Nintendo Switch Presentation - Live Stream - Post Presentation Discussion

While I look forward to some of the games that they displayed, (Zelda and Odyssey looked fantastic) I can't quite say I look forward to paid Nintendo online, battery life with a maximum of 6 hours and no backwards compatibility, with the later being a huge issue to me. Being the successor of both the Wii U and 3DS and not being able to play games from those consoles is super gay, and I know that's not going to be something easy to fix. Maybe at best we'll get some ports, but that might mean paying double for the poor fools that bought a Wii U (like me).

Ehhh, I'll definitely hold off on buying this, right now it's matter of waiting and seeing how everything develops. I predict this selling better than the Wii U at least, which is not saying much.

I'm sort of amazed at how weak the line-up is for this year. I thought they'd score an easy win by porting some Wii U titles that few people own.

I'll still be picking one up for Zelda, at the very least and Mario Odyssey looks like it could be incredible.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2...I am now hyped.

So... after watching the announcement and sitting on the idea of pre-ordering a Switch... I have decided no. Probably won't be buying one until holiday 2017 at the earliest.

Here's the breakdown:
The new console costs $300. That gets you that core stuff.
If you want a pro controller, that's going to cost ya an additional $70.
Also, the Switch only has 32GB of internal memory, so sure as shit I would have to buy an external miscroSD. The Switch will reportedly only accept up to 128gb (and it is rumored it won't use external HDs so what the fuck Nintendo), so a quick cursory glance at Amazon, tells me that will run me another $40.

So before I even get around to buying a damn game, this is looking to run me $410. That isn't including any further internet services, or accessories or anything else.

To give you perspective... for that $410, you can right now buy a ps4 slim or X1-S and 3 or 4 $40 game for just about the same price, give or take $10-$20. And this of course, isn't even mentioning just getting a semi-decent gaming PC.

And for what? Zelda on the new console? Son, the difference between the Switch and the Wii U version is apparently 0.4gb. (Incidentally, the game is reportedly only 13gb... the Skyrim Super Shiny special edition they released in 2016 was 17gb. Take from that what you will.) So in other words, the difference in between the two games is probably a difference in load times and resolution (note though- it is being reported the switch version will only be at 900p, so it isn't going to be hitting the 1080p threshold if that's a thing for you).

After that, the only games of interest more me that appears to be coming out this year is Mario (holiday release), and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (TBA 2017). Maybe there are more titles announced that are of interest to you, but for me, spending close to $500 just for a Zelda game is a bit ridiculous.

And apologies for being a bit of a Debbie Downer. I've just done this dance with Nintendo before and I'm not gonna do it again.

It will sell about as much as the Wii U did. I also predict this will be Nintendo's last home console and will go the way Sega did. Calling it now!

Nintendo is worth 18.4 billion. They could operate without turning a profit for the next 50-100 years. I doubt they'd just bow out of the home console market if the Switch isn't a success. They literally have so much money they can afford failure after failure, it wouldn't put a dent in their net worth. Sega got out of hardware because they didn't want to go bankrupt.

While I'm going to agree with @RoboticRichardSimmons in that I believe Nintendo isn't going to be going away any time in the foreseeable future, I would also have to agree with you that this may be Nintendo's last home console before they finally go full portable. Their 3DS sales dwarf anything the WiiU ever made and their only real competition was the PS Vita and... do I even need to say any more?

The only other outlying competition Nintendo might've had would be the smartphone market, but considering how much of a juggernaut Pokemon Go was last summer, and how much they made from Super Mario Run, you can bet Nintendo is going to go where the money is.

Hell, even just look at the Switch. It's literally just a glorified tablet with two fun-sized controllers flanking it. The only thing that makes it more than the equivalent of an iPad or Kindle is the fact that the charging dock is connected to a TV screen.

So... are they going to go completely away from hardware? Doubtful. But I fully expect for them to be making their own gaming smart-devices before the end of the decade at this rate.

And I'd honestly be okay with this. Nintendo has had a huge success with portable systems since the Gameboy days. No other company has ever come close to that.

People said the same thing about Blackberry, in reality they ceased to exist after about five years. Nintendo is a publicly traded company who's founding family sold all of their stock in the past five years. They might want to remain in the console business but if turns into a proven money maker they will leave it. That said...

This isn't likely either. It took them something like 2-2.5 years to get the Switch together and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a rush job (imagine how much better it could have been with another three years of battery tech or a bigger default memory card.) The only way they'd have a game-phone thing set up is if they started working on it now.

Before this presentation I was seriously considering making this my first day of console purchase ever. As is? Probably going to wait until Mario and see how the system's future is looking then. It might actually have a much better first year than this presentation suggests though. I haven't fully given up on "Laura Kate"'s leaks and if they end up coming true they'd more than fill in the gaps this presentation left open in the launch line-up. Sucks about all the costs and limitations though.

You could at least pretend to know what the fuck you're talking about.

I never buy consoles at launch, and, while I'm excited for the Switch, it's definitely not an exception. Besides, I only have a tiny, 18.5" TV in my living room (and a borderline nonfunctional CRT TV that's older than I am), and I want to upgrade before buying any new consoles. In addition, I would like to actually buy a couch or something before I get a new TV, which would require me actually getting one of these full-time jobs I've been interviewing for (or me making a shitload of money from consulting this year, which I really don't anticipate until late summer at the earliest).

My only real concern is that, in attempting to create a hybrid console/portable, they may potentially make something that's underwhelming at both roles. I'm not exactly worried about it at this point, at least in terms of the Switch as a console, but this is one of those things we won't really know until launch.

The media aggregates, N4G (Anti GG Sperg basket) are having a fun time crying over the Switch's presentation so much you'd think it was Donald Trump Victory Salt.

I was in the group who felt Nintendo's handling of the Wii and Wii U were laughably pathetic, but this new hardware hasn't been given enough exposure to warrant nerd rage. It isn't exactly the most enticing thing either. It's different for sure and I like that it is unique compared to other consoles, but let's be real here I have a very vanilla opinion about what it has to offer right now.

With that all said, let's just put all our chips on Nintendo's E3. Then we can circle jerk about it.

Super Mario Odyssey looks beautiful and so does Breath of the Wild.

I wish people would stop being pessimistic with Nintendo.
As a company, they're fine. They're not going anywhere, this won't kill Nintendo. I'm just disgusted that their flagship title BoTW, can't even run at 30FPS+ and it's not even 1080p, it's 720p and they can't even get 60FPS. They can't even do draw distance right on this thing. I mean this seriously looks like a Gamecube/PS2 game. Even the PS2 could do 1080i, sure it was interlaced but at least it could do it. I feel about Nintendo with their games the same way I feel about DC and their movies, I don't want to hate these characters, I don't want to think it as a lesser product but it's hard to ignore the facts and just because I have nostalgia for Nintendo games and IPs doesn't mean they get a free pass. If Microsoft or Sony did this with one of their flagship titles people would crucify them, well it already happened with 343's Halo 5 Guardians. Nintendo shouldn't get a free pass.

I think some people are treating the Switch as if it was supposed to come out and be the PS4 Pro's direct competitor rather than what is essentially a Nintendo version of the Nvidia Shield. Have people seen how tiny it is?

I'm actually sort of pleased. If they can get Wii U level graphics on it and I can take it into various rooms and play it, then yeah, I'm sold.

Skyrim - A game released over 5 years ago should not be a reason to buy a console. It's not even the special edition. Once again, not a fucking launch title! Why Todd-san!?

According to reddit, Bethesda is doing this to test how much they can push the Shield and see if they want to release more games, they know is not going to sell but they can try stupid things with it

Zelda - The only launch title worth a shit, we didn't see anything other than voice acted scenes, no new gameplay to settle my gameplay fears. Still looks questionable graphically compared to what it could have been (2014 demo). Game looks choppy with FPS. No mention of Wii U version.

I was joking in IRC in how Nintendo wanted to appeal to the demographic that played The Witcher 3, then we got the trailer with Zelda taking a bath, people was calling me a prophet or a nintendo employee for that

The thing is that there are others company that confirmed they are making accessories for the switch, it would be a matter of time that some of them releases a more cheaper controller

And Nintendo corrected the Microsd thing, the Switch now supports 2 TB with SDXC, so you can download your waifu games from japan in peace

Oh thank God. For a minute I thought I would have to use Steam like a normie gaijin.

Here's the rub though - the key words is that it supports 2TB SDXC. The problem however is that those are not commercially available, and at present, the largest size you can get commercially is only 256GB, and that will set you back $200. However, a 128GB will only set you back $40 (Apparently whoever prices SDXC cards is a jackass).

It's better than a overpriced proprietary memory card, Nintendo learned from the demise of the Vita
