Most cost-effective gun for self-defense (2022 edition) - Pew-pew for me and you-you

Personally I carry a beat to shit Egyptian (I think) surplus CZ75 I bought for $350 a few years ago.

Turk M1911s are only $350 brand new if you want a full size .45

I have a Glock 17 personally, but really as long as you can get a concealed permit you're off to a good start. I wouldn't really recommend something like an AR-15 even if I own one for fun, just grab a handgun and something like a shotgun to start off as a basic package. Once you have that you can pick up other guns, but those are more for fun.

If you are worried about neighbors use hollow points.
If you're in the US have hollow points for self defense and full metal jacket for range shooting. The reason is that no matter what you use, if you defend yourself you will have the wrong ammo, but there are a few advantages to hollow points in the legal system, the first being that it's what law enforcement uses so if it's good enough for them then it should be good enough for you, they are designed to kill and there's no such thing as a "warning shot" which means you have more protection legally as you were intending to stop a threat, and finally they have less penetration so you can argue you weren't a particular threat bystanders in that regard.

The justice system will still try their best to fuck you, but at least those arguments are an option if needed.

If youre worried about neighbors use an AR-15. Over penetration and its dangers are less of a concern for a 5.56mm rifle than it is a pistol or shotgun.
If you hit anyone besides the attacker, you will go to jail for negligent discharge. Be careful.
IANAL but thats not how it works.

"There is not a firearm cartridge that will stop an impending, unavoidable threat of death or great bodily harm that will not also penetrate multiple layers of standard building materials. This is the reality in which we have to operate. Sure … it’s important that you take over-penetration into account in the context of home defense. But there’s no reason to abandon your preferred sidearm or shotgun just because it goes through drywall."

That's a quote from an article I read a while back that sums it up pretty well, I think.

There have been various attempts made to "solve" the problem. Glaser rounds, the cringeworthy RIP rounds, etc. Basically, all variations of frangible ammunition. And none of them catch on. Partly it's a reliability issue... Guns notoriously don't like Glaser rounds, for example. Partly it's because they had issues with too much clothing. And partly it's because nobody wants to have to defend using a RIP round in court.

I just use Hornady Critical Defense and replace them every couple years.

Helps to live in a state with a strong castle doctrine / stand your ground law.

This makes zero sense.

"stand your ground" laws simply mean you have no duty to retreat. That's it.

Anyone in here that carries or is thinking of carrying, I suggest listening to Law of Self Defense podcast. Half the shit said in this thread is retarded.

Not quite. Depends on how the law is worded, but properly written they provide a rebuttable presumption that you were justified. Basically it shifts the burden of proof on them to prove you did wrong, not on you to prove you did right. Which is really how our legal system should work by default anyways, but sadly it isn't.

Which, granted, is basically a criminal law thing. Civil law is a whole different mess.

tldr;

You miss with 5.56mm, as it goes through walls it quickly starts to tumble(reducing its ability to further penetrate barriers) and loses the required velocity to fragment(which is what makes it highly effective) so youre basically poking 5.56mm holes into someone assuming you hit someone.

You miss with 9mm, it goes through a wall and its still a 9mm projectile that will poke a 9mm hole in someone.

It helps, but from what I remember Kyle Rittenhoue was in a stand your ground state, tried to flee despite not being required to, and only shot as a last resort, all of which was on video, and that trial was still a nightmare.

Wisconsin has castle doctrine but not stand your ground. Besides, that was hardly a typical case. They were out for blood for political reasons.

Double checked it, and you are correct, but Wisconsin does not have a duty to retreat either. These cases are always political and the people involved are scum that will have no issue sacrificing you for their own career advancement.

Binger should have been disbarred for that bullshit.

Me personally I own two guns at the moment: a dual-stack M1911 in .45 ACP (which I conceal carry everyday) and a milled AKM in 7.62x39mm

If you want something dirt-cheap do what my Grandfather did in the Russian Civil War: Get a Mosin Nagant and a saw and turn it into an Obrez. You'll probably have to get the tax stamp for SBR with the ATF nowadays though

Fucking hell, are you 6'6"? How the hell do you hide that?
I actually am 6' 4" - but there is also a very neat "life hack" I found:

Specifically, those Duluth Trading Co. "Longtail" T-Shirts and Dress-Shirts that are made to hide "plumber butt" are excellent at heling you conceal firearms. When I'm not in uniform for work that's what I usually wear

The best weapon for home defense is likely always going to be a shotgun. Just choose one. Aim vaguely at whatevers threatening you and fill it with buckshot. It's either going to be dead or severely maimed and shotguns don't break the bank.
It's gotta be a double barreled and you have to shoot both barrels out the window to scare off the burglar.
