New Games That Don’t Suck Thread

Anything Zelda Mario Donkey Kong Metroid and Kirby related on the Switch is super fun. You can just get any of those games and lose at least a few hours. I was playing the Donkey Kong Country Returns HD remaster on Switch and it was pretty good.
It's a shame that Nintendo charges full price ($60!) for a fucking 15 year old game that barely had anything done to it. It's only in 1080p too on top of that not even 4k. Nintendo does make fun games here and there, I'm particularly a fan of Metroid and F-Zero, but using the switch just feels like such a massive scam.

It's weird to me that so many modern games that are good are metroidvanias, almost all of them. With that in mind and while we're talking about Nintendo, a newer game that I've been addicted to is F-Zero 99, it's the first new F-Zero game in like 20 years and it acts as an updated version of the snes F-Zero that plays online. I spent a lot of time playing the snes F-Zero as well as the gba entries and I always wanted to be able to play those games online so it fells like this game was made for me. Nothing too crazy, just a simple online racing game. I'm still holding on to hope for a full on new F-Zero GX styled game for the Switch though.

It’s funny and tragic that Miyamoto shit out a new and actually innovative F-Zero (for free) and very few people actually noticed, because it wasn’t a sequel to GX.

Cloud Gardens is a gardening game where you populate dioramas of urban decay with plants.

Very good game. Way too long and expensive though. Buy it on sale.

Door Kickers 2 just officially released.
It's a top down* tactical shooter/puzzle game you control 1 or 2, up to 20 individual soldiers in 'great war on terror' type missions. The standard army squad has four classes; rifleman, support (light machine guns), marksman and grenadier (rifleman with underbarrel GL). There is also a squad of Nowheraki (the fictional setting of the game) SWAT, and a CIA squad with very limited numbers but who can move around and complete objectives without being shot at.

All of whom have access to throwables like flashbangs and frag grenades, mountable door- and wall demolition charges, in addition to each faction's specialized equipment.

It's been in early access for a while and I personally have several hundred hours ingame. The biggest changes in the full release are the campaign modes, and squad doctrines which improve your squad's performance and allow you to play.. less conservatively.

The game has a pause function which you can activate as much or as little as you want, in combination with planning out ahead your troopers' movements as much or as little as you want. Pic related shows the plan (the tactical spaghetti) for a no pause, 'single plan' completion of a level but, while that can be a fun challenge, I personally tend to plan just the initial 10-15 seconds so I don't have to draw the lines every time I restart a level.

*It's top down but everything is actually 3d and you can tilt the camera a little.k

I recommend Pseudoregalia:

It may have a furry mc, but it's not a furry game.
It is a 3D platformer metroidvania with some of the most satisfying movement I've ever seen in a 3D platformer.
It's not really focused on challenges, but more on exploration, however the design of the areas are open enough for you to make your own paths by using all the possible movement mechanics, it makes for a really fun traversal.
It's a really short game, like 3-5h, but the metroidvania design gives it a lot of replayability. I have 16h played because I just can't get tired of hopping around.
I wish the guy would go back and finish his robot platformer.

This is a great thread.

Minishoot Adventures
Zelda+Twin Stick shooting/Bullet Hell, that all there is to the game and it's really fun in it's simplicity. While I assume it's not as difficult as your regular shmup, the movement mechanics, the very simple artstyle and music and just the overall vibe of the game makes it really fun.

I suspect considering how many projects are on his itch io that he may be one of those "twitter devs" who make really cool clips of unfinished games for the sole sake of putting mp4s on twitter and then moving on to the next project to make mp4s out of.
It's unfortunate but at least we've got Pseudoregalia out of him.

nimrods guncraft survivors is a fine vampire survivors clone. very easy to make a broken character.
Manor lords is a fun enough game in its current state, active development. its a city builder in the vein of tropico that also has real time strategy combat.

There are people out there paying that much money if not more for games that are garbage or at least total disappointments. I would gladly give Nintendo $60 for a Mario game that's fun and enjoyable.

Nintendo gave up competing with Sony and Microsoft a long time ago. Back around the release of the Wii. If you want cutting edge graphics with high resolutions, you won't get that with Nintendo systems. Though I believe the Switch is capable of 1080p in docked mode. I hooked it up to my 1080p IPS monitor, and it looked fine. If you want good fun games that look good enough with whacky fun art styles and colors, then Nintendo is the way to go. You also don't have to worry about any woke shit in Nintendo's first party games. You can play a game without being bombarded with THE MESSAGE.

New, as in, within one year of release? I haven't played it yet but Ender Magnolia is probably good since it's a sequel to Ender Lillies, which is a good game. Same for Ys 10, I just got Ys 9 but I'm sure Ys 10 is good too.

That series is fucked lmao, total localizer death

I heard about that one from ThorHighHeels actually. Say whatever you want about that guy but man oh man he understands art direction, made me absolutely appreciate all the little grimy details that went into making this games world feel lived in.
He's pretentious as fuck and a libtard faggot but his taste in games is impeccable.

He put up a video today and I think he's trooning out.
Not even a little surprised.

Mostly, yes, and thank God for it.

If it's an actual NEW game from Nintendo that's $60 I'm all good with it, I don't even mind Tears of the Kingdom being $70. But re-releasing a 15 year old game and selling it at full price is too much. I don't care about the resolution too much but if you're releasing an old game and slapping HD on the cover and charging full price it better be VERY HD. Even their older switch games you'd think would be discounted by now but no. NEVER. If you're lucky you might find Captain Toad's Gay Adventure or Mario Party 329 discounted for $1. Stingy jap bastards.

Also, I think Nintendo made one of their characters trans in one of the newer Mario games. Not sure which game or character but I remember seeing everyone make fun of it here when it came out.

They did, he's just being a retard.

It's still a drop in the bucket compared to the competition but that was rather egregious, though it was mostly NoA and the character in question was already some flavor of faggot canonically anyway. That was inexcusable but pretty much a one-off so far, but NoA does do this shit a lot (like Animal Crossing removing gender for "style").

Blade Chimera
I played like 30 minutes of it and it was a huge bore with how easy it was, does it ever get difficult?
It's another situation where the localizer was a Something Awful goon.
Tbf it might be the goon turned troon.

It's mainly that metroidvania (and roguelites) is easy mode game development. As long as you don't fuck with the formula too hard and have passable art and combat it will feel fun and have good game length.

You need to be delusional to think Nintendo isn't just as guilty at this - Dodgy translations, censorship, characters turned into gender neutral blobs, Pokémon GO trannies, body type A/B...

Thread tax -
* ASTLIBRA Revision - 2D RPG. Really fun on hard mode. Good plot beats without being too formulaic.
* Far Away - Chink VN, really good.
* The Hungry Lamb - Another chink VN that's really good.
* Chrono Ark - Anime Roguelite deck builder. Not my cup of tea but the time I played was really fun.
* OPUS: Echo of Starsong - VN with space exploration. You will cry.
* Stella of The End - Post apocalypse VN dad simulator.
Probably too many VNs.

You can't blame everything on localization.

Doesn't, unfortunately. Not even the super true ending final boss who you can beat at like level ~35 or so even if they one/two shot you, but have a stupidly easy set of attack patterns.
It's unfortunate because team ladybug has excellent art and music but their games are all short and easy. I'm fine with short and sweet but at some point you just end up wanting more. Loved the OST in Blade Chimera.

Yeah they were easy but at least they had cool mechanics to work with in Touhou/Records, here it was just 30 minutes of hitting enemies without even needing to dodge.

If anything it's worse than the competitors since TLoU2 was at least 18+, but Nintendo games are all ages.

I gave a bit of commentary on this game here.

The ending you get for beating the true final boss can barely be called a wet fart. Basically just a couple lines of text. Borderline insulting.

No, just almost everything. It's NoJ's fault for letting it happen though. It will inevitably seep into their work too if left to fester.

They're putting it in themes and such which are for all ages, but that's a good point.

Centennial Case is a really interesting mystery visual novel from Square Enix. And it has full motion graphics which actually don't look like they were done on the cheap.
