Is this SunnyD's alt or is something in the water that makes people go apeshit over the most boring garbage ever ? Yes this is the next best thing since sliced bread, but nobody can understand it. We are all idiots and only a chosen few can understand <insert random thing here> and truly see it for what it is.

This is for a game with a $250 million budget including a marketing blitz. By comparison, Slay the Spire 2, an indie title from a very small studio, had 574,638.

These folks are MELTING DOWN. I took a break to do actual IRL work and missed all three marathon topics apparently decide to do IRL PVP and just invade each others topics. Now theyre all locked as people cool down.

No bans here, not sure why the mods went scorched earth on it too.

The biggest issue is that, according to the people whose opinions I respect, it takes around 5-10 hours to get the hang of it and start finding enjoyment in the game.

That kind of learning curve is lethal to a multiplayer game.
I was interested in playing it as it does have a nice look to it and while I’ve never played an extraction shooter I like the idea of that type of game. But yeah I am not interested in something that will probably be dead in 6 months. Lol.

Steam stats discussion beyond anything more than a driveby "wowee this game is (un)popular" is cringe. It's not that deep and it encourages a herd mindset. New game didn't break 1million players day 1 at NA or CN peak hours? It's dead. Move on.
Marathon looks like a SHIT game but the numbers look good enough. 40k is a huge amount of players if you don't compare it forever game addiction slop.

I'd 100% agree with you except for the fact that the entire gaming industry continually shits itself over steam stats, which can only mean that it's actually a great tool to beat them with. Maybe if the gaming press weren't entirely captured and geared for gaslighting, people wouldn't be clinging to the only numbers that seem remotely real.

40k is fine but it also depends on how much the devs spent on it.

Bungie needed Marathon to hit and maintain 100k players for the game to be considered a success, is the problem.

The numbers are shit for a game that cost $250 million and much of that in promo. As pointed out earlier, Slay the Spire 2 had vastly more users and a tiny budget. At best, it's going to make back its budget. It's a financial disaster at present.

It may not be a studio killer like so many woke games are these days, but it's not exactly a roaring success either. Or any kind of success.

Napkin Math Time-
Estimated Budget - $250M
Retail Price- $40
Estimated Profit per Copy- $32
Estimated Sales (Upper End)- 900K
Est. Revenue from Copy Sales - $28.8M

Ok, these don't look good so far. Let's try to conceptualize the ongoing costs...

Est. Server Costs (Hard to say, lowball) - $100k/mo
Est. Employee cost (800 x $98k avg) - $6.5M/mo
Est. Average Players- 45K
Average Microtransaction Cost - $11
Season Pass - $3/mo
REQUIRED MONTHLY RECURRENT SPENDING PER USER TO BREAK EVEN- $145.00

Oh so it's fine then. Surely Marathon players are going to buy 15 skins per month.

A lot of people are acting like the Steam numbers are the whole picture for Marathon.

We don’t know what the PlayStation player count is, so we don’t have the whole picture.

It may not be a blockbuster, but we can’t definitively call it a flop without knowing the console counts as well.

This is true, another 20-30k would go a long way for Marathon's monthlies. But for an extraction shooter, I don't see console players ever being more than the PC count.

More because I have nothing to do rn, this time by attempting to estimate PS5 sales with the only reliable metric available to us- PSNProfiles.com

Sample 1: Oblivion Remastered - 1.1M Sold
Screenshot 2026-03-13 115245.png

Sample 2: Expedition 33 - 2M Sold
Screenshot 2026-03-13 115310.png

Sample 3: Ghosts of Yotei -4M Sold
Screenshot 2026-03-13 115347.png

Sample 4: Resident Evil 4 - 7M Sold
Screenshot 2026-03-13 115418.png

Sample 5: Final Fantasy XVI - 3M Sold
Screenshot 2026-03-13 120233.png

Now to estimate PSNProfiles.com users vs all purchasers...
Oblivion Remastered- 4%
Expedition 33- 4.7%
Yotei- 1.8%
Resident Evil 4- 2.5%
Final Fantasy 16- 5.2%

A couple of interesting theories from this sample- one, this site is full of weebs. Two, Yotei sales are inflated as fuck probably from bundle copies. Average comes out to 3.65%

So now onto Marathon:
Screenshot 2026-03-13 120524.png

Let's put a weeb tax on that average since Marathon is gaijin slop and go with 2.5% being reasonable here. By my bullshit calculations, we may be looking at 100-150k sales on PS5 so far.
