Found a new local spot to watch fights. The only downside is that it’s full of a bunch of college aged BJJ (probably blue belts at best) LARPers who constantly mimic what they’re watching on the television. They seriously grab each other every time any hold is applied to someone on screen. They said it wasn’t a gay bar…. But I get different vibes. Whatever. They have a two drink minimum on numbered events, and the wings are pretty good. Still gay.
Prelims for tonight’s event are kind of odd. I only knew a few if these fighters off-hand, and felt like a casual fan. Weird to see Oban Elliot on the prelims, even if it is the featured bout.
The main card is a wrestlefuckers wet dream. Not much to say about the first three fights. If there isn’t any egregious wrestlefuckery that goes on for all three bouts, I’d be surprised.
Hoping Blaydes scores the KO against Kuniev. I don’t really have a horse in this race, but I really do think the first three fights have the potential to be absolute snooze fests (like the Wetzell v Gutierrez fight on PFL last night). Control against cage. Do just enough work to not get sic’d off the other guy. Then again, Curtis may just pancake this dude for a couple of rounds… let’s hope not.
I love Fiziev. Awesome fighter with an awesome style. Just a pleasure to watch. That being said, he allows himself to telegraph his shit so much. Ignacio is a hard counter for someone like him. He put Jalin Turner in a sick triangle choke back in March. If Fiziev can land those body kicks early on and frequently, I think he will pull off the decision.
Some of the most fun I’ve had watching any MMA bout was when we were chimping out during the Jiri and Hill fight earlier this year. I could very well be wrong, but I think this fight is actually razor close. I think the name of the game here is resiliency. Rountree got absolutely battered Alex and was still standing before he was shown mercy and the fight was called. Comparatively, Hill got dropped on his ass clean by Alex, and just kind of faded in the third round against a sloppy Jiri, allowing him to get pounded out. I think Khalil is more durable than Hill, but I’m not sure if he’s more powerful. I’ll be aping out against Hill, hoping for a second round KO from Rountree, but it’s likely going to go all 5.
