Its not so much balldo-guarding as it is Ethan Van Sciver's usual obsessions with "loyalty" and people being "stabbed in the back".
Ethan doesn't human well. Everything to him that involves other people is transactional. He does something for you.....and you owe him unquestioned loyalty for the rest of your life no matter what he might do in any situation or how much time has passed. You are supposed to be a faithful foot soldiers against anyone he declares to be his enemy. While you owe him everything, to him he owes you nothing at all.
The other part of the script is the great and wonderful man like Ethan Van Sciver being continuously stabbed in the back. He sees himself as Comics Jesus selflessly giving to everyone but inevitably being betrayed by an endless series of ungreatful people. Its so much a part of his personal narrative that he even puts it in his comics.
In Ethan's mind, everyone in lawtube owed Nick a debt that could never be paid and a debt would obligate them to self-destructively make excuses for Nick until the end of time. To Ethan, the only reasons any of them could have for not serving Nick as slaves to the end of time was (Per Ethan's own view of himself and his own slaves) was (1) Resentment by the other lawtubers of Nick's success and (2) Greedy lawtubers trying to steal Nick's business. There is nothing else.
