OMG SHOGUN IS GETTING AN FX ADAPTATION

This is legitimately the best show I've seen in ages. It's not perfect but it's refreshing to see characters that have their own motivations and are mostly written intelligently and an all Japanese cast that speaks Japanese in Japan. Cosmo Jarvis was a major wtf casting at first but he's grown on me a lot too.

I'm very nostalgic for the novel and the original series so i knew I was going to be extra critical of the FX series but I've been enjoying it a lot. Cosmo Jarvis was a weird pick but he's managed to fill some huge shoes in this role and has done very well.

Having just watched the first episode, it's a reccomend from me so far but I can't help thinking that the (correct) decision to have all the Japanese dialogue subtitled rather than dubbed/spoken in English is going to hurt it's reach
Hulu has a dubbed version.

Good show so far. I barely remember the 80s version except that I liked watching it with my grandpa.

Is there any benefit to reading King Rat and Tai-Pan (published first) before Shogun? Alternatively, what's the argument for publishing order versus chronological order?

Just watched the first episode. The trailer looked dogshit to me but damn, it's good! I like the story so far, Blackthorne is cool, Rodrigues is cool, who i didn't even recognize as Nestor Carbonell under all that beard but what completely sold me was when i realized, yes, that is really Tadanobu Asano as Yabu! Man got old! Loved the ship scene, loved the scene entering Osaka port and i am usually not big into anything with this much CGI. I hope the quality stays this high, about to start watching the second episode. Can't even remember when a first episode of a show impressed me this much.

Yeah Poundland Tom Hardy is doing a good job I must say. I watched the first 2 episodes and am going to wait til it is done to finish it, which is basically May. Never read the book or watches the old series (although I'm old enough to remember it being around), so nothing really to compare it to.

Refreshingly good writing, acting, decent enough production value (although the city shots look like something out of Total War 2 cutscenes) and lack of niggers.

The girlboss assassin with the knife that makes necks explode in the second episode was hilariously stupid. It was so goofy, I assume it was an attempt at wokeness, because only a moron would consider it "bad-ass," especially when she slaughters everything in her wake until she runs into any character with a name.

Also I totally don't get why they need to keep discount Tom Hardy alive when they already have his book, but it's just another thing I don't care too much about since the stuff actually happening is pretty good.

Who is the best character in Shogun and why is it Yabushige?

Ok, this is WAY better than I expected. It has some departures from the novel, inevitably, but if you'd never read it and were coming to the TV series with no preconceptions, you would love it. The sets, the costumes, the props... incredible.
The acting is great and I'm so glad they went with Japanese people speaking Japanese. Hiroyuki Sanada is incredible but the absolute standout is actress Anna Sawai. I have never, ever seen anyone take on a role so perfectly. I have read that novel many times and Anna's portrayal of Mariko is literally the book brought to life.
Also, the scene at the teahouse is one of the most powerful, poignant, tender, well acted and well shot pieces of film I have seen. I had to rewind it several times.

This show is fucking fantastic. No modern bullshit, just great performances, set design, and production.

I think this is hands down the best work of television this decade so far.

Can't wait to see how the awards show fucks them for having the wrong kind of diversity though.

My favourite of the male cast, but I have to say it sends me absolutely reeling every time it's a full body shot of him and he's actually pretty fit/slim for a man of his age.

He just has such lovable tubby guy energy.

Not to be confused with Kroger Tom Hardy: Logan Marshall-Green. I was happy Logan was getting such a good role until I looked at the cast list & saw it was Cosmo Jarvis.

This series shames Hollywood, I expect to see hitpieces on it from the usual suspects.

They will fuck it up. Guaranteed.
They did not, much to my very great surprise.
I'm waiting until more episodes to come out, but it seems like they "modified" the scene I loved in the book.

Yeah, that was one of my favourite scenes too and I was disappointed they didn't do it verbatim.

Anyway, minor irks notwithstanding, this show absolutely smokes anything I've seen in years.

I watched about half and yeah it wasn't a trainwreck but it was kind of pointless and at best just made me want to read the book. So congratulations Hollywood I guess, that's a win.
