🍄Mushroom Cultivation🍄

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Cut open my block earlier today after leaving it to rest for 3 weeks after my block mix. Pretty sure everything looks good. Cut the bag from the top and now just have it taped folded over and taped on the side. Bought a mister and sprayed some fresh tap on all the sides of the bag+lightly over the block. Running a manual 12 off 12 on light cycle (literally my oven light lol)on my bag and misting every other day. First time for me ever growing anything, doing it with a Booming Acres all in one bag.

looking good! How is it looking now?

It came out pretty decent! The bags have been working really well for me :). I tried working with the dubtubs for a little bit, but I wasn't getting the same type of colonization I was getting with the bags.

I had quite a few fuck ups on the dub tubs, and I wasn't able to narrow down where my issues were arising from.

I recently made a bag of my own (millet+coir) The first bag I put my grain into is turning completely white. Full colonization incoming :)

I think I've mostly just been getting aborts with the dubtub and that's what I've been eating since I started so far.

Really love my shrooms, but it's been pretty hard getting started. Extremely important to follow each step of the growing process verbatim.

I would dare not eat a wild mushroom but I have them all over the lawn/property in the summer after rain. Ones that look like large button mushrooms (maybe Agaricus campestris?) and yellow ones that might be golden chanterelles or their poisonous cousin.

As a "retired" mycologist please don't buy premade monotubs. You can get micropore tape for cheap on Amazon (polyfill sucks) and tubs at Walmart for under $20. Shut off ventilation (AC or heat) and nuke the inoculation/spawn room with Lysol. Don't turn the AC or heat back on until you have resealed your tubs. I have three dogs and never once had contams back in the day.

I always nuked my space like that so I don't have an educated opinion about doing it any other way. We have three dogs so I was hoping to kill any contams they may have inadvertently brought into my project room. Age and hypertension prevent me from indulging anymore. I haven't had any actives for 6 or 7 years now.

Do you guys use pressure cookers on your jars or anything else? I was curious if that ever causes the jars to break or get damaged(like a chip of glass breaking off).

Yes, you need to pressure cook glass jars to sterilize. If you use a trivet you shouldn't have jars break. I was using a 6qt instapot without a trivet for quart jars till I found a good deal on a proper PC. I had 0 breakage (though had to run longer due to only getting to 10 PSI). Canning jars are made to withstand a pressure cooker and will last forever.

If you are going to sterilize your own grain and sub start from spores/agar and do it right. Sterilizing your own grain and sub then using a spore syringe is like building a race car but putting the cheapest gas in it you could find. Old school guys on the shroomery will be more helpful if you start from absolute scratch. If you want to troll a bit though post a question about Uncle Ben's tek and contams. You will elicit rage as sweet as that of the old Console vs PCMasterrace wars of years long past.

My first ever successful flush (a previous grain bag I had inoculated got a contamination that eventually won out). A little over ten grams. I've never had fungus this fresh, so I'm sure to trip harder than I ever have in my life-tonight.

Did my very first grow in 6 1/2 pint jars of brown rice flour, I kinda fucked up and did too much spore solution in each (30mls across the 6 jars) but it ended up working out. I'm at the tail end of the 3rd flush, got 30g dried total and now I'm going to bury the cakes in my backyard to hopefully get some more out of them at some point. Next run is going to be on substrate that I sterilize myself with my pressure cooker, I've gotten the ingredients to make my own agar plates as well as liquid culture so I'm gonna try to be more exact instead of shooting from the hip with spores. The shrooms seem potent as fuck, and it's such a fun hobby! Strains were B+, Golden Teachers, and Penis Envy. Next up is making some blue honey with them, I've heard it stores well.

Looking good, have fun! I'd recommend some oxygen absorbers and silica packs in a mason jar if you plan on storing any long term, ziplocks are terrible for moisture. Although I'm guessing those won't be around long enough to worry about that ;)

Has anyone hear ever ate wild amanitas? I found some yesterday and I'm debating eating them.

Reddit seems to think the amanitas have fly larvae in them and will get you sick

So I haven't before but make sure you ID them as an edible Aminita because there are toxic types. Also they should be heated and dried to convert Ibotenic Acid to Muscimol (see table 1 here) as Ibotenic acid will make you feel sick without much benefit to tripping. Do research on any mushroom you intend to consume, or you'll probably die and it'll hurt the whole time.

we are both :Da civilisation that cultivates

I've found a book at the library about organic mycoculture, and there are some excellent methods of scaling up in there. I'm going to try them on my oysters soon here. I want to see if I can get 10 lbs/week of various different oysters

I did the math, and I'd need 15 lbs of mushrooms per day to sustain myself, so 10 lbs a week should supplement just under 10% of my overall diet.

I'll report back on how it goes.

Happy days, Kiwi Friends!
I've got my first successful Fruiting -> Liquid culture jars growing without contamination!
Here's a few pictures, this is Blue Oyster mycelium.

Very happy with this. I make ~10 pounds of spawn a week now, and this really cuts down on my dependency on external vendors.
