@Sperg_rancher Looks amazing! I was planning on doing blue oyster from the store -> agar -> liquid inoculate -> grain spawn, any recommendations for spawn grain types? I've been mainly using rye berries but I also have popcorn and millet.

I buy 50 lb bags of "premium horse feed" for like 10$. it's mostly oats. I mix the oats with something high in protein, usually safflower seeds at about 16:1 oats: protein. however I've been having some break out success with peanuts as protein. they're expensive relatively speaking, but they take on the taste ever so slightly. popcorn it great to! a bit slower, but much hardier. haven't tried rye berries.

you have a solid idea of the process. though once you price you can get the mushroom to grow on agar you don't need I don't think. I just put bits of mushroom in the liquid culture. because the inside of a mushroom is sterile, you can use a syringe needle like a tree corer. that's what I did. first three cultures were either contam, duds, or both. ymmv.

Best of luck! I've seen some good things with the tek you're trying.

Thanks for the info! I've been looking at feed prices around me but most of the stores don't have their full stock listed online so I have to go in and check a few places out.

This is an amazing idea and I'm mad I didn't think of it myself lmao. I've seen people take inside slices using a sterile scalpal but your method seems a lot less likely to get contaminated. I'll let you know how it goes!

Go on the subreddit r/experimyco, they have all kinds of crazy grows on there. Saw golden teachers growing out of a Quran and one guy that did a bunch of experiments on cordycepts and blood medium.
I've seen pics like that of grows with Bibles and Qurans as the sub. The OG of weird grows is RogerRabbit and you can find a lot of good info on Shroomery.org he has posted. Just do a Google search for "Mycology RogerRabbit."
Be prepared for the extremely weird though. He posted the following image about 10 years ago.

Yes, those are cubes and yes it is what you think it is. No idea if he ever trooned out but....

I actually did see that picture before, I think in the shroomery "What your grow should look like" picture thread, disturbing to say the least lmao. To each their own I guess, truly a testament to how amazing mushroom's ability to grow is, I'll have to check out his other weird shit lmao.

Ok so I figured I'd update a little on my progress:

Here is one of my monotubs about 4 days into fruiting conditions, this is an active strain that colonized in Rye Berry grain spawn that I oven sterilized in a panic cause my PC didn't fit on my stove lol. Used a cheap spore syringe that I got as an extra with another order but it's been looking really good so far with no signs of contamination. The substrate was purchased online but I plan to do my own when I run out of this batch, it's a manure mixture. You might notice that the inside tub broke a bit when I tried to drill a hole in it, the plastic was too brittle, so I put a filter disk over it and put it in a larger tub with properly drilled holes with 4 filter disks. Kind of a double tub thing, it seems to be giving it a good amount of airflow. I would show more but I don't want to powerlevel too much.

Here is one of the petri dish cultures I made, the fluffy growth is due to not having enough nutrients in the agar solution. Recipe was Agar and Peptone with some sucrose (table sugar), I needed to also use a nutrient source like potato water and nutritional yeast (which I did in my newest batch of dishes). A hidden bonus was that they all came out pretty damn clean because there weren't enough nutrients for bacteria or mold lmao. Thankfully the strain I used is hyper aggressive in growth. I took this dish and transferred slices to the new, nutrient rich dishes, so now I just need to wait to see if they culture without contams. I reserved some non-cultured dishes to let sit for a bit to see if they grow anything, if not I'm going to inoculate them with a poplar mushroom spore syringe and start to clean up the genetics. I also got some king oysters, but those are for grilling tonight .

Here is a closeup of that mycelium, the whispy-ness of it is cause it's screaming at me "hey where the fuck is my food".

I think, if I remember correctly, he was one of the few to flush wood lovers indooors. Fungi disagreeing with kratom retired me 10+ years ago as much as I would have liked to continue.

Oh interesting, I haven't tried any wood loving strains yet but I will soon, I have some cyans LC but I was holding it until I get a better feel for some of the easier strains. That's too bad about the kratom and fungi not going well together, although having done both in various quantities I can see why it might not mix.

My almost 60 year old father has been badgering me about growing magic mushrooms at my place for him because my mom wont let him do it at theirs.

I know virtually nothing about growing mushrooms beyond the mechanics in minecraft and what Ive seen people mention in this thread.

Are these something that need lots of babysitting or can I just put them in a plastic bin and only (get my wife to) check on them a couple times a week?

I have five dillion other projects going on at once and I'd like to know what I'm in for before I decide to add 'become a pharmaceutical representative for my own father' to that list.

Mushrooms don't need much baby sitting, 98% of the grow will be just waiting till the next step. They do require upfront effort and time with pressure cooking, soaking grain, prepping, cleaning, and spawning to bulk. You could go the Uncle Ben's route which negates the pressure cooking and grain soaking. You could also go the pre-sterilized AIO grow bag route to lessen the effort but I've seen people get very mixed results with other's pre-sterilized grain AIO bags.

Jars can be forgotten about after inoculation. Spawning to bulk is the only time I really check on them every day or so, making sure I don't see any contaminate growth for the first few days. Then once I see pinning I'll start checking on them often to get ready to harvest.

I probably spend a full day in total for each grow I do in actual effort which takes two or so months. The difference between doing 1 jar or 7 jars in time is pretty negligible. Though you'll probably have way too many mushrooms with just doing a few jars unless your dad is downing an eighth every day.

Neglect Tek is a big 'research' area of amateur growers right now. It revolves around the premise of maximizing the ratio of time spent to yield.
I don't grow Cubes. From reading a lot online, one could get away with only working with the mushrooms 4 times before yield:

Work descriptionExpected DayWork timeTek Used
Inoculation day01-2 hrUB
Spawning day14-181-2 hrS2B
Fruiting day23-300-0.5 hrN/A
Harvest day30-370.5-1 hrFloat

Monotub update, we got pins baby! Starting to see more and more pop up, they really take off once they appear.

I also agree with the above, the largest timesink so far has been sterilizing grain. Otherwise it's just having patience and keeping an eye out for contamination.

Very useful information, thank you!
Seems like there's enough information in the thread and what you guys have suggested to have some good starting points, looks like I have some reading for the week.

This is the part of the farms that would be nice for people to see, just randos online being genuinely helpful and not trying to suicide trannies.
But that would bring the undesirables, so what can you do.

Good luck! It's pretty addicting once you get a solid flush of mushrooms, shroomery.org is also a great resource for different techniques if you wanna experiment (although it's layout is a massive eyesore IMO). I would 100% recommend getting a cheap still air box from amazon or making your own before starting, it'll cut down on contamination immensely.

I agree, the rest of the site acts as a natural gatekeeping mechanism for the less inflammatory boards. It is what it is, I'm just glad I get to share things in an open forum that doesn't require a fucking updoot minimum to post my little hobby project (fuck you reddit, not gonna post to your honeypot ass site anyway).

Finally popped my trich cherry. Was looking like I was going to have a solid second flush as well (:_(

Put the tray in the garage and I'm hoping that the fruits hurry up as it's only a small patch. Hopefully at most it's two days till they are ready.

I wish I saved the big texas mike video of him singing some country song he made up off the top of his head while showing the mushrooms he was growing.

None of you know who Big Texas Mike is but he rules.

Aw damn that sucks :( at least you got a flush out of it, if you have a garden bury the trich cake cause it's super good for plants.

Oh geez! Sorry to hear mate.
Careful tossing trich, it'll make spores still and lead to more contam in the future. I used to put a cap of bleach on the affected area to be safe. couldn't tell you if it helped. I think it did.
