The best MK game is Armageddon

fight me
I've always wanted to play that one. I got Deadly Alliance and Deception, but for some reason I never got Armageddon. I don't know why. Maybe it was burnout from the way those games played or maybe it was because I didn't like the idea of the Kreate a Fatality feature, but now I want to track down a copy just so I can play it.

Kreate a Fatality was a compromise due to the challenges of creating a game with every single MK fighter in it. Eventually there had to be a limitation somewhere. They also limited every fighter in the game to just 2 styles for that same reason.

Armageddon had by far the best Konquest mode (Deadly Alliance's was just a series of linear tutorials and Deception's was a pseudo rpg where all of the missions were just tutorials on how to do some of the fighter combos). Wheras Armageddon was just an action game interspersed with MK fights as boss battles. Its protagonist also wasn't a naive moron like Shujinko in Deception. And because it had every single fighter you could go from fighting dudes like Cabal and Sektor to fighting Goro and Sonya. It was a really neat campaign where you kept looking forward to who the next fight would be since there was so much variety.

It also had the best minigame with Motor Kombat and it didn't have 5 different currencies to unlock stuff in the Krypt. Instead there was just one. You could also buy things you unlocked by beating Konquest in the Krypt. And you could spend currency on stuff to unlock in Kreate a Fighter. Which was also the best new addition to the series.
There was so much value to Armageddon as a product that none of the later MK games even scratched the surface of. I played this game for years solely because of things like Kreate a Fighter.

This is sorta how I feel about MK9; that game had so much content oozing out its pores that X and 11 feel really barren by comparison. I just didn't feel as compelled to see everything in either of those games. That said, I loved how dense the content was in DA and Deception, so Armageddon might scratch that itch. And Kreate a Fighter looks awesome; I've seen people create characters like the AVGN and Shaggy. I wish they brought it back because that's always a really cool feature in any fighting game.

I seriously thought MK9 introduced that. As much as I enjoyed DA and Deception, that was always the most bullshit part about the Krypt. Granted, Deception had a few ways to farm the rarer koins, but it was still extremely stupid.

Honestly you've convinced me to give the game a shot. I love the PS2 era of MK and I want to see how it ends. Plus it's one of the more important games plotwise since it is what kickstarted the modern era of MK.

MK 11 is pretty fucking awesome

what isn't awesome is having a daily rotation of skins/intro unlocks on the store rather than just allowing players to pick the ones they want
It really is a shame because mechanically, the game is solid. The fatal blows are total bullshit this time around since anyone can acquire them without having to work for them unlike X-rays, but outside of that this is a really solid fighting game (at least to my admittedly limited knowledge). It really feels like an evolution of the systems that were introduced back in 9.

The fuckery with the Krypt though and all the grinding and shit really put a damper on it though. I'd honestly play the game more if it wasn't so bad, because the game is fun. I just don't like all the shit you have to go through to unlock fatalities and skins when the previous games were a lot simpler.

I actually don't mind the grind for unlocks in the game so much, I think there is value and enjoyment in getting those rewards as you do challenges, even if I sincerely hate some of the towers that are generated. The Krypt is fine to me, though resetting seems pretty random if you only do a certain number of chests.

My main issue is with the time krystals and how impractical they can be. It isn't too much trouble to get enough for a couple skins and some intro unlocks, yet if you actually want to use them for the things you want you end up having to hold krystals as you wait for the store to generate the things you want to unlock. Having the option to spend them on whatever would help to shorten the grind. I also think it's pretty shitty to give players the option to buy krystals but then also force them to follow the same daily generated store unlocks. If anything this would be the perfect time to let them get anything they wanted, sort of a vip store for helping to fund the studio

BillyD is probably crying into his waifu pillow rn.

The problem with that MK gen was how utterly jank the fighting felt like, it somehow felt both too stiff and too uncontrollable at the same time. The side content was consistently great, and the focus on plot and aesthetics was also good (even if said stories weren't great, the presentation was consistently top-notch).

What wasn't great at all was the characters, the majority of characters introduced in the PS2 games were completely awful (Nitara, Hsu Hao..etc), the only good character we got out of that era was probably Kenshi. Not to mention the awful redesigns and directions some characters got (Sub-Zero got some of his worst designs in that era)

When you look at it, MK9 really, really rescued the franchise in so many ways.

The grind is kinda annoying, especially when shit is behind stuff I really don't care for, like AI battle. But the the gameplay is just outstanding, almost every online game feels fun.

(yeah i can't really argue against that, hiding specific skins and unlocks behind certain game modes is pretty annoying, like getting people to play AI battle. The only time I do any AI stuff is when I'm too tired to actually play the game)

also im probably the only person on the face of the earthrealm who likes sub zero's deception designs.

You ain't alone there. I thought he looked badass in Deception. The alternate costume is a bit much, but I always thought his base costume looked intimidating, and helped him move away from the repetitive ninja designs that have plagued MK.

The Shredder helmet wasn't a bad idea (I love Shredder), but the concept was marred by the fur patches and huge shoulder plates.

Max Dood did an entertaining look at past MK costumes, a lot of those we're honestly awful.

See, I disliked 4 so I kind of skipped all the way to 9. Any mk games in that timeframe you guys would recommend?
I personally liked Deadly Alliance and Deception when I first played them, but they are somewhat clunky compared to 9. They have really good ideas; each character utilizes two real life martial arts (1 in Armageddon) and a weapon. You can switch between these styles on the fly to open up your combo game and mix up your play style. The game also takes place on a Soul Calibur-esque 3D plane, so characters can move a bit more freely. It is somewhat restrictive so Soul Calibur (or so I've heard, never actually played Soul Calibur).

There is a bit of trade-off between the games though. Deadly Alliance's roster is mostly made up of classic characters while Deception's consists of forgettable new ones, so DA has the better roster. However, DA's fatalities are dreadful and are some of the worst in the series while Deception's are far more creative (it's also the only game to have hara-kiris, which is a neat idea and one I'd like to see return).

Also DA's arcade mode is ridiculously cheap; I've only ever beaten it once. Deception's is tricky at first but much more manageable. Deception is definitely the better game in my opinion since it feels better to play, but DA is no slouch either.

No.

The 3D MK era was balls because it tried too hard to be cool and serious, but everything was so awkward and goofy that it ended up being a joke. The new characters (except for Quan Chi and Kenshi) were either way too generic (eg. Dairou) or had horribly shit designs (eg. Drahmin). The story modes were poorly written and it was clear Ed Boon had no idea where he wanted to go with it. Armageddon was the biggest embarrassment, because they fucked up all the designs/personalities of returning characters, and the devs were too retarded to figure out how to animate more than 2 legs, so we ended up with the legendarily retarded two-legged Motaro.

I was prepared for MK9 to be a garbage game, but luckily Netherealm Studios know what the fuck they're doing and single-handedly saved the series. They even went one step further with the story of MK11 and basically decided that all those retarded timelines from the 3D era were the result of an evil time queen and are now erased.

So that's where Ermac, Rain, and Smoke went...

So the leak was true.

Wasn't the other guests a Terminator and Ash Williams?
They were... although Bruce Campbell has recently come out and said he wasn't in it. So, either he's bullshitting us, or they got the likeness of Ash Williams but Bruce isn't voicing him... which would make absolutely no fucking sense.

Not gonna lie, that Shang Tsung is pretty godlike! They way they've given him color palette ninja special moves is pretty neat too, and I'm really looking forward to Spawn. Here's hoping he'll have some bitchen cape and chain animation, and that his interactions with Jax and Jacqui won't be too... woke.
