They should do an episode that's completely separated from everything else that's just Mike, Crow, and Servo riffing on a movie they're watching in their apartment back on Earth. If that episode turned out too well, though, even more people would probably realize how mediocre the Jonah stuff is.
I suspect if you had Jonah and the rest work together for years long before being handed the reigns they'd put out decent stuff too.
Like how Kevin was on-board in the KTMA days, Mike in cable season 1, and Bill by... I think 6? Even if you're not on-screen performing that's still a long time to get a rapport with each other that shitting out a dozen or so tapings over a month or whatever won't be able to replicate under even the best circumstances, and then they're mixed into the extant cast so they had some training wheels as they got settled in.

You just created the one scenario where I would watch a new MST3K episode. Rotating guests hosts that have no chemistry combined with the mediocre writing of the new era? Nah, I'm good.

Not a fan of rifftrax. They try to jam in too many jokes and alot fall flat. I love mst3k because it's just a super comfy experience. Also I heard like two gamer gate jokes on rifftrax so these guys were really upset about gamer gate for some odd reason.
I find their stuff made by the late 00s that focuses on old bad movies works a lot better than their earlier stuff or their Hollywood stuff.
They really mesh well with crap 80s action movies, like Miami Connection. It's basically their version of b/w scifi schlock on KTMA/Comedy Channel MST3k.
but yeah when they a much more modern joke like referencing DBZ or GamerGate it's kinda weird

iirc, Jonah hand picked both Hampton and Baron because he was already friends with them. Jonah himself was selected because he was someone Joel already knew. It's not like they were a bunch of randos thrown together that had only ever met once casting was complete.

dang
still, the workaday grind week in and week out is a different feel than "I'm buddies with them"
also iirc didn't they do S11 riffing separately and then mix it in post?

Is there a torrent for all the Netflix episodes?

I haven't been able to get into Rifftrax much because a lot of the overall experience is lost without the host segments or even the silhouettes, you describing MST3K as a very "comfy" experience is perfect and that's lacking in Rifftrax.

What I have enjoyed is a collection of Rifftrax shorts I have like Drugs Are Like That, those are funny, but they are just shorts, Rifftrax feature films have just fallen a little flat for me.

That's writer Conor Lastowka. He shoehorns in bad game/cartoon jokes that the guys can't deliver because: A. It's not funny. B. They don't get it. C. Even if they get it, it's still not funny.

not sure about s11 and 12 combined, but def have seen them for s11 and s12 as two different torrents

as for getting into Rifftrax? maybe look for stuff you already enjoy semi-ironically, like if you like Sword and Sandal, they did a Sons of Hercules or two, lucha movies they did a Neutron, if you enjoy Harry Potter most of those were decent enough endevors
Santa And The Ice Cream Bunny is a pretty enjoyable pile of shit

It's a shame Film Crew was killed. It was a great follow up to MST3K.
I liked Cinematic Titanic more
for me Film Crew came off as similarly weak like early SciFi MST

tbf there's been jokes they didn't get about Japanese cartoons going back to fucking up the lyrics to Mach Go Go Go in season 2 of MST

While I haven't seen any of the Film Crew episodes yet I did like how they came up with another storyline reason for why they're doing what they're doing, before dropping that.

The most recent one I watched was The Last Shark, which was a movie I already enjoyed, but I don't remember any of the riffs other than "pretending your Blondie, when you're not Blondie" and this was only like a year ago I watched it, maybe it's just not a great episode?

I haven't seen that one.
I don't really follow RT religiously like I did MST, I just float in and out of that cytube channel

I haven't seen a lot of Cinematic Titanic but the ones I did watch didn't impress me too much. Felt too much like they were reading off a script and taking turns (I think some of them even had pages of notes or the actual script in front of them). Obviously that's what they all actually do but MST3K and Rifftrax at least hide it well enough.

For Film Crew, yeah, the episodes they did left something to be desired but they only did four and it was the first project the guys had did together in years. Mostly I liked that there was a physical presence and non-film parts, keeping more in the spirit of MST3K.

oh yeah CT they're not even trying to hide the easels they're reading off of even in the early non-live releases
if Film Crew had kept going for a while I probably would have warmed up to it, but Jim gonna Jim (back before that thing happened) so Jim made it clear that Rhino could choose between Film Crew or MST, or so the legends go
also they did cover that trashy movie stealth directed by Tennessee Williams, so that's cool

Anyone seen 'The Mads'? It's Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff doing characters similar to Forrester and TV's Frank while riffing on movies. I haven't seen any yet but I've heard they're good (but entirely from people who love everything MST3K related).

You know, I really wonder why a MST3K revival didn't happen as far back 2006/2007, when there was a huge wave of interest in the series I'm assuming due in big part to the early days of YouTube.

Seriously, I distinctly remember a lot of talk about MTS3K online back then across the net, this coupled with the vibe surrounding "so bad it's good" movies in general like Troll 2 (and a little later, The Room) and I really do think a MST3K reboot around that time would have garnered a ton of interest.

Instead we got everything from The Film Crew to Rifftrax, instead of just more MST3K, I wonder what's up with that?

To be frank I think it's retarded that MST3K was ever canceled to begin with, I honestly think it had the potential to have been running concurrently these last 30 years, Sci Fi Channel was incredibly short sighted to have canceled it when they did, because like I said, the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s would have been very receptive to it, I think part of the reason why the Netflix reboot didn't quite take off was simply a matter of waiting too long and not striking when the iron was hot.

I thought that was just a live event thing, are there cams?

also regarding "lolconner" watching Sons of Hercules - Land of Darkness at the moment and they mention "guh-laahh-guh" which is apparently boomer-ese for Galaga

I may be telling the story wrong because I'm a dumb drunken asshole on the onlines, but as far as I recall Jim Mallon was a colossal cuntrag about the MST ownership up until a daughter of his died/almost died and then he finally realized the error of his ways and sold his shit to Joel.
Back in the days of The Film Crew, legends (as I recall them) say that after the stuff that was made (for Rhino) Jim made it explicitly clear that their choice was The Film Crew or the MST3k Home Video Rights

Yeah, they're live. I'm not sure who does the recordings of them but I've seen a few up on TPB.
neat
if you could please spoonfeed me links that would be cool but I suspect I'll muddle through if you don't
