Gone Home wasn't the first, but it did make the genre popular. In a way, Gone Home was Resident Evil, and Dear Escher was Alone in the Dark.Did the "walking simulator" primarily spawn from Gone Home? That's the only one I can think of that was abject trash but I haven't played many, I remember the Edith Finch game was kind of cool if only for the interesting environmental graphics stuff they were doing. Do the Telltale games count?
As for abject trash. There were so many walking simulators, often with stock assets, that didn't go anywhere. The most famous failure was Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, which was shit even according to walking simulator fans and essentially killed the genre.
