NeoGAF & ResetERA - The Hilarious N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ Splintering "Gaming" Forum Circus

So I was actually looking into their evidence for the claim that "Katsura Hashino possesses virulently offensive and phobic views on the LGBT community, women, and other groups". If someone really is hateful and promoting violence then I think that's worth pointing out, so I was looking into their claims in 'good faith'.

Claim 1: "male party members express their shock and disgust upon learning that a female character they were hitting on is actually transgender"

Reality: They express shock, no disgust, that the character the game labels "Beautiful Lady" is male. They even lament that they struck out ("this sucks... we're 0 for 3".)

Claim 2: "the remake do not allow platonic relationships between members of the opposite sex, because Hashino "couldn't imagine boys and girls being friends"."

Reality: In the linked interview, he says he personally had no female childhood friends so he didn't know how to portray it in the game. Soejima agrees, and literally states that he's open to the idea that it is possible for boys and girls to be childhood friends – which is the exact opposite of this claim. That's literally a forged quote nowhere to be found in the cited interview.

Claim 3: "Of [Yosuke's] own accord, he goes out and buys a pair of skimpy women's swimsuits. He then attempts to guilt female party members Chie and Yukiko into putting them on against their will, arguing that they owe him an exhibitionist display because he saved them from getting into trouble [...] The game never criticizes these misogynist actions, nor presents them in any sort of negative light; in fact, they are actually rewarded, as, in the scene above, Chie and Yukiko eventually do put on the swimsuits (to their incredible discomfort). There is a clear narrative line that this type of behavior is to be condoned, or even celebrated, and that it is archetypal of the "cool, womanizing dude" Yosuke is always striving to be."

Reality: Yosuke was guilting them into hanging out and swimming with them; he brought up the bit about owing the guys *before* the swimsuits appeared, so it wasn't about owing an exhibitionist display. The only reason they end up in the swimsuits is because they said they'd join if they had swimsuits. The swimsuits weren't some skimpy fetish gear – they were the new releases from the department store. He IS criticised for his actions and punished – the girls get angry and push him into the cold river, and another character is puking upstream. The game encourages you to laugh at him getting what he deserved: girls being angry at him, freezing in cold water, and getting covered in vomit. The joke is that Yosuke thinks he's smooth, but his plots only make girls mad and backfire. I can't believe you have to explain a joke to these people.

Claim 4: "The game proceeds to handle this in as phobic and stereotyped a manner as possible. Kanji's dungeon is a bathhouse that is literally titled in-game as "MEN ONLY!! Kanji Tatsumi IN Rosy Steamy Paradise". In human form, his Shadow self has a permanent erotic grin on his face, reflecting the stereotype of the "perverted deviant homosexual". In boss form, Shadow Kanji is fully nude and embedded in a bed of roses, literally attacking the player with the double-male symbol (⚣), while flanked by a pair of stereotypical buff, oiled "anikis". It gets worse though. After defeating the boss, rather than going ahead with what may have still been a salvageable, uplifting scene of Kanji and his friends accepting his sexuality, the game immediately backpedals. We are told that Kanji is actually heterosexual (despite the game's previously exaggerative insistence to the contrary), and that he was really just trying to hide his love of "feminine things" like cute dolls and sewing."

Reality: Kanji was bullied by girls and called queer for liking things that weren't stereotypically masculine. He developed a fear of girls as a result. Both of those things led him to worry that he was gay and feel ashamed for hiding his identity. The game instead promotes the message that your hobbies and interests don't need to align stereotypically with your gender, don't determine your sexuality, and your sexuality shouldn't matter – we all fear rejection and just want to be accepted. And if you accept that a person can have any interests regardless of their gender and sexuality, then homosexuality ceases to be an insult to imply someone isn't a real man. But I guess ResetERA wants to put people into little boxes: if you like girl things, you're gay. Or trans.

Claim 5: "The game later reinforces this message [that he is heterosexual] by showing Kanji expressing feelings for the female character Naoto in a repeated and in-your-face manner, as if to say, "See? He's not one of them!"

Reality: He's attracted to Naoto before it's revealed that she's a girl, while she's dressing androgynously and everyone thinks she's a guy. That would imply he's bisexual. But for some reason LGT keep wanting to erase B.

I can't refute the rest because at that point I just stopped reading. They've got about as firm a grasp on the truth as Jussie Smollett.

Junie'ing is also a punitive measure like in Neogaf. A well known specimen who endured it is Lime who received it after making a thread about the importance of Fat Positivism. He was pretty assblasted about it and never showed his teleporting face again.
