Are the odds high that I can get a low impact role to be a retard in if I play the video game?
I found Cook very good for getting familiar with a lot of the basics.

Read those, set cook preference to high, janitor to low.
Janitor duty is also very basic, maybe good just for learning how to move, interact with objects, figure out how to find places in the station. It's almost too basic though, especially if the server is kind of dead when you log on.
Cook will give you a lot more to do with out being too overwhelmed. Even if no other player comes around you'll still have plenty to do making food and will take a while to burn through the initial kitchen stock.
You have to manage your inventory, work different machines, figure out oh to use items on each other, use items in hand (default key Z, took me a while beating myself with a directionial aid to learn that), look up recipes to make things, basic easy RPing by asking other players what they want to eat and seeing if you can make it, talking to players in other departments with the neighboring hydroponics for more food.
And if you fuck it up most players will subsist on vending machine junk food for long enough to make it to the destruction of the station anyways, so it's low pressure.
Edit: note this is my perception from a couple of days of learning the ropes, is any experienced players have corrections please add.
