Ah, okay, so it was a moment of idiocy on my part. My bad.
And yeah, I've noticed. what is it with 'non-binary' women and makeup?
I really don’t know.
Nerdy girl fashion types:
-aggressively practical. She wears cargo pants from the men’s section. Her hair is long but unstyled—a braid, maybe. She’s not dressing like this to resist the patriarchy or something, she just doesn’t care that much. A formal outfit for her is a blouse and slacks.
-Emily Dickinson. Long, loose skirts and dresses. Light makeup occasionally, and she’ll try a 19th century bun for a special event. Real quote from one of these types: “I wore my shortest skirt—knee length.” Might own a corset, but it’ll always be worn correctly as underwear.
-Pin-up wannabe. This girl is insecure. She wears TARDIS dresses with push up bras, corsets on the outside, Fluevogs, and anything sold by ModCloth. She was rejected in high school and now she’s trying to be hot—but not like the other girls. Has a lot of tattoos. ‘This is what an angry feminist looks like.’
She’s also more likely to always be dressed like that. Emily Dickinson girl can be seen occasionally in leggings and a hoodie. Pin-up girl is committed to her look even when it’s inappropriate. She’s cool! She’s sexy!
Lot of consooming. The type to have a ‘nerdy wedding’ where the cake has Avengers characters on it. She needs to cling to her identity as a geek.
Being non-binary is ultimately about being insecure, especially in your sexual role. Aggressively practical girl and Emily Dickinson girl might also be insecure, but they don’t have the same burning desire to be seen as sexy.
Other people can feel free to disagree with me on any of this, of course.
edit: Also, pin-up girl wants to be part of the ‘queer community’ and if she’s straight, or bi but dating a man, this is a way to do it. There really isn’t any other space for women who behave in non conforming ways, and it’s a cycle because as more women become ‘enbies’ the rest feel they have to also. It’s also because gay people are, like, cool and edgy, and she really wants to be cool and edgy. Again, she’s not like other girls.
