If all goes well, a bit later this year I'll have enough space around the house to begin cultivating some tasty mushrooms, which is something I wanted to do for a while now.
While I wait, I'd love to hear from anyone who's had any experience or is also interested in beginning themselves. All who seek knowledge or want to share it are welcome!
Right now I'm planning on growing oysters in straw bags like pic related:

I already have family members who have experience with mycology and are willing to help me out, but that doesn't mean I don't want to hear what you guys have to share! :)
I also look forward to documenting my journey on here as soon as I start.
And if the thread gets popular enough, I'll probably update the op with some guides and other resources we've gathered.

Happy growing farmers! 🍄

This year I was able to forage some super morels.

I've never seen them grow this big before on my property, it was a surreal experience finding mushroom after mushroom like this.
I am also wanting to get into growing various mushrooms, I do have a dank cellar-basement that could be a great start for some beginner food mushrooms.
I'm curious what brands of starter boxes would be worth looking into, and various preserving methods to keep them long term.

I regret not making some soups out of these morels and canning/freezing them.

Aw man, you're making my mouth water with those! I always wanted to try morels.
I envy you so much for having both a forageable property and a dank basement. You live in a mushroom enjoyers paradise it seems.
A dank basement sounds perfect for some nice button mushrooms. Good luck.

Living in a swamp has some benefits.

Looking into Chicken of the Woods (a favorite mushroom of my grandfather) and I found two things,

Next up was this great guide about cultivating not just chicken of the woods, but various other mushrooms using logs and a pressure cooker. I will look into this some more and report my efforts, alongside some dank basement shrooms.

Huh, I didn't know chicken of the woods is cultivable. Thanks!
I'll look into it since my best mate has expressed he wants to try it, and I'm also interested as well. Sadly, where I live, you need to travel for quite some time to get to any half-decent foraging spot, so I'm more inclined towards cultivation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to find hardwood logs or sawdust?

I’ve had a long of success with growing Lions Mane and oyster mushrooms indoors. The psychedelic kind as well although I don’t partake myself. More of a fun experiment. Both are fairly easy using plastic tubs and 5 gallon buckets.

I've seen Lions Mane going around a lot in dudebro workout circles (added to a lot of """"test boosters"""), but haven't looked into it myself.

Psychedelics I plan to stay away from, no matter what the meth head offers me for growing them, but I've heard growing them can be very rewarding. (also it's annoying whenever I mention growing mushrooms in IRL circles and normies just make dudeweed420 jokes)

I'd love to grow some oyster shrooms as they're my favorite and easy to grow, but I've also heard they need to be in a sterile location because they get moldy easily and my building is a damp mess with infiltration and mold issues. I don't think I'll ever be able to sterilize a room to grow oysters, maybe I'll try sticking them in the pantry, but I'm not too optimistic.

The landlord fears the humble apartment mushroom farmer.

Depends on where you live, I've always collected branches and tops from new clear cuts as they leave a lot of that behind. If you are more urban I'd try the pet store as one guy I know gets his shavings that way. Also for Kiwis looking to grow there is lots of videos on the pf tek technique on youtube which is pretty foolproof once you get it down pat.

I always used totes for this reason, easy to sterilize between uses and clear lids for light for fruiting once the cakes are done.

For real, every time I tell my mother about trying mushroom tea or something similar she always assumes I’m trying to get high. Like, Jesus Christ mother, there are other benefits to mushrooms than just that. (Though honestly I’m not against trying psychedelic mushrooms at least once)

hello, glad to see that there's a thread here. I've been growing culinary mushrooms since June and it's seriously the easiest thing ever. It's a shame that they're overlooked by many people.
Here are my current bags. They're blue oysters.

I got a bit lazy this time around- normally I put the hay through a food processor, it makes the bags much more dense.
this time I just said fuck it and went straight to the bag, which has made things much less dense. that's great for oxygen, but terrible when trying to make a cake.

when my oysters pin, I'll post em here!

I think I have a bunch of Chicken of the Woods in the forest behind me, but I'm too worried about mistaking them for something else.
Also, anyone have any luck with growing trumpet mushrooms at home?

They finally pinned! I cut a hole in the bag a week ago. 2 days ago this turned up in the bag:

What you're looking at is primordia, or the equivalent of an embryo for mushrooms. Out of this will come fresh oyster mushrooms!

yesterday, it's already looking 2x bigger, and has some protrusion out of the bag:

I used some electrical tape to band the bag, as other pins were forming, and they weren't going to make it. Yes, this means I forced the shrooms to have an abortion. And I didn't even have to brew any tea.

Finally (so far): today.
They've doubled in size, so it can't be long now. I'm excited to see how big they get!
