OMG SHOGUN IS GETTING AN FX ADAPTATION

It’s going to get butchered somehow, no matter how good the book is, history of the past 10 years or so have shown that these people don’t care and will ruin whatever they want, to either make it “for a modern audience” or “put their creative spin on it”.

It’s also why I can’t understand people, especially here of all places being excited for a Blood Meridian movie to be made. But who knows I’d love to be proven wrong and Shogun is great and everything fans want it to be…. Just hope they don’t give it to a woman to work on lol.

episodes just went up on popular torrent sites, popped up in Trending
first 2 episodes so far, i am about to give it a watch when it finishes downloading
dont know anything about the original so i am going in blind

edit:
it has its share of drama because a lot has to be established with dialogue, and of course theres a weird sex scene
i am unsure of the music choice, seems like kind of modern synth music but i cant say that its bad, just wonder what a traditional soundtrack would have sounded like
the violence is well done, no samurais doing 50 flips and killing a million baddies
a christian Japanese dude tries to help the protagonist likely for christian reasons, he was asked to stop, he didnt and instead used the sign of the cross to bless him i guess
his head got chopped off

theres a pretty brutal torture scene where they boil a dude alive
so far i have been surprised by the production value, i cant speak for the CGI but everything else is impressive
im not sure if it remains true to the book you guys were mentioning, but it is giving me Marco Polo vibes

the Homer Simpson scene lol

i would recommend this so far, its good
after seeing the trailer and some scenes i was worried it would be some animu level shit but its actually very good

Just finished episode 1.

First scene - I enjoyed how they portrayed the captain-general as frail and useless - not because I particularly hated his character, but it's important to drive home that the pilots were the useful ones (who navigated). I'm not going to lie, I thought they were going to nerf Blackthorne, but so far, so good. Also enjoyed the second scene with the landing - Blackthorne still making an effort to struggle against their captors.

The scenes illustrating the captive status of Toranaga and introduction to the politics are well done. The pit scene portrayed Blackthorne accurately according to the book - smart and brave but with his share of foibles such as his pride and sense of decency. Omi was portrayed well too - yes, he did piss on Blackthorne in the book. The Portugese priest was great - his weeaboo grasp of Japanese is exquisite. Yabu's disgust with him is also exquisite.

I think their casting choice for Toranaga is excellent - warmth one moment, and detached civility the next. Oh shit, here comes the boiling scene. They better have Yabu's apology/confession later on. Now there's something I don't remember from the books going on with the courtesan and Yabu. I'm not a fan of the humor (HURR DURR NAKED, HURR DURR SHE SLAPS HIM AWAY), but it's tolerable. Great that they kept Yabu's treacherous nature (omitting the discovery of the ship by not telling Toranaga). The actor for Blackthorne is growing on me.

RODRIGUES! God I like this actor for him too! Business-like, jovial, and with an edge. The ship scene - 👨‍🍳💋And the same about Yabu starting to row (reminds me of the attack scene from "The Hunt for Red October" - "Get that thing off my ship!" "It's off!" except this is nonverbal from Yabu). The cliff scene was very, very good.

The Mariko scenes were good with explaining her past (at least, to a certain degree - don't want to give away the whole game though) and the mentality of Toranaga and his vassal lords. Really enjoyed the ending montage with the voiceover. I failed in my quest to get an audiobook version of the book, so I haven't read it or heard it in years, but I think it's extremely close to the book.

The producers and screenwriters know their audience. It's a really strong start. They didn't shy away from the gray morality of the political system.

You could've picked a better title for the thread, you autistic nigger.
Anyway, I've seen the first two episodes since they're on torrents and it looks promising. I liked what I saw, even if some props (guns and wardrobe) are from a different, later period.
Once all episodes are out, I'll definitely watch it, because fuck Netflix and fuck being a cuck who watches weekly shit.

I had never heard of this series prior to today but saw a single image which showed by boy Hiroyuki as a leading character so naturally I watched the first two episodes immediately.

Pleasantly surprised so far! I am scared to get so excited that we might have a great series on our hands just because of how common modern media fucks a up a good thing then takes a shit on its corpse.

With that said, can't wait to see more once the next wave of episodes hit my torrent site.

It did tickle me a little bit when they showed Osaka castle, it was one of my favourite places I visited in Japan, and seeing an interpretation of the grounds in its glory days was fun, since I spent quite a bit of my time there trying to imagine what it would have looked like back then.

When I first saw Cosmo Jarvis in the trailers he looked completly out of place. After watching the first two episodes I get why the producers cast him, his character is a pent up mixture of rage, cunning and curiosity.

I particularly liked the scene where Vasco produces the log books and hints at the trail of destruction Blackthorne and his crew laid before they washed ashore on Japan. The Jesuits instead of being 2d caricatures the same long term schemers that the are today. Toranaga is the real triumph though, a different character from the books, but his ability to think 5 steps ahead obvious.

What's really funny though is going on twitter and seeing people talk about the 'White Savior' narrative, and how the TV series is so much less problematic than the book. As if James Clavell didn't have extreme first hand experience with the Japanese.

Looks real promising from what i've seen, though i'll wait until every episode is out before raising the jolly roger. I recognized a good deal of scenes from the trailers, and i haven't been hyped for a series in years, so i have very fucking high hopes for this.

Lots of ringing endorsements. Thank you, gentlemen. I'm putting it on my to-read list.

I'd add Tai-Pan and Noble House as well. Gai-Jin too, although i haven't finished it yet. Hell, just read every book in order* if you like Shogun.

A note on adaptations: The Tai-Pan movie is very bad and should be avoided. The Noble House series is very condensed and very 80's, but i thought it was OK for what it was. Haven't seen the King Rat movie, though it seems to have received some very good reviews (but Clavell wasn't too happy).

More people should know of Clavell's works. He's one of few authors where i can open a book at pretty much any page and just read for hours.

* The proper order for reading the Asian Saga is Shogun -> Tai-Pan -> Gai-Jin -> King Rat -> Noble House -> Whirlwind

Watched the first episode and I am parthway through the second one.
So far, it is really damn good.
I read the book a few years ago and i recognize a lot of from it.
Great productions value and if there is one grip I have, is that they don't speak portugese which I understand why they used just english and japanse.

I finished the first two episodes the other night. The book is one of my favorite of all time so I was incredibly skeptical of there being a good adaptation, especially in this day and time. Also, reading a few early reviews where people complained of White Savior shit made me roll my eyes and made it obvious that those reviewers had no real experience with the source material.

Anyways, before watching, the biggest thing I had been hesitant about was Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne. After the first two episodes I can say I am quite happy with him so far. I think he's done a good job. The casting all around seems to be great, but I am especially pleased with Yabu. Dude seems right on point. Of course, Hiroyuki Saneda as Toranaga was always going to be perfect as well.

I will probably wait for a few more episodes to be released before I dive back in but as I've promised the wife that there is a bit of romance eventually in it I'm sure she will make me continue before the full series is released.

I read Shogun when in high school, absolutely phenomenal defo going to give this a shot, any good torrent site recommendations are appreciated.

couldn't handle any more than 30mins. basic AF
>character gives a gun to another character and comes out of the room. you hear the gunshot with the character 1 closeup
SO ANTIQUATED, it felt like I was in imperial japan
dont get me started on the seppuku scene leading to those 2 women talking. meh

I'm waiting until more episodes to come out, but it seems like they "modified" the scene I loved in the book.

During a sit-down with THR, showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks addressed the possibility of a sophomore effort for Shogun since it’s billed as a limited series.

When asked about a second season, Marks explained that the duo’s love for how the Clavell novel ended informed their Season 1 conclusion. “We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place.”
