I'm reading it now and might post about it in this thread when I am done. Not a full on book review or anything, but a few sentences. It's essentially a man explaining to women why they need to be wary around men, but it's an interesting read.

I did end up finishing this book, by the way. It's an interesting read but not life-changing. De Becker's advice basically boils down to "trust your gut when you have a bad feeling about a person or situation," with some explanation on the cues informing our subconscious to give us that uneasy feeling. The majority of the book is him diving into specific cases he's dealt with, divided by category: stalkers, angry ex-spouses, bitter ex-employees. He does victim blame some; he says that women in abusive relationships need to leave (true, as it never gets better), and says it's their fault if they don't leave (ignoring many of the factors keeping women in abusive relationships).

So in summary, it's fine.

A woman's intuition is the legacy of every single one of her female ancestors and the trials they lived through in the hope that her descendants would be better off. It's her great-great-great grandmother putting a hand on her shoulder and saying 'I don't like the look of him, dearie'. As de Becker says, intuition isn't perfect, but it always has your best interests at heart.

Moids fucking HATE female intuition, which alone is a sign it's priceless and should be held onto like it's the last thing you own.

He does, although I'm not sure it's necessarily a negative. As a man, he has less scope to critique a woman's actions and reactions, regardless of what learned expertise he has, so I also bristled at some of things he said.

That said, the libfem bullshit suggests that we are powerless and mere passengers in our own lives, and I think de Becker is trying to promote the idea that you DO have choices in almost any situation. I get it, there's a whole bunch of shit that makes leaving an abusive situation an insane proposition. But the antidote to that isn't insisting that women don't have a role in their own lives.

If you choose to stay in an abusive situation, that is a choice you're making. I can see a lot of reasons to do so; it's not a right or wrong decision. And no matter what she does, nothing will ever absolve her moid of his crimes and immorality. He is no less culpulable if she stays than if she leaves. But short of him physically forcing her, she has agency to make a choice based on her options.
In an abusive situation, her options are really really shit and unfair. But waxing lyrical about how things should be isn't going to change her life at that moment. She's in a shit situation and will have to make some sacrifices no matter what. If she leaves, she'll have to give up some things. If she stays, she'll be relinquishing other things.

There's no way to give a woman the freedom to make those decisions without also, by necessity, having her live through the consequences of those decisions. Consequences not as in punishment, but as in if you do A, B will happen, and if you do C, D will happen. There's no way to alter that reality. That's just how it is.

The libfem approach towards abuse is just as it is for trangenderism: say how you'd like things to be, and insist reality fits that. Any alternate is blasphemy. It's damaging, insulting, and attempts to create a framework of fantasy which is unworkable in real life.

De Becker is a man, so he has innate failings which come through in the book. But overall, he's saying things which aren't being said elsewhere, and for a moid, he's not the worst there is.
