Microsoft buys Bethesda for 7.5 billion.

or as Last Stand said Sony already got a ton of exclusive companies under their belt, like didn't they just buy insomniac?
I don't know how many companies Sony has under their belt. I'm just going by games. Marvel's Spider-Man, Bloodbourne, Days Gone, God of War, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima to name a few were critical and commerical successes for Sony.

What does MS have besides Gears, Halo and Forza? Super Lucky's Tale, Recore, Sea of Theives, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive. That's all I can think of. They didn't exactly perform well critically.

Let's see if this newly acquired talent would churn out some compelling games that would solidify MS against Sony. I'm not counting Nintendo because they are in a league of their own.

You do know that Bethesda has made games BEFORE the acquisition, right? Arkane, MachineGames, and ID are well tested and Tango along with Beth Gameworks have people like Shinji Mikami and Todd Howard, who atleast know how to get people to get their wallets out. Lies nonwithstanding.

Capcom is probably the first company Sony will set its eyes on due to its history with them since PS1, if not Square. If Sony wants to get defensive, or they feel as if their bottom line is going to take a hit, they'll open the bank. I think part of the reason they bought Insomniac was because of 1. Spiderman and 2. because Microsoft was floating buying them. Do you really think the partner for 2 of their launch exclusives going "bye-bye" is going to go ignored or unnoticed?

It makes sense. It's not like MS is doing well in Japan anyway.

Looking at todd's statement it looks like they are trying to not be tied down to a single console might just be PR bullshit though

You know with Microsoft at the forefront I kind of wonder if shit like Eider Scroll & Fallout will finally get new engines?
They just confirmed that Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI use an "overhauled" engine, which sounds like the same shit they've been using to me.
Remember when Microsoft bought Rare and then prevented them from doing anything outside re-releases/remakes and kinect bullshit especially since games like BK:Nuts'n'Bolts didn't do too well?

The counter point to that is how they've been treating their more recent acquisitions. Obsidian, inExile, and Mojang have been pretty much just allowed to do whatever they want in making and porting their games. Minecraft Dungeons even got a physical releases on PS4 and Switch, but not XB1. Lucky's Tale and Cuphead also got ported everywhere eventually. More than anything, I think that Microsoft wants content for their subscription and cloud-based stuff, and any traditional releases are just extra revenue.

EDIT As for Obsidian or inExile getting their hands on a Bethesda IP game, that's not going to happen any time soon unless people from one of their studios lobby for it. As beloved as New Vegas was, it wasn't the biggest financial or critical success. At least the door is open now.

Yeah pretty much, I think the logic is since games are getting to be around 70 bucks a pop and with the current price of consoles, that gamepass being a shit ton of games for a flat subscription rate letting people just buy the games they 100% they know they want. it's like the old school demos of the ps1 era mixed with a netflix style subscription service. which is genius from the company that one console generation ago tried to fuck people hard with the Xbone.

Is Sony in a position to pull off a major acquisition? I mean I can see them buying Konami so they own MGS, Contra, and Castlevania. Or just buy the rights to those franchises. I don't if Kojima even has anything left to say for MGS, other than maybe finishing up MGS5 proper.

Can they just make Bethesda games work?
No. Microsoft can barely make Windows 10 just work.
The focus on console trash is why Bethesda games don't work.
Daggerfall has never been on console. That game is more like a 1000 hour glitch with some game included.

Guess Bethesda decided to marry their dear old friend Microsoft. May they ride upon armored horses.

Also I don't know if Sony is capable of purchasing a studio right now, while this generation went well for them due to no competition they are now entering a new era which needs a lot more investment in the physical side and the gaming department of Sony is the only strong part of the company so they may not want to risk that by then buying a studio just to spite MS.

Sony had more critically acclaimed exclusives this gen than MS. I see no reason for Sony to even consider that route other than to be douches. MS has been more pro-consumer lately, which is working to their advantage.

Cross-play, cross-buy, Game Pass, backwards compatibility. All they need to do is make games other than Halo, Gears and Forza to attract a larger fanbase. So far, only Sony is doing that.
It’s probably also worth noting that Sony might not have the resources to do something of that magnitude. Last I checked Sony’s gaming division is the only part of the company that makes any noteworthy amount of money. No one really buys Sony’s electronics anymore. Their film division is so zombified that they’re kept aloft solely by Spiderman, which they had to effectively outsource back to Disney because they can’t do anything semi-watchable with the IP.

I wonder if microsoft is gonna do anything with the id-tech engine....

Anyway, for all those hoping that konami will get owned by somebody actually decent ...SORRY!
Konami is huge. FUCKING HUGE. Bigger than EA.
Imagine if EA owned casinos and gyms. IMAGINE IF EA OWNED FUCKING HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS.

Imagine if EA was also privately owned by some looney family that does what ever they want and would laugh off any offers no matter how huge.

Now Twitter wants Sony to buy Konami in retaliation to microsoft's purchase
Konami is a Yakuza front, they will not be sold, to much dirt in the books, same goes for Sega.

Say if its Capcom or Square, goodbye to multiplats like RE, DMC, FF, Neir, Dragon Quest, SF, Megaman, MH, and others because Sony wants them on their system only. Its going to lead to an outright consolidation war where noone wins in the end. If I can't play RE because of this down the line, I'm going to have a shitfit.

Sony doesnt have the money to buy them... Capcom is 6 billions now, the asking price would be a bit higher+ their debt-
Square is even more expensive. the are also both already on team sony and just have some games on xbox.

Sony turning around and trying to buy Capcom in reaction to this isn't that far out of left field now.
It is. capcom stonks are around all times highs...

None of the AAA Japanese companies are likely to get bought out by Sony. A lot of these companies also do pachinko machines.

I agree with the rest of your post but this part bothers me. Fans of Rare tend to forget that Microsoft did allow Rare creative freedom over a project three times.

And they bombed. They bombed so hard that Microsoft down sized them and enslaved them to work on projects approved by commitee like the aforementioned Nuts n Bolts

Todd is playing his hand way too early this time

Remember that Fallout New Vegas was 1 point or so from the metacritic away to grant Obsidian a bonus pay or the shitstain of fallout 76?
I´m saying that Bethesda most likely isn´t worth 7,5 billion.
edit: maybe todd used his sweet special move "16x the detail" to increase the amount of money needed to buy bethesda
