The simple answer is they are a bunch of idiots.
PUA originally comes from Internet Marketing, which is the 21st century equivalent of door-to-door salesmen combined with a MLM scam. All this shit was developed in an attempt to get someone to buy a product. It uses every dirty trick in the book to do it (play on fears, insecurities, and such). Some of the PUAs even make flowcharts to show how it's supposed to work.
When PUAs suggest approaching hundreds/thousands of women, they are using cold-calling, which is a horrible technique for selling something, let alone dating. It's much easier to go after "warm" targets, people who are already interested in product (or show interest in dating). The PUAs and Internet Marketers are both simply too dumb to realize this.
Here's a dose of insanity: some PUAs don't care if they catch STDs because AIDs is the only one that's lethal and the others are treatable. Note that these guys advocate going to third-world countries where some infectious diseases are more prevalent, let alone STDs.
