Ohh, good catch, I didn't double check the book title. It is indeed just "Lolita" in Japanese. The Complex part from Lolicon comes from コンプレックス (Komplex) which they borrowed from German* to express a mental state that is not the norm. I think English uses it as well in stuff like Oedipus complex? *German has been for Japanese doctors what Latin was from Western doctors: you had to learn it during medicine because a lot of that is founded on books of that language. Japan borrowed most of its modern medicine from Germany during the Meiji era. If you visit an older doctor in Japan chances are his German is way better than his English.

Additionally, this reminds me of Twilight and the rash of similar romance novels (some being targeted at YA women, more recent others labeled as adult "spice") with extremely controlling and obsessive male leads, plus the "yandere!male character" fanfiction trend. I think this is a way women and teenage girls cope with lack of male sexual fidelity, not to mention the way men larp as The Protective Sex without ever intending to back that up. I can't stand how conversations about compensated dating/sugar babying/sugar daddying point the issue at the young women and teenage girls involved instead of the men. Every time I lurk a conversation about this or research the issue, the focus is on either "how much agency does the woman/girl have in this situation?" or "in some ways it eMpOwErS her" or "why does she make this choice?". As if the men aren't also making a choice. As if understanding and redirecting the female perspective is the only step. And sure, it's important to protect vulnerable women and girls, but what about ostracizing the gross old men that prey on them? Who figures them out? Who protects girls from them, and how?

99% of problems in society would be solved if justice systems held men accountable for their crimes, and gave the maximum penalty to male sex crimes. I'm barely exaggerating with that percentage. It should be so easy. And yet, so many social processes - even some conversations about women's issues and male-on-female abuse - start with the assumption that men (or a few men, enough men) are just a force of nature that runs roughshod over women's autonomy, and to focus on punishing them would be like punish a monsoon. So those processes become focused on how women change their lives in preparation for the monsoon, and not the very real choices those men have made or what kind of consequences they should get.

Sometimes I think feminists believe in male agency more than men themselves do, because giving men consequences for evil choices is acknowledging men choose their actions.

It is a multilayered, very well written novel, with very dark and dangerous undertones. At first layer it's about a vulnerable and amicable gentleman that accepts lodging from a woman named Charlotte Haze, who seems to quickly fall in love with him. At some point she gives him an ultimatum to marry her or move out. He marries her.

He writes horribly about her, though, calling her "the haze woman", "my fat wife" or the dismissive "lo's mother" in his writing.

She finds his writing one day, about his obsessive ideas about her 12 year old daughter. In many different ways he's been justifying why she is mature enough. The danger of the book is how persuasive he is to anyone who doesn't understand exactly what the things he describe means.

She angrily crying tells him she will expose him, runs outside, and tragically dies in a traffic accident, a truck that hits her.

Of course he's an unreliable narrator. He probably pushed her. It's all too convenient.

He becomes foster father to lola. Has, from his own twisted viewpoint, consensual sex with her. Tries to get the reader to see it that way. They go on a road trip, in part to get her away from her school and school boyfriend. He paints himself as a victim of her seduction and whimsy. He accuses her of being childish multiple times, which is a weird thing to accuse a child of.

One of the mildly redeeming features of the book is that instead of being fully committed to being pedophilia apologia, the young girl dolores (dolores = lola = lolita) responds more or less as you expect. Which is to say, she has the clear trauma build up of being abused and manages, in this case, to get away from him. I'm not sure that can be a plus in favor of the book, because I think without it, it wouldn't have been able to be sold in its time when it was written.

To answer your question, yes it really is that sleazy and the worst part is that it seems anything but sleazy on the surface. Like a gentleman's club usually being the least clean part of an entire city, sewer included.

I, yet again made the mistake of reading the news today. 13 years old boy stabbed an adult woman, out of a blue. He also had yelled (freely translated) "fucking whore, you're not walking here anymore". Thankfully the woman in question managed to get away, and is in therapy and afraid of going outside. When questioned why he did it, and what he think the victim felt he pretty much gave "I dunno" answers. Biggest point of said article is about how youth feels bad, how they're spending too much time using smartphones and whatnot. Worst part of this is that this is not first similar case of underage teens attacking someone (and one might think they don't pick bigger able bodied adult men).

Surely, this is the case of someone acting like a dog, and thus should be trained like a dog? Yes, I am mad, since this kid is just put on reform school for few years, while someone else carries physical and mental scars for this.

So many things were stacked in his favor. Having tons of evidence thrown out (including medical records) that supported Amber, Allowing Depp to bring multiple witnesses that were on his payroll. The jury being non-sequestered and being brainwashed by pro-Depp propaganda. The last thing alone was reason enough to declare this a mistrial and make any fair trial by jury impossible. Every time I look into this kangaroo court I find some more bullshit:

• Depp's team excluding Amber's medical records then accusing her in front of the jury that she never produced any
• Dr. Curry diagnosing Amber with BPD and HPD even though her scores were normal. Also none of Amber's therapists diagnosed her with those disorders.
• Unlike Dr. Hughes Dr. Curry is not specialised in Intimate partner violence
• Jurors fell asleep throughout trial (Archive)
• Wrong Juror Seated In Virginia Trial (Archive)
• Juror claiming the drugs the Depp took do not make someone violent (Archive)
• The same juror also said that the jury concluded that there was mutual abuse but still gave a guilty verdict because "Amber bad"
