Mario Kart World is my highest playtime, and you know what, I like it. I really like it. World has arguably risen to a top contender of the series, maybe number 1. Mechanically, this is the best a Mario Kart has ever felt. It has a certain energy to it that is unrivaled by previous entries between the rail hopping, wall riding, and general bounce.
I don't think many have argued that Nintendo doesn't generally release quality titles. Just that the price they want people to pay for what's basically a good Mario Kart games is bananas.

Think about this... Their handheld line used to get remakes of old home console games. The GBA had a bunch of SNES ports, 3DS had ports of eveything from N64 to Gamecube to Wii U titles. These ports on handheld systems were generally sold at a much lower price than full home console releases. So they merged their handheld and home console lines into one to do this hybird shit with Switch and Switch 2. Guess what? That remake you would have gotten for $30-40 on 3DS? It's now a fucking $70 Switch 2 game. They treat every physical release the same. A Paper Mario remake gets priced exactly the same as a brand new 3D Mario or Zelda.

World has been getting hit with waves of criticism that go beyond the cost. The Intermissions have killed the game for many. Personally, I don't mind it, but the "straight line" gameplay has been a complaint levied at the title since the start.

Uh... stick in KirbyatFL (Star Allies was also present, though pretty generic,) Mario Wonder, Metroid Dread, Luigi's Mansion 4, the two Xenoblade remakes' packed in expansions, PL Arceus if that's your speed, Pikmin 4, Mario+Rabbids, the Bowser's Fury side-content in 3DWorld. Honestly, there was a ton of stuff and most of the Wii U ports run better and are cheaper on Switch, meaning you pretty much don't need a Wii U unless you really want to play those two cut Captain Toad levels, Nintendoland or Star Fox Zero. Its hard to argue that the Switch's library was anything short of stellar, clearly the best lineup since, what, the DS? I think it surpassed any of the home consoles, at least in amount of quality first party releases. Maybe NES with its four fucking Mario games, two, Zeldas, two Star Tropics, etc., hard to compete with that.
The library was 90% Wii U releases and indie games. It's finally at the end of its life and there's only really Xenoblade 2+3, Zelda TOTK, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Animal Crossing that were great Nintendo first parties and I'm half tempted to chalk off Mario Kart and Smash Bros as they're functionally identical to the Wii U versions.
The Switch is a weird mix of highs and lows. It has a genuinely impressive library of originals that keeps it varied, with many passing under the radar. These posts really don't do it justice, from my experience we got:
  • 1 Super Smash Bros - Ultimate
  • 1.5 3D Mario titles - Super Mario Odyssey & Bowser's Fury
  • 1 (2) 3D Zelda title(s) - TOTK, though BOTW may as well be a Switch title.
  • 1 3D Kirby - Forgotten Land
  • 2 Splatoon titles - 2 & 3
  • 1 Pikmin - Pikmin 4
  • 1 2D Metroid - Metroid Dread
  • 2 Fire Emblem titles - Three Houses & Engage
  • 2 Mario + Rabbids titles - Kingdom Battle & Sparks of Hope
  • 1 Luigi's Mansion - Luigi's Mansion 3
  • 1 2D Yoshi - Crafted World
  • 1 Paper Mario - Origami King
  • 1 Zelda Warriors title - Age of Calamity
  • 2 Fire Emblem Warriors titles - Fire Emblem Warriors & Three Hopes
  • 1 Another Code - Recollection is more of a reimagining, so I am counting as new.
  • 1 Cruisn' title - Cruisn' Blast (Technically came out for arcade, but this is the only home console port)
  • 2 Originals - Ring Fit Adventure & ARMS
  • 2 Capeshit Licensed Titles - People forget Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and DC Superhero Girls Teen Power, and yes, both are surprisingly good
One could go even further than this, these are just the titles I have played and find worth grabbing for the system. I left out tons of Pokémon between the main series and spin-offs like Snap. I am sure others would also include the 2.5 Xenoblade titles, the 2 WarioWares, Astral Chain, Clubhouse Games, Peach Showtime and maybe 1-2 others.

So recently there has been a wave of speculation and rumors for a new direct in the usual February time and a few potential titles to be shown off.

The largest title thrown around currently will be a new 3D Mario in a similar vein to Super Mario 64 and Odyssey. I guess the Mario/Donkey Kong teams split off, allowing for both games to be developed simultaneously. Would also explain the 8-year gap between titles.

In addition, sounds like the Odyssey team was not the only one to have been split off to develop two games. It is heavily rumored that Nintendo, more importantly the Mario Kart team, is developing a boxing game - so ARMS 2. Once again, given the huge gaps and development time for World, it seems more than plausible ARMS 2 entered development alongside World.

Finally, the composer for Xenoblade, Yasunori Mitsuda, is posting up that he is printing scores and recording music. Obvious speculation is that a new MonolithSoft game is on the horizon, likely Xenoblade.

1 DE was in 2020 and 3 was announced in the first direct of 2022, we just got X DE last March but Monolith (main A studio that does Xenoblade) has been on a hiring spree since 2023, specifically for an open world title. X was the only Xenoblade game that is actually open world and the extra story added in X DE answers a lot of old questions but opens up a bunch of new ones and leaves a lot of room for a sequel, which they said back in 2017 that they want to do an X sequel after they finish Xenoblade 3. Takahashi also said in the same interview that he wanted to do an M rated game with violence and sex, and joked that he thinks Nintendo would let him, but Nintendo has since released that Emio game that is rated M, and its the only thing they said they wanted to do in that interview that they haven't technically done yet

Browsing the sales on the eShop/eSlop- has anyone played this one? It look decent enough, still not sold at 9 bucks, looks better at 4.99.

If anything, this only shows how much the Playstation brand has fallen out of favor in Japan, as the Switch 2 is about 3.25 million (out of a total 7.345 Million rounded up) away from outright outselling the PS5 as a whole, especially since the current sales of all 3 PS5 models are absolutely pitiful by comparison, only beated out by the Xbox still being rarely bought in Japan, and the PS4 having some new old stock being dug out (while still having outsold the base PS5 by a large margin).

Nintendo gave Japan a Switch 2 that costs around 100 dollars less than anyone else's. Wow, not charging out the ass for it really makes a difference, doesn't it.

The Japanese version of Switch 2 is region locked and much more reasonably priced, I think over $100 cheaper than it is in the US. It's not surprising it's doing well there, because the cost of the fucking thing is its biggest issue.

So in giant warning sign news. Target has been running 30 dollars off 100 dollars in Nintendo game purchases promotion. It seems to include ALL Nintendo games.

Right after Christmas.

So hypothetically I get a Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, what else is coming soon that's relatively big?

Because it's really strange how the Switch 2 is selling gangbusters, is very clearly more powerful than the Switch 1 but the big hype is all the re-releases of Switch games with nothing BIG coming soon.

I get that it's likely Smash, a 3D Mario etc. are coming eventually, but even the Wii U had a load of big "Wait and see" projects in the pipeline, it genuinely looks like Mario Tennis is meant to be the big game to hold us until Summer.

This is going to be the first Nintendo system, outside of the notable exceptions of GBA, Virtual Boy and DS, not to have a new mainline Mario game within a year of release. Even in the case of GBA and VB, though, they put out a Wario Land which was kind of a continuation of the Mario Land series. Maybe they'll pull something out of their ass before this summer.

Wii U took literal years for 3DW to come out. And then Gamecube took 9 months for Sunshine. They're playing with fire not giving people their massive Mario title in year one. Maybe say that they got DK instead, which they did, but what else have they gotten?

As to stuff that's announced but not out yet, you do have that single player Splatoon campaign. I feel like people are under-selling that.

So far, they have really only announced 5 Switch 2 exclusives, don't know if any of these peak your interest.
  • Mario Tennis Fever - February 12th
  • Pokémon Pokopia - March 5th
  • Yoshi and The Mysterious Book - Autumn 2026
  • Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave - 2026
  • Splatoon Raiders - 2026

Splatoon and Fire Emblem seem to be the ones carrying next year, and even that can feel like a stretch given their current reception. We still are a month away from Nintendo's typical Direct date, so I am expecting much more to pad out the lineup. Xenoblade and 3D Mario are the most likely, with further rumors being for ARMS 2 and an Ocarina of Time Remake (given more credence due to LEGO making OoT sets this year).

Would argue a technicallity on this one...

3D Mario are the most likely
Why do people keep coping about a 3D Mario happening this year? EPD just wrapped up development on DK Bananza and are knee-deep in development of Splatoon Raiders. Unless they've been pulling triple-duty, which I highly doubt, at best, we'll see it announced late this year for a 2027 release

Splatoon and 3D Mario do not share developers, they are different parts of EPD, different cities even (Mario is out of Tokyo while Splatoon and most other things are in Kyoto.) Splatoon and Animal Crossing are the ones that share EPD groups but even then they seem to be seperate teams now except for high level producer roles.
