EU New cars to be fitted with automatic speed limiters across Europe from this week - can they be turned off? - Another hell for Europe

New cars that are sold in Europe from this week will host automatically-installed speed limiters, following the introduction of a new EU law.

Even though the rule to install the technology does not apply in the UK, many of the cars will have been made in Europe and so will feature the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) anyway.

The technology allows the car to automatically restrict its speed based on GPS location, speed-sign recognition and cameras within the vehicle.

It does so by reducing the engine power until the relevant speed limit is met.

This is not done simply by applying the brakes, which could be dangerous, but by gradually reducing the engine's power.

However, drivers will first get a warning that they are driving too fast and be told to slow down before the measure takes affect.

The law will officially come into effect from this Sunday, July 7.

There are currently no plans for the Government to introduce a similar law here in the UK.

A spokesperson for the DfT told This is Money: "The Intelligent Speed Assistance laws coming into effect in July apply to the EU and Northern Ireland only, not Great Britain.

"We are constantly carrying out research into how transport users across all modes can benefit from the latest technology, ensuring journeys are safe, reliable, and cut emissions."

In the EU, drivers will be able to turn off the system every time they start their car. It cannot be permanently shut off.

We need an Open Source car project.
I remember there was some work put into that already, a quick search lead me to this, all electric ones unfortunately.

Well this is just the first stage you see. First there’s the technology to get you used to being slowed down. Then it will be used to track you mile by mile. Then it will be automatic fines for being 1mph over, and then it will be that you’ve exceeded your carbon credits for the month. Or that you said a racism and are now banned from driving. Or automatic 15 min city penalty for driving into a city section you’re not allowed to
Then, owning an older car will be a felony because they can't control what the drivers does with it. They will use the Safety Measures and the Emissions as the reason to ban them when that time comes.

Different thing, but in the States they are already fitting new cars with this bullshit Auto Start Stop function that turns your engine off at stops to save on emissions.

I just bought a new Outback and I have the manually turn this off every time I turn the car on, the only way to permanently disable it is to pay $100 bucks to some engineer who made a physical barrier to the function online.
Auto stop start is a way to game CAFE numbers to increase city gas mileage.

this will be a giant clusterfuck for the EU.
The Regulation is so "badly" written that it leaves alot of space, space german car makers used to make it just one button push to turn it off while most other companies made it complicated.
There will be alot of bitching but even the socialist german government knows that they cant give in to more EU car regulations.

Doesn’t Japan do this too? They limit everything to 120 mph. Car mod culture boomed over their due to people getting pissed about it.

There’s people who’ve unironically done the math and a lot of older cars have better mpg and are less polluting than a lot of newer cars.
It's easier to make up shit about newer cars

The fact that "drivers will be able to turn off the system every time they start their car" means that the system has a vulnerability before it even starts.

I can't see emergency service vehicle drivers wanting to piss about switching this off in an emergency, so there will be a permanent bypass hidden away somewhere in the ECU. software.

I give it two months before someone infinitely smarter than me has worked out how to bypass this.

the EU implementing a dumb idea i had when i was 5. great job EU, you have the smarts of a particularly retarded 5 year old.

my mom's vehicle has that. ive always wondered if starting the engine every time you are at red light really does save emissions. and when ive driven the car, it is such an annoying feature. i really hate it and i do consider myself something of an environmentalist,
I thought it was going to be some kind of built in hard limiter that prevents a car from going over 90 or something. But sensors, cameras, etc? That's so finnicy. What if you're rushing to the hospital? What if shuts you down while you're crossing train tracks? What if it malfunctions while you're on the highway? Insane. So many edge case scenarios for no practical reward.
Even if the tech gets it right, it's still dangerous. While slowing down is often the safer course of action, if you have been driving for a while, you will know that sometimes the correct course of action is to speed up and pass quickly. And now, unless everyone slows down to and just regularly drives 35 km/h under the speed limit, that ability to quickly pass will be removed.

yeah, there are many situations where it makes sense for a person to speed up rather than go slow. and that is when it works, if the tech fails, it could be disastrous.

it is one thing which always annoys me is seeing people slow down when trying to merge onto the highway. i rant against this so hard because it almost always causes an accident or causes traffic problems. when leaving an on ramp to get onto the highway, 99% of the time the better solution is to hit the gas and get up to speed. retards trying to merge into 65 mph while going 30 is always a problem.

There will be a hot rod renaissance, with these bullshit mandates and EVs all over the place. Men will want to drive real cars, rowing their own gears.
I thought the population of Europe at this point was Somali-Arabic men who didn't see a car until they were 23, and pasty Innsmouth people who have suffered ego death.

i wonder if classic cars are going to become a lot more popular when all the boomers that are hoarding them start to die off and they realize their "i know what i got" attitude isn't going to cut it with younger people that don't care about matching number kind of nonsense

One thing that I find a bit funny is when Americans dunk on Euros only to find out we (the US) either has the same policies in the works, have them already, or (this is relatively rare) have them even more stringently than the Euros. We're all in the same boat. This just means that the used car market will grow, as well as demand for people who know how to disable the system.

now let's talk about guns

and then let's also forget about silencers and SBRs because it makes my position look weaker

What it's going to be like in Europe in a few years:

I don't see the problem here other than having power for the AC but if you have it turned on,the motor won't stop.

At this rate, motorcycles are gonna be kings of the road again. Because the tech on that shit is far simpler than a car and removing globohomo inc shit will be far easier.
