Or just use an XHD and roms. Plug it in indeed. Every console, every game. Free. Beat that deal goytendo, I will own things, and I will be happy.
Yeah, I really don't feel sympathy anymore for people who keep buying and re-buying every emulator rehash/refresh for each subsequent console instead of just downloading the fucking ROMs and emulating them on whatever hardware they've got handy. Ironically anything besides a console can run all that shit. Phones, tablets, PCs, even fuckin' Macs can do it.

"Yeah but I wanna play it on my TV with my Nintendo controller!" Neat. So go plug in your NES and get playing. Quit paying REPEATEDLY for the same fucking ROM dump and a (likely stolen from open-source) emulator they've barely tuned well enough to run on the new vending machine, er, sorry, console.

I haven't kept up with Nintendo in almost a decade. Have they made literally anything good since like BOTW? Used to be a massive Nintendo kid, to the point of being one of the 5 people to have a Wii U and the only person in existence to own Super Luigi U. Feel a little sad that I don't know what this company is doing these days and maybe want to see if they have made anything that is worth buying.

For the mainline big budget releases minus Game Freak's solo Pokemon games due to thier incompetence at technical level and Metroid Prime 4 due to the absurd development hell it went through and being made from a bad foundation in regards to what the game was intended to be, a lot of thier output has largely been the same as it always has in terms of the coding quality, though given the piviot to more open-world games (or more often games with open areas), your mileage may varry.

As far as spinoff titles go, thier quality has not gone up since the Wii U for the most part and quite a few of them suffer from the same problems of lack of content or being too barebones to warrent playing at all.

Though take this with a grain of salt as i've not played a lot of Nintendo's switch catalog and got this through osmosis from what people who don't act like the corporation was never the pretty evil entity they always were or act like they shot up thier entire family everytime they do anything.

What games specifically would you say are noteworthy?

It really depends on what you're into. Only going to talk about things I've played here, and the only Nintendo series I'm really into are Mario and Zelda.

A lot of people like Super Mario Odyssey. I'm not a huge fan, but if you liked a lot of the 3D platformers for N64 like Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, I think you'd really like it. It's very much in the style of a semi-open world N64 Rare collectathon.

If you haven't played it, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has probably grown into legitimately the best Mario Kart they've ever made with something retarded like 96 tracks. If you already played it for Wii U, I don't know if it's worth the full price for switch. It's the same game with more tracks, characters and an unfucked battle mode.

They rereleased 3D World and it has this little open-world 3D Mario game included called Bowser's Fury. It's a combination of the controls and power ups from 3D Land/World, with the mission style collect-the-stars gameplay from Mario 64 and a small open world in the style of BOTW. I think Bowser's Fury is the best Mario game since the Wii era and one of the best games on the Switch. It's kind of crazy it was buried in a bundle with a 3D World port.

Tears of the Kingdom is basically BOTW 1.5. If you like BOTW it's more of the same, but at $70 USD it's more expensive than a regular Switch game. Is it worth it? It really depends on how much you like the BOTW style gameplay. If you're one of those people who can play BOTW over and over, or if you remember BOTW fondly and haven't played it in a long time, you'd probably really like TOTK.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is a pretty good 2d Mario game, but it's a bit on the easy side. The art direction and level design are really good. Again, they tried to do the open thing where you can play most of the worlds in any order.

Zelda Echoes of Wisdom is their attempt at an openish world 2D Zelda where you control Zelda and you use clones of enemies and objects in the world to solve puzzles. It's OK. Solid 7/10 title, nothing more, nothing less.

Mario Kart World for Switch 2 is an OK game. It has worse courses than 8, but better controls and graphics. It has this big open world, and all the tracks are connected by little side roads, so your milage will vary depending on how much you like open world shit. It's also an expensive game on a console that costs too much. I just replaced my fridge and it costed less than I paid for a Switch 2 with Mario Kart.

TLDR Nintendo is currently in their open-world era where they are trying to make everything kind of like BOTW. Results have varied.

I am getting a little sick of open worlds, I'd like a few more self contained mission games like Princess Peach's Showtime or Luigi's Mansion 3

Assuming we're counting anything published by Nintendo, I liked Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Famicom Detective Club: Emio. I'd bet the Xenoblade games are good, but I haven't played them myself (I've got tons of JRPGs from the 90s and 00s to play...)

I didn't think to mention Echoes of Wisdom at first, because yeah, I pretty agree with this. It's good but not great. As far other ok 7/10 games go, I'd also count Pokemon Legends Arceus. The last couple Hyrule Warriors games are also alright.

Well, that was fast:

Since BOTW, would say the best ones are as follows.

2017 (Post-BOTW in March):
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Booster Course Pass
  • Splatoon 2
  • Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Super Mario Odyssey
2018:
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
2019:
  • Yoshi's Crafted World (It's over hated)
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses
  • Ring Fit Adventure
  • Luigi's Mansion 3
2020:
  • Paper Mario The Origami King
2021:
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  • DC Super Hero Girls Teen Power (Yeah, I know, but it is surprisingly fun)
  • WarioWare: Get It Together!
  • Metroid Dread
2022:
  • Kirby & The Forgotten Land
  • Splatoon 3
  • Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
2023:
  • Super Mario Wonder (Switch 2 Edition preferred)
2024:
  • Another Code Recollection
  • Endless Ocean Luminous (It's okay, but not a lot of content, would play Wii titles instead)
2025:
  • Mario Kart World
  • Donkey Kong Bananza
  • Kirby Air Riders

These are the most notable/underrated of what I have played, not including remakes/ports (only included significantly changed or added content ones). I will admit that I dropped off Switch due to school/work eating my time in the later half (post-2020), but this list should be a good enough recommendation sheet for what new titles are worth the try.

Mini review.
Mario Kart World does not suck ass.

I skipped it when I bought Switch 2 to my kid, because Mario Kart 8 was so fucking bad. One of the worst driving games I had ever played... at least paid for.
But now we got World from library to test out and it actually is fun game.

Astral Chain (second party)
Every Xenoblade game (first party), if you have a modded console or are emulating use the fan retranslations
Mario Odyssey

That's all I can really think of for noteworthy switch games I actually enjoyed that aren't ports (half the Xenoblade games are though). Metroid Prime Remastered is pretty good but that's just the original game with pretty graphics.

Hardly any of them that's first party. Brothership was a bit of an cash grab. Anything that's presently on the Switch 2 is just there to fill out the lineup. Game Freak is busy doing their own thing, but have genuinely fucked up with the initial release of Scarlet and Violet. Both of the Rabbid games are surprisingly good, but relatively easy, but the second one dumbed down a lot of shit. Everything else is just Nintendo trying to make an late investment into the open world shit

On the plus side, there's Astral Chain, but the ending is anticlimactic

The smash bros. gamecube controller adapter has been a godsend. I'm fine with using an xbox controller for everything, but actually playing emulated GC games with the GC controller just feels so right (plus some games like Sunshine need it). Hell it's almost unfair for the billion dollar multi-national monopolies out there lol. They can only offer me mid games, "rent forever" subscription """""services""""", and nigger over-representation in all of their media - you know, it just isn't convincing me to buy their slop :)...

I can even reuse my crusty old dual shock controller to play MGS4 and Dragon's Crown on RPCS3.

Based. IMHO the Wavebird remains the finest wireless controller ever put into human hands. The regular wired GC controller was great too.

jfc games are so expensive my wishlist is over $1000 and it's only about a dozen games.
I like to think of wishlists like that as a great motivator for vendors to look and say "oh damn look at how much money we could make if we slashed our prices a couple times a year in sales and 'settled' for 'metric assloads of money' instead of the 'fucktons of money' we were hoping for." I know Steam tells devs how many people have wishlisted their stuff so hopefully that number sits out there and taunts the fuckers who never put games on sale.

They'll never admit it but even a 25% off sale on a major AAA game (or even a high-priced AA game) moves a lot of units. A $1k wishlist is worthless to them, but the same list that empties out thanks to a sale is still worth the $700-$800 they eventually got from it.
