I HATED having to play through the arcade game twice to get the Nintendo coin. Say what you will about DK64 but my memories of it are very rose tinted except for that one part. It wouldn't have so bad if not for the fact that they only gave you one life. I wish they woukd put it on NSO because being able to rewind and use save states for that part would make it a lot more tolerable.
I replayed DK64 within the last year. It is a pretty good 3D platformer but Rare fell a bit too far into a formula for DK. Banjo-Kazooie had their standardized challenges like jinjos and witch switches, but that game (and Banjo-Tooie) had much more variety within each level.I was 10 when it came out. I rented it at blockbuster for two consecutive weeks, got all the way up to the castle world, but then when I got the game for Xmas, I think that was one of the first games that truly felt taxing on a replay. But at least I got that expansion card from it for Perfect Dark months later.
DK64 is more or less the same ten challenges in every level, rinse and repeat but with a different texture and background music. A good game but definitely a step back.
