, this means mine is USA 😎
I finally started CCWing a hammer fired pistol thanks to the platypus this year. As much as I could complain about not have the premium of a steel frame 2011; the weight really makes it a great compromise for me.

That's a big CCW

Platypus, Kimber, SIG, and Romulus all make excellent 2011s for under $2k

Oh, it’s winter only for sure. But it was the perfect transition from my duty G17. Just swap over the mags, sro, and streamlight to a new base and feels like home. The only bad thing I have to say about it was this slip.

IDK about that shit lol

SHOT Show 2026 seems to be slow to start, or at least nobody's showing anything good or revolutionary. The .32 ACP Beretta 80x LTT is allegedly going to start shipping, Beretta's got more expensive clay guns and A300 in 20 gauge is a thing. Sig is pushing a new 365 variant and the 2011s.

Just took another look on YouTube,
Steyr's new P226 and 229 AT series of pistols

Rock Island is importing their own foldy shotgun with spring-assisted pump, potentially ripping off the Turks. I saw another video showing a not-a-shotgun shockwave variant.

Misc exploration of range day from a not-terrible presenter

I suggest wrapping the handguards with gauze and grip tape, they conduct heat like crazy and will burn your hand.
Yeah I was kinda disappointed by that. I'll be swapping it out for a wood set that will hopefully be a better insulator. One of the things that surprised me about the VZ58 is that the gas tube is open on the bottom so the gas just vents directly into the handguard instead of the receiver or through holes at the front of the tube like on an AKM. I'd imagine that's probably the culprit

I've gotten away with just wearing gloves, but heat is really an issue for the VZ. I found a guy that sold aluminum upper an lower handgaurds way back to mitigate it. They were also pic rails, so I added an angled foregrip as well. IDK if anyone is still doing that anymore though, but if the wood set still heats up just some padding should help.

Are you actually using 10 round mags.

Put a hot pocket on it.

No, it's just because WA did the >10rd import law in '22; and as a buyer that slip they included was a little eyebrow raising to me in terms of corner cutting when you get 2 OEMs and 2 pmags. The 10rd'ers are great for bill drilling on the weekend still though.

yeah, IMBEL cut their contract and Springfield had to find other sources. The IMBEL frames were good. even with the foreign frames the rest was all american.

S&W and lipseys are ressurrecting the night guard line of revolvers (no-lock). these are scandium framed with steel cylinders, primarily for carry and duty service. the m/396 is a .44 special and the 386 is a 7-shot .357 magnum.

I'm tempted but I'd rather have the 325 .45 ACP that was in the original run 15 years ago. alas, i was only 12 at the time and couldn't get one.

Colt is releasing blued steel Anaconda's in .44 in 4in, 6in and 8in SKUs, Blued Cobra's and more optics ready 1911s.

I'm definitely a buyer for a 4in royal blue anaconda.

P10, VP9, M&P, PDP, etc are all interchangeable. The only real difference is how you feel about them. Put any in my hand it won’t affect my performance.

Many people are just gonna swap the trigger anyway.
As someone who owns both a P10 and a VP9 the are not interchangeable. The P10 has a fantastic trigger with an extreme short trigger reset distance. The VP9 has an alright trigger but can’t win over the P10. It’s not unheard of VP9 owners to swap out triggers for Lazy Wolfs to make the distance shorter. The P10 also has a distinct advantage over not being move in the event of a jam. The VP9 gives a little and then stops similar to Glock and Sig P320. The P10 series is also way cheaper and I would recommend them to new shooters if they don’t want all the customization Glock has.

I've had the pleasure of shooting a P-10C (still own it) and the displeasure of shooting a VP9 (shot a friend's, only took me two magazines to decide I hated it).

The P-10C has the best trigger I've ever experienced in a handgun under $400: as you said, it has a super short trigger reset distance and the takeup is smooth and consistent. The VP9, by comparison, was absolute dogshit: very tough break with slop, anything 6 pounds or over for a semi-auto is almost intolerable to me.

The thing that really sent me for a loop about the VP9 was the ergonomics. It's one of the most unintelligent, flimsy, poorly-executed grips I've ever seen in a handgun, almost beating out the Gen 4 Glock 19 I used to own in terms of pure suckass. I have, among other things, an XD Mod.3 that aims for the same rough concept in terms of grip that the VP9 does, and yet it does it far better. The VP9 opened my groups up so wide, I thought it was taking an Andy Ditch-style shit.

As someone that has carried budget-style guns in the past and currently carries borderline-Gucci shit, I can tell you the CZ P-10 platform is a great choice for CCW on a budget.
