Most A-logged Characters In Fiction. - A surprisingly prevalent phenomenon.

Isn’t that the pedo dude who nearly got one of Ann’s classmates to commit suicide and fucked Ryuji out of the track team? It’s been a hot minute since I’ve dealt with P5 lore
Yeah though to be fair even hateable asshole characters get a-logged, probably the most because they are such an easy target for tards to be like "I will be more of a gentleman than this douchebag, and treat the people he hurt with much more dignity" especially when it's clear these types see themselves as a gallant knight in shining armor to save their waifu from their punching bag of their choice.

Speaking of which I think one of the more A-Logged characters is Shinji from Fate/Stay Night who while he is a very despicable piece of shit who has done irredeemable actions, the amount of A-Logs this character generates is amazing. First the way they talk about him is like he is this complete Gary Stu who gets away with everything despite the fact he is humiliated and killed brutally every route whereas in the one route he actually survives ends up with him still getting humiliated, beaten up, and was traumatized to the point he stopped being a dick after he became an abomination.

His A-Logs also write very edgy punishments that are often too disproportionate or tone-deaf such as being raped to death by a group of muscular men or raped by other means (yes they write rape punishments a lot, idk why) and being killed as though they committed every sort of evil in the world despite the character as much of a actual threat as Chris Chan. The cherry on top is that most of these people try to act like they are a brave hero to save his sister he abuses and act like she is the most hated character ever and then talking about how evil Shinji is and why he should be hated despite the fact his sister is a very popular character while Shinji is one of the most hated anime characters out there. It doesn't help that these A-Logs write elaborate posts on how they'd treat his sister better and it's often described in a mostly romantic context. The saddest thing is that the A-Logs scream at anyone who likes the character whether it's for ironic enjoyment or how he was written as though simply liking a character means you support the actions they take.

tl;dr A-Logs take their hate for a deservedly hateable character too far by acting like they are expressing a unpopular opinion, ignoring the fact the character got punished in a proportionate way, expressing this hate thinking it will get approval from their fictional waifu, and screaming at anyone who has a single positive opinion as though they are a hateable person that approves of the character's actions.

It's definitely a "protect my waifu" thing with Shinji. I think the intensity of hate is built heavily on the "lost purity" angle in Heaven's Feel. They see him as destroying their favorite girl's purity, and also as a consequence making her life tremendously unpleasant (kinda an understatement, but I don't really wanna go too deep into the story here).

That said, the FSN fandom has always been prone to excessively emotional attachment to the characters, even by weeb fandom standards, so I suppose it isn't too surprising there are some that get a little too into their Shinji hate.

Pretty much it's that since the rape thing is the only thing that's talked about and it's only that he raped her, not that as a consequence she lost the only likeable family member she had left due to her existence being a walking reminder he is ruined due to being inferior, but she had no one else to turn to at all which made her depressed and want to kill herself. Arguably the consequences of what that caused were much worse than the rape but the A-Logs only talk about the rape as though him not raping her would make her life better.

Ironically, the Japanese side of the fandom is more open to Shinji than the western side which is primarily where most of these A-Logs come from because of the whole "protecting my waifu" thing

Oh yeah Tucker is A-Logged hard and like it's understandable why but sometimes the hate gets old and to a non-fan would make one think that he had been the main villain or something. It doesn't help even important people are banking in on his infamy by making him a major villain in the live action FMA because it would be cheap investment in making an effective antagonist plus he's "popular"..

One I'm surprised I hadn't seen mentioned, probably because he and the seasons he was in are largely forgotten, is Randy from That 70s Show. This one is very much deserved as Randy seemed to be designed as a fuck you to Topher Grace for leaving the show. He was basically a better looking and cooler Eric which was none too subtlely pointed out by the other characters. The network eventually got the message as he only got appears in the first couple of minutes of the finale (where Eric returns) and has one line of dialogue before promptly disappearing without explanation.

Asuka Langley Sohryu, while she definitely has her fans, also has some a-logs who think she's just the massive bitch while missing the point that she's a traumatized child that completely lacks healthy coping mechanisms and lashes out others because that's what traumatized kids often do.

I think with the Eva kids, and kid characters in general, people often judge them with the same standards as adults when that's not really fair. Kids brains are still developing and they can't deal with shit the way adults can.

Related, Amuro Ray is in some ways sort of an ancestor for Shinji Ikari and gets some hate as a result. He's a 15 year old kid forced to become a child soldier after he tries to save his colony, it makes perfect sense that he wouldn't exactly be happy about always having to pilot a super weapon and kill people.

In the Gundam fandom sometimes it seems like the fanboys hate any character that isn't a cool ace that enthusiastically gets in their awesome custom suit to kill people ala Char. Hell, even with the villains the ones who aren't cool ace pilots get way more hate than the ones who are even if their actions aren't actually worse (shit, Char himself is a backstabbing douchebag and has been since day 1, him being a conniving, murderous extremist is a huge part of his character and what makes him interesting).

Also I'm going to bring up Rey again because even on this site you have people acting like she murdered their whole family, poisoned their well, put their baby in a blender, and raped their dog, particularly in the SW griefing thread. Like shit, I think TROS kind of dropped the ball with her (like it did with everyone) and can get not liking her, but the intensity of the hate she gets is pretty ridiculous especially since I don't think she's any worse than Luke or Anakin.

Last thing I want to reiterate, and I've mentioned it before, is any fandom that has lots of nutty shippers is going to be a-logging the fuck out of characters that get in the way of their favorite ship, especially female characters that get in the way of m/m ships. I hear it got so bad with Supernatural that any time they'd try to introduce a female character that got near the boys the fans would bombard the writers and actress with harassment and threats to the point they'd have no choice but to kill the character off to try and appease them. Since Supernatural recently ended and there's lots of whining about how horrible and evil and homophobic the show staff are, I think it's important to talk about the atrocious behavior of the fandom since lots of people seem to be overlooking it.

Shinji Ikari is something of a sad sack, but I hate people whose opinion of him can be summed up as "Get in the robot, Shinji! Why doesn't he just get in the fucking robot?" Apparently, they've forgotten all of the times that Shinji did get in the robot, only to have aliens shoot a beam at him, badly injure him, or even eat him whole. And Shinji feels everything the robot feels, so he's enduring levels of torture that would break the minds of most full grown men. Shinki Ikari can be criticized for a lot of things, but I can totally understand his lack of desire to "get in the fucking robot."
Over the years, I've people's being getting called out for it since they also forget that shinji's not a power fantasy.

Honestly, the thing with Shinji isn't even really his personality. He's not actually THAT different from your typical wimpy protagonist, the difference is that most wimpy anime protagonists have a strong role model they look up to, or a close friend they care deeply for, who's able to motivate them . Misato at least tries to be this for him, but she ultimately fails because she's got her own host of issues to work through and is ill-equipped to play mother for two deeply disturbed teenagers.

Like really, Shinji isn't any wimpier than, say, Simon at the beginning of Gurren Lagann. He was just failed by everyone around him (or more accurately, they all failed each other - emotional support is a two-way street) and was thus unable to grow past it. Kaji is the only character who exhibits any sort of positive emotional influence on him, even motivating Shinji to get back in the robot by telling him he should do what he wants to do rather than what is expected of him, and the show might've turned out very different if it were him and not Misato who "adopted" Shinji when he arrived in Tokyo-3.

Shinji is a believable and deeply flawed character, just like all the Eva characters are. I think with Eva people either hate or favor the character that's most similar to them. Shows like Utena or Bojack Horseman are similar (and like Eva those shows also center on characters who are all deeply flawed at best).

Speaking of Utena, from what I remember Shiori gets a shitton of a-logging. She's certainly far from a saint, but in the end of the day she's a depressed, mentally ill who lacks healthy coping mechanisms and lashes out as a result. I know Juri fans have a particular hatred of her and while that makes sense, Shiori at least gives Juri depth and complexity that she lacks in the manga. Plus she's nowhere near as evil as Akio or Anthy (though they're also complex, compelling characters).

Speaking of dark, deconstructive animus, I know in Madoka Magica Madoka and Hitomi both get hate. Madoka gets hated for not making a contract prior to episode 10 even though from the start there's all kinds of shit telling her making a contract with Kyubey is a bad fucking idea (from Homura straight up telling her to her friends suffering and dying horribly). Hitomi gets painted as an evil man-stealing bitch especially by hardcore Sayaka fans even though Hitomi straight up told Sayaka she planned to ask what's his face out before she did and gave Sayaka a chance to do so first (which Sayaka refused). I can get not being the biggest fan of her, but she actually went above and beyond to respect Sayaka's feelings and give her a fair shot with the boy before she made her move.

Kyubey gets lots of hate too, but like with Griffith he's intentionally written as a love-to-hate character and a despicable (though interesting) villain.

This guy:

For those not in the know, he's a character from a pretty rad anime about ridiculous gambling. In that arc, it's about a cruise ship with a casino with a really weird rock-paper-scissor gambling thing and anyone who loses too much is forced to work a couple years in an illegal mining operation that's sure to fuck you up beyond repair - if you even survive.

The main character, Kaiji, manages to come up with a scheme to pull through and uses a group of other losers to pull it off, however he is ultimately betrayed by Andô (the guy pictured above) and very narrowly avoids getting send to the mine. It's a real gut-punch when Andô manipulates the others into betraying Kaiji... it's not even about them avoiding going to the mines themselves at that point, they sell Kaiji off for a few bucks.

Okay lol what the fuck? Anyone who watched Madoka and shit on her for not making a contract earlier CLEARLY missed the entire point of the show. I think about halfway through it becomes pretty obvious that she's not going to make a contract until the climax.

I didn't really like Hitomi that much (actually forgot her name, I only know her as "girls can't love girls") because she gets left behind by the plot pretty early on and gets brought back purely to serve as a plot device to further Sayaka's psychological deterioration. She feels like a character who probably had a bigger role in earlier drafts of the script, but got her appearances pared down to just the plot-relevant parts because it was ultimately more important to develop the other characters.

Homura also definitely gets hate for her characterization in the third movie, which I'm honestly not the biggest fan of either.

It amazes me how much people (Tumblr) Hate Minoru Mineta for the simple fact that he's a pervert as if they've never watched another anime before. It may be likely that this is their first anime because Mineta in some ways reminds me of Ataru Moroboshi in some ways. I imagine Tumblr would have a shitfit if they ever watched Urusei Yatsura.
Tbf, the most common criticism is that mineta being a pervert is his only character trait. It's not just tumblr that hates him, it's the anime community as a whole.

Anyway another character i can think of is the nameless ddlc protagonist. It doesn't happen anymore but i remember the time people used ro a-log him because he didn't worship sayori and didn't treat her like she was made of glass because she's depressed despite the fact she hid it from him for nearly 20 years.

There's a 13 chapter fanfiction dedicated to torturing the character.

so far, Kobeni from Chainsaw Man fits the bill i still like her tho

To be fair, that dude is a fucking mess. That whole series would be pretty bizarre if it wasn't too fucking long.
Isn't it bizarre enough especially how the relationship got exposed and his family doesn't give a shit he and chizuru lied about it for 2 years straight?

It is bizarre but not enough to recommend wasting your time reading over 100 chapters of it. Just enough to read the summaries and question what the fuck the author is thinking.

Any character from JRPGs for being "weak", having weird designs, off-the-wall characterizations, or for having strange if not outright senseless mechanics. Off the top of my head come:

  • Edward from Final Fantasy IV - Really, pretty much all music-based JRPG characters are met with virulent rage by fans, with the Spoony Bard being the quintessential example.
  • Umaro and Gau from Final Fantasy VI - The former is in permanent berserk mode, the latter has that strange mechanic where he leaves the party in a specific area of the map to learn monsters' abilities, most of which don't do diddly squat.
  • Almost everyone from Final Fantasy VIII for too many reasons, but especially Squall due to his emo tendencies, and Zell due to him being a dumb loud meathead.
  • Quina from Final Fantasy IX - Weird as fuck, undefined gender, that annoying frog-catching game, randomized damage, only has three or four useful Blue Magic spells, and comic relief moments aren't particularly funny or memorable.
  • Rafa and Malik from FF Tactics, for having weak ineffective powers, and their recruiting missions being crap. Some villains as well, like Argath (Talks and acts like an upper-class faggot despite being impoverished, eventually betrays your group), Wiegraf (He becomes Belial, 'nuff said) and Dycedarg (Your own brother with a personal power-grabbing agenda)
  • Marche, the main character of FF Tactics Advance, because he's actively trying to destroy the fantasy his friends are living in. Never mind there was a good reason for him to do it. Montblanc to a lesser extent.
  • Maria and Chu-Chu from Xenogears, because they're incredibly weak in normal fights and only show their potential in the Gear sections, and Hammer because he's kinda annoying and eventually betrays the team in a crucial part of the game out of insecurity.
  • So many characters from Suikoden that I really can't even remember them all. Usually because they're mostly one-dimensional and lose relevance after you recruit them.
  • Same thing with Chrono Cross - Too many characters, and most of them don't serve much purpose. I think the ones that get the most hate are Rideel (too weak for her plot relevance, and you're stuck with her during the fight against Dario, one of the hardest of the game), Korcha (he bitches and moans a lot, especially if you choose "not to save Kid"), Pierre (VERY weak until you get his specific equipment), Nikki (see Edward from FFIV above), Marcy (Possibly the hardest of the Devas, plus she talks like a valley girl), and Leene for "getting in the way" of the Serge/Kid dynamic for all of a few moments in the very beginning of the game, before they even meet.

There's also Alis, or whatever her name was - The helper chick from the latter Megaman X games, because she interrupts the gameplay so much to explain shit you could figure out on your own just fine, especially in X5. Some people outright hate X5 and one of the reasons they point out is due to Alis' interference.
