If you are an MK lore sperg like I am, there's a chance you'd get a kick out of wandering around Shangy for Kahn's island and see all the stuff like the statues and the MK movie reference, and the arena from the first game, etc.
However, it quickly loses its appeal because it's relly just tedious with how fast travel works (or doesn't) or how grindy it is and how you need a special currency to see even more chests and chase Reptile around.
Or that kinda excessive "perform 25 fatalities on every character on the roster including guest characters to unlock this special place"
I've said it before in this thread but if they made some kind of spinoff featuring the Krypt, I'd be stoked.
I think it's better than the stupid bullshit retardo board game thing from MK1's invasion mode though.
If it helps, I agree. I'm not that old but I am of the increasingly old-school and unpopular opinion that unlockables should be unlocked by playing the gay you paid money to play.
But Esports don't have time for that so you better buy those ten season passes and log in every day for that special premium currency you need to unlock that recolor of an outfit, you otherwise could have gotten by beating the story on hard mode or whatever.
As far as MK lore is concerned... I stopped following the games after UMK3. I thought their move to polygons ruined a part of the game's charm and look. Not to mention, at least with MK4, the graphics looked like a low-rent knockoff of games that did that look better. Part of what enticed me to buy MK11 was the fact that the characters look like real people again, for the most part.
I was quite disappointed in reading how badly Neatherrealm has chosen to treat that canon. Hardcore fans, the ones you'd think, you'd want to keep in the fold, take that stuff very seriously. I thought the multiverse ending to MK11 was pretty dumb and played out.
It really nags at my mild OCD, that I'm likely never going to unlock those intros and victories, even though I'll soon skip them once I've seen them a few times.
To me, the Krypt is just not fun. I bust down a wall to get to another section...find a bunch of green glowy things that all say locked. Well, how the fuck am I supposed to unlock them? There probably should be some kind of hint or guidance there to let you know. Yes, I can watch a walkthrough, but I really shouldn't have to. Or I come upon a gate that is locked. It has the name of something that I'll need to unlock it (I think), but where the fuck am I gonna find it. I've already unlocked all the chests up to that point...or I missed something and now I've gotta go back over every square inch of the Krypt to find it? I just don't have the autistic dedication for that. It seems punishing. Or the "meat" puzzle with the skeleton, a desiccated Shou Khan, and one of the Cyborgs... Ok, I get the skeleton, I'm dead, no problem, But when I match the other 2, nothing seems to happen. No indicators that you've unlocked anything, nothing. I go back to the green glowy things, and they are still locked, so what the fuck did I accomplish, lol? I suspect NRS was going to sneak in some sort of microtransactions to buy most of that stuff, and might have gotten some pushback on it, so left everything as is.. overly complicated..
Despite my gripes about unlockables, and some woke shit that isn't really as bad as it's been made out (Jax's ending seems more like one of those dark endings that the first 3 used to have. All it was missing was a "Have a nice day.") I've been having loads of fun with the game. Hell, the whole impetus to getting a PS4, to begin with, was to play SF6, and I'm finding I'm having more fun with MK11 than SF6. never would have guessed, being a decades-long SF diehard.
