Microsoft will unveil the next version of Windows on June 24th - What's next after Windows 10?

Are there sentient people who can type words out there who seriously believe that there is a community of people (which they themselves do not belong to) who base their buying decisions for... laptops, and tablets... on them NOT HAVING A CAMERA FOR VIDEOCONFERENCING?
If I were someone's boss and I saw them videoconferencing on a fucking phone, I'd fire them. That's the only device that automatically has a front-facing cam.
That MS expects home users to have equipment that many likely don't or won't have is very head scratching.
And the number of people who can't "just upgrade bro so you can CONSOOOOM" probably vastly outnumber the people who refuse to have it for some ideological reason.

Why does your family care what OS you put on your computer?
They're worried I'll break it, mainly. I've broken at least one device trying to mod it in the past. Like I said, tech and parts are pretty unaffordable these days and I do need a computer of some sort, so if mine breaks, I'm shit out of luck.

Stupid question: Would a dual-boot be any safer? Would dual-booting not activate the Windows spyware on the Linux partition while also giving me a failsafe in case shit goes sideways or I need to use something that doesn't work in Wine?

I obviously agree. The only reason to join a videoconference from a mobile phone would be because you want to take a shit or jack off more conveniently while pretending to pay attention.

Personally, I have only done that while taking a shit, and I turned the camera off (and muted the audio).

Can you name a business laptop that doesn't have a front-facing cam?
And yes, there are people out there that seek out laptops without webcams. People who prioritize privacy that you see covering their cameras with tape go nuts when they find a new one with no camera at all.
Really. Name one. Show us the nutso hype among actual purchasers.
It's amazing that Win11 might require home users to have an internet connection and front-facing cam given that the digital divide still exists.

When the pandemic resulted in schools switching exclusively to online learning, we learned pretty quickly that plenty of people lacked internet access and/or computers that could support virtual learning platforms. That MS expects home users to have equipment that many likely don't or won't have is very head scratching. Then again, one can easily argue MS cares more about its bottom line than giving end users what they want/need. With that in mind, Win11 makes sense from their POV if not from an end user's.
Ah yes, the big 'digital divide' between poor people who only own high end gaming desktops without front-facing cameras and rich people who own $50 Android phones and tablets or just basically any laptop from the past decade with a front facing camera.

Reminder, retard, this doesn't stop people upgrading. It means that some $250 'Windows Laptop' can't be sold, new, as 'Windows 11 compatible' without a front facing camera, as required for... virtual learning platforms.

This reminds me of an old /g/ story where anon had to deal with his sister using his laptop to pirate shit and get viruses as a result. So he installed Linux on it, and when the inevitable happened his sister went running to the mother that the computer was broken and needed to be taken to the shop, where the Windows version of the time was installed (I forget, but let’s say it was Vista for maximum salt).
Anon was beyond livid, obviously.

Moral of the story: if you do go full loonix, uh maybe tell your family about your decision.

Third world countries are the ones that are going to get more fucked, i make a living repairing computers and i think in like 5 years i only have see 3-5 machines with UEFI and not a single one of them had fancy BIOS screens, pure blue screen like we were in the 80, no safe boot, not a single ssd and nvme are legendary artifacts that only the true privileged as ever see

Im definitely modding window 11 if i'm forced to install it thats it

Here's a guide for doing that with Windows 10 and Mint.

Interesting take.

Now, 'Windows 10 compatibility' has required UEFI booting by default, and Secure Boot enabled by default (which additionaly requires a TPM), for new machines from about a year after it launched.

It's been more than five years.

Have you seen more than 5 machines running Windows 10?

Nope, i have installed it in some machines but no one has brought me something beyond Window 7 and very rarely they bring cheap HP's that came with Window 8 from factory
Soooo.. it sounds like extra requirements for a device to be advertised as 'Windows 11 compatible' vs. 'Windows 10 compatible' will not affect insane kooks who think zionist sanctions on the people of Venezuela are a good thing?

Good to know.

I'm afraid I don't understand your complaint.

I don't like them either, but I don't believe I have a constituency for this.
EDIT: Wait, this is even funnier. You do realize what "official compatibility" means right, you drooling retards? It means that Microsoft can require OEMs who want to sell "Windows 11 compatible" PCs after x date to provide certain features. Like, if you buy a new Acer piece of shit laptop in two years, it can't come with Windows 11 or advertise itself as Win 11 compatible if it doesn't have DirectX 12 support. It doesn't mean that your PC will stop receieving security updates in 2023 if you don't provide DirectX 12 or a front-facing cock ring.
Yes. If I want a webcam I can plug something into the USB, thats what they are for. You're naive if you think it isnt fucked up that MS requires you to have a fucking webcam. Why would they require me to have something like that, if it weren't for spying? "Oh but they don't spy on people", yeah there is absolutely zero telemetry in windows, Alexa and Siri havend normalised people being spied on and haven't totally listened to everything people say. How will you know when MS isn't spying on you? If I could purchase a device with no microphone or webcam built in, I would. The safest way to handle microphones/webcams is to have external ones that you plug in only when you want them to be plugged in.
It requires an account with an internet connection to set up, it has shit tons of bloat spying on you, and it has a front facing webcam as a requirement. Yep, this is totally not a creepy corporation overstepping when you just wanted an OS to let you edit word documents and browse the web.

Microsoft is also requiring a front-facing camera for all Windows 11 devices except desktop PCs from January 2023 onwards.

You can't make this shit up.
It's even worse when you consider that many companies wont let you bring in camera equipment of any kind. Just imagine pulling out your laptop with it's HD webcam on the shop floor of Boeing or one of Lockheed Martin's R&D facilities. It isn't just defence contractors either, go to any large car manufacturers and pull your phone out and you'll be kicked out.

If you're gonna dualboot I'd advise to use a second HDD/SSD for it unless you're using a laptop or something. In the past I used to dualboot Windows and Linux and Windows bootloader doesn't play nice with Linuxs bootloaders sometimes to put it nice and simply.
Easier to just pick the HDD from BIOS and less likely to shit the bed during an update from either OS.

Also you're not likely to break actual hardware using Linux, at worst it could be a software issue, basically no different than Windows in that regard.
If you manage to kill your hardware installing Ubuntu I will actually be impressed.

Back when I'd somehow accidentally get into "arguments" online with people about Win10 over its telemetry, they'd usually just reguritate buzzwords and other nonsense at me. "It improves and tailors the user experience!" "If Windows 10 spied on people, we'd know." and my favorite; "Just compile Windows XP if you're so worried, its source was leaked recently."

The point is that MS is requiring manufacturers to sell you a webcam if they want to put the "Works With Windows 11" sticker on the box. As far as anyone knows right now, there's no indication that Win11 will refuse to run on a machine that doesn't have a webcam.

You can customize a Lenovo and just not get one.
Which ones still let you do that? Doesn't seem to be an option on the T or P series at least.
The best I was able to find anywhere is that Purism laptops and some low-end HPs have physical killswitches for the camera.

The fun part is that the russians notice that the lock is exclusively on the installer, apparently it runs a hardware check and if you dont have what they ask, it will refuse the installation but if you put the window 10 file it just accept it as its own because is just the same installer with the logo swapped, Window 11 runs without any issue with all that crap they are asking

Edit: also home edition is still activated with the same scripts, nothing has changed in that regard

I think what a lot of people are overlooking is that 99% of this is oriented towards normies. Normies just want something that works. Normies want a built in webcam, because it just works, they're fine with Defender because for the normie it's perfectly fine.

I switched to Linux for good back in the 2000/XP days when hardware support was still really hit-or-miss and when I see threads like this I'm reminded that was a good decision. I can't even imagine having that little power over what's actually going on with my computer or why people would put up with that shit. The signs were all already there back then, it's what actually made me switch. That being said Linux Userland is under attack by the same monolithic corpo bullshit too and you have to pick your software very carefully and go off-path and ignore the popular stuff, but hey, at least you can still.

Also as it has been mentioned, if you have to run really old Windows software and don't want to emulate anything WINE is the way to go. It's much more compatible to old stuff than current day Windows is, especially old games.
