I gotta disagree. GAF had Bishop and whatever that fat guy's name was. Also the militant trannies. They ran it like an asylum. They banned people for almost no reason every hour. It was a minefield. Seriously, think back to an average thread on a busy day on GAF - at least one person was banned a thread, sometimes for things as trivial as comparing a woman's ass to garlic bread (serious as a heart attack, I saw it happen).

While some of the same unsavory and stupid mods are on Reset, they at least seem more mature now and less prone to drop the hammer. I think because now that more people have a stake in the profits they're less willing to be reckless. I am sure they're still just as woke and PC, but a lot less likely to ban or act like a nanny.

NeoGAF started out as a normal enough gaming forum that gradually became infected with social justice nonsense during the early 2010s. When the attempt to wrestle control away from Evilore failed, the cancer that had infested the site violently expunged itself out, leaving the forum in a weakened yet gradually improving state.

ResetERA never stood a chance since it was literally the remnants of GAF's cancer. From Day 1, it was an authoritarian hellhole that despised anything they deemed "alt right" (especially JonTron, as their failure to get him removed from A Hat In Time occurred shortly before their self-imposed exile), and it has only became more unhinged since.

Where it took NeoGAF several years to implode, ResetERA's well on its way to go up in flames in just the few years of its life.

I think you underestimate the strength and virality of an echo chamber.

Metafilter is a hugbox forum that reminds me of ResetEra in many ways, though the mods are much less ban-happy and much more about appeasement towards the loudest, most indignant voices. They've had money issues and the problem of users leaving while people continuously screech about how it's a haven for racist fascist alt-right gamergate Nazis, just like ResetEra. It's divided into subsections, but the main focus isn't gaming, it's just general stuff.

The interesting correlation here is that I think they claim to have around 10,000 active users? And then someone did some calculations and demonstrated that 250 users contributed 50% of the content on the main site. So in many ways, the site's culture is designed to cater to just those 250 people. And just because they're frequent users doesn't mean they're the financial whales, donating the most money - they're just the voices that drive the site's community and vibe. And if they've self-selected to be idpol-obsessed scolds who engage in constant purity spirals, consistently driving other users away from the site, then you might have a good understanding as to why the place is struggling so hard to stay afloat.

I certainly think it would be informative to figure out the same sort of thing with ResetEra. Because it wouldn't surprise me if some of the users who get featured here a lot were a core group that supplied an outsized percentage of the engagement on the site, without even necessarily having paid any money to block ads, or whatever it is you get when you give the forum cash.
