Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I'm assuming a mix of laziness and optimization of workflow pushed by companies.
So in other words, coding was done manually in the past, and that was used to build up more complex stuff, and then that more complex stuff is copy-pasted or combined to make Current Year "apps"? If so, that could explain that "watered down smartphone feel" they got.

To call it a "mess" would be a compliment.
The HTML of this page does not look too complex. Of course KF isn't exactly a typical "corporate slop" site of the Current Year 'net.

Speaking of, I noticed that "smartphone" OSes can be so ridiculously bloated and take up so much space on the internal drive. So much so that if one has a "smartphone" with 16 GB of memory, the "smartphone" OS can still take up almost all of that drive space. Leaving very little left for pics and especially vids (and no standard definition option either). Why are "apps" and websites so bloated now?
If it's Android we're talking about, it could be non-split APKs. Universal APKs have support for 3+ architectures stuffed inside them. Compare the Youtube app using APKMirror archives. 5.3.23 circa 2013 (7.3 MB, no API hell, no multiarch), 11.49.55 circa 2017 (23.9 MB, getting worse, architectures are split at least), 15.34.36 circa 2020 (80.3 MB, multiarch APK), 17.20.37 circa 2022 (117.7 MB, multiarch APK, time to Get A Better Phone™️). There's also this Stackoverflow question where the dev is pulling in tons of native libraries that bloat the resulting size. Multiply by architecture if they're stupid and don't want to split the APK. Witness the horror:

Now imagine what in-house dogshit Xiaomi or Samsung are putting inside of their system apps.

I think I will deploy my own instance soon though
Wasn't that hard. What finally pushed me over the edge was googling some images from my favourite childhood videogame - jazz jackrabbit - and having AI shoved into my face. Having my own instance is faster and I obviously have way more control - if you have a server I 100% recommend it. I even found [this](https://github.com/laylavish/uBlockOrigin-HUGE-AI-Blocklist) helpful blacklist to block a lot of the AI sites and immediately converted it to the correct format (I'll still have to tweak it, but tomorrow, it is 6am here already) and used it. I've been playing around with browsing for ~1 hour and it feels so refreshing. You can even replace some sites with other ones in search results (for example, if the engines return a youtube link, you can choose to receive it as a piped.video link) and place lower/higher priority on sites (give really low priority to fandom so it does not overtake non-cancer wikis). While configuring it I also found that you can even add file systems or databases as search engines, so if you had this innaccesible from the internet it could be great for searching on your NAS or whatever. Only downside so far is that it runs on python.

The list apparently has some issues to consider, according to this post:
HUGE (only about 1600 entries) blocklist. Read through the list, the issues I've found:
  • Mostly revolves around websites hosting AI imagery, not SEO blog trash
  • SEO spam gets a fraction of the list (one small group, ~20 in total)
  • There are separate categories for individual works of art blocked by the repo owner
  • Some weird /r/FuckLuigiMangione subreddit mod is on the list for some reason?
  • Shadiversity's YT channel link is also present, presumably because of the owner's seethe about his takes on AI art
Untrustworthy, even if it was a relevant list.

When going to a "modern" website, and it has that same shitty design Apple has where scrolling down the page doesn't actually scroll down, but just plays some animation that takes a lot of scrolling to get through, I immediately don't want whatever it is they're selling.

Also, the amount of soulless AI art I see in search results when trying to get artwork for specific cases is depressing.

The HTML of this page does not look too complex. Of course KF isn't exactly a typical "corporate slop" site of the Current Year 'net.
I welcome the KF experience in full, including the random 502 Bad Gateway errors, if it means it never changes to one of these newer layouts that make me want to rip my hair out.

What compels people to be such ban happy assholes? It seems like websites with reasonable moderation that wont censor you 6 ways from sunday just for showing up outside of going to the extreme of fedposting is the exception these days and not the norm. moderator abuse has also been rampant for some time now.

The reason search is such utter crap now is because we the users aren't using it right anymore. We enter our search terms expecting to find what we want, but that's not what they're about. The more time we spend tweaking our terms in the hopes of getting relevant answers is time they get to spend building their profiles that get sold to advertisers. That, and showing us what their advertisers want us to see.

I miss the original Yahoo, with it's straightforward directory.

It's craptastic human nature to want power over others?
maybe for some extremely vocal niggercattle, but there are words like "revolution" and "tyranny" for describing their bullshit and how to end it once and for all and different cultures and countries throughout human history and the history of the internet for good reason.

I haven't performed a file search on Windows in years. If I wanted to sit there watching a progress bar not move for an hour I never would have upgraded from dialup.
Hilariously, the best Windows file search tool is still cmd. Not Powershell, this command won't even work in Powershell. Only cmd.

cd \
dir / s /a *part_of_filename*

Remove the space between / and s. There's some kind of word filter on KF. Uses standard wildcards, etc, so you can do whatever you want with it.

I think a much more healthier way of thinking about this is the fact that humans are naturally tribalistic, and are going form communities that self select for particular personality traits and behaviors. You should not necessarily assume moderation is the problem. You should treat it as a learning experience to find your own niche. There are just people who can't handle free speech, and you can't do much to change that. This also applies to situations, in life, outside of the internet too.

Rate me MATI, but I've completely had it with Google and their fucking bullshit. I was already pissed when they replaced the reverse image search with Google Lens, but eventually I got used to it. Now these fucking poojeet street shitting faggots have BROKEN that! It used to work fine enough for finding matching images and you could specify what size you wanted. Now? It adds the fucking image to the SEARCH BAR and presents random matching thumbnails in an endless scrolling layout! Oh yeah, and you can't search by size anymore either! I know Google does this shit on purpose because they cum themselves when users get frustrated by the bullshit they intentionally add, but this is fucking absurd.

The only advantage Google had over TinEye (IMO) was more results because of their Orwellian surveillance network and less dead links. I've been putting up with this bullshit from them for years, continually finding workarounds for the bullshit they do to break their own fucking search engine and fucking YOUTUBE, but at some point it becomes a losing battle. Fuck Google

Editing this since I just remembered I was using an addon to redirect Lens to standard image search and Google probably changed something so that it broke. My point still stands though, it's unnecessarily convoluted bullshit when everything worked better before and they do it just to fuck with people.

Why does one have to get verified with "Cloudflare", and wait nearly 15 minutes to get a captcha -- which is ridiculously hard to solve -- just to make a post on 4chan now?

I noticed the changes too. Google image search used to work with a layout more like Yandex, now it does the vertical split screen BS.

User interface of Google images search went a lot suckier.

Used to be the image on the left, text or translation options at the bottom, and results on the right -- sorta like how Yandex image search works now. But now, Google image search results got (more) "smartphone"-ish, with the image cramped into the top, the options in the middle, and results on the bottom. And changing options now has animated effects! Also, when scrolling through related or matching images, the reference image vanishes, replaced with endless scrolling through related and matching pics. It sucks.

Do Google user interfaces ever improve, or only get worse?
