I happily migrated to Linux > 15 years ago, was always using NVidia cards. Gaming was shit until Steam was ported to run natively and Proton came some time after. I now have a library of about 400 titles and I know of less than 10 of them that absolutely refuse to run under Proton.

I can't understand all of this simping for WIndows 10 over Win8. Windows 8 is an abomination Eraserhead baby for certain but Windows 10 is so much worse to the point where it almost unusable. And it runs so slow. I've uninstalled all of the bloatware and gone into the services menu to disable all of telemetry shit and it will still take like 20 seconds to run a program. On a fresh install. And the Task Manager is completely useless.

I still have a Win8 machine as my main that I never upgraded to 8.1, its infinitely more useable.

Win10 has gotten to the point where it's essentially unusable without a SSD thanks to random services deciding to use up your entire HDD.

No thanks, I currently run Manjaro on my Pi, it may not be pure Arch but fuck man I actually have more control over what goes in or out versus the official build upgrades that are competently sorted out per-desktop environment. Plus, compared to the windows experience on a burner, this thing flies.

Mark my words this new os will break more programs and games like 8 and 10 did. Few old games and utilities are already acting funny already in those windows versions.

Also I thought Win 10 is gonna be tje last OS. I've read that somewhere before. Are they going to give the new os for free to Win 10 and 8 users like they did when they newly released 10?

I switched to Mac years ago despite the cost of them in my country, they’re best of both worlds save for games, but games don’t matter.

Anyway I’m excited to see them officially release windows as a service, it seems like that’s the final step.

WinMe replaced Windows 98 and was built on Windows 95 kernel.
Win2k replaced NT4 and was built on NT kernel.

XP is NT5.1. Unofficial service packs were made to enable Win2k support for 32-bit XP software.

Tha's great and all but there are many big boy programs that won't mesh well with Linux.

I think the current stack of native Linux applications for doing creative work is quite solid for hobby or even commercial. Probably not corporate, but independent for sure. I think Oats Studios uses Linux in their creative workflow. Of the top of my head some of the stuff I use and have seen professionals use are:

Blender: 2D and 3D animation, sculpting, video editing
Inkscape: vector art
Unity: game creation
Gimp: basic image editing
LMMS: music creation
Lightworks: commercial grade video editor
DaVinci Resolve: commercial grade video editor

I mentioned this in the Internet Explorer thread, but basically it's not the fault of Linux, but more the fault of corporations not keeping up with the times and staying in their little 90's/2000's bubble of how things are done. Licensing fees for name-brand software is dumb. Relying on old browsers with security flaws is dumb.

What's the two biggest programs majority of corporate companies use? Adobe and Microsoft Office. In the Linux world you have a choice between Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice, both of which can also export PDF's to edit them. If you're looking for a basic PDF viewer, theres tons to choose from: Evince, Okular, and MuPDF just to name a few.

As for "creativity", there's plenty of creative programs that range from image editors and creators to music studios and video editing that gives you the same amount of tools and freedom (if not more) as the "professional" programs do.

This. Corporate work that involves "being able to seamlessly load that .docx that your boss sent you" or "being able to flash a powerpoint presentation up at a meeting and not have any issues with embedded videos/weird aspect ratios" seems like it should be a low bar, but Linux (or more specifically, OpenOffice/LibreOffice/Evince/Okular/etc) just doesn't clear it. (And it's not even really Linux's fault: the corporate world just runs on Windows, and always will.)

Compatibility is king in the corporate world. You use the same software that your boss and coworkers use, no exceptions. Which means you're using Windows, Microsoft Office, Adobe shit, and so on. Normal people (read: non-speds) have a lot more patience for "Ah fuck, Microsoft Powerpoint's glitching out again, gimme a second to reload this guys" than they do for the exact same issues in some other 'compatible' software that most of them have never heard of.
