Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Too young to remember when devs went out of their way to break shit if you weren't using internet explorer?
Nah, I've been using the 'nets since the late '90s. Sites only running on Internet Exploder must've been far rarer. I never used a site not fully working on other browsers.*

* Except for a site I wrote which I made using Micro$oft Word and then fixed by re-writing it in Notepad. The Word version injected all this extra code to do the same thing.

Here's a real tech tip

If you use an extension to change your user agent to some random text, Google will display a minimal cut down version without their dog shit AI features that loads in like 0.2ms

You can also append &udm=14 to any Google search URL, using a redirection extension like Redirector, and avoid the A.I. garbage.

You should be using a different search engine anyway.

Interesting that it uses the 2010 design for the search page but the mobile design for the search results page. Now when can they go back to the whole Kennedy design for all their shit?

was the old 'net chuddy or leftist?
It had a bit of both. Back then the left was slightly more chuddy, and the chuds were slightly more leftist.
Overall the internets were more centrist. Clown World has polarized politics.

There's also these posts by anons in the archive that seem to sum it up well:

Nah, old web was more libertarian or even anarchist.
That's how I would describe it. Imagine what a room full of weird/autistic/antisocial/spazzy 14-35 year old white men would look like. It would be fairly anti-establishment, high freedom, high rationalism. That looks more libertarian, anarchist than anything else and that's how it was. It only looks "leftist" to some because they were critical of establishment powers like Bush and Christians. But there was literally no such thing as idpol on the early internet, in fact "no labels" was the meta. Some may also not realize how similar Democrats/Republicans were at the time so the distinction wasn't novel.
