I want to agree, but I feel like they'd keep in a proper Cory spergout since his rage moments always do well with a section of the viewer base. That french dip arguments is one of the most popular bits with the subhuman scum who like Cory for a reason.
That and they already said it was delayed due to copyright claim bullshit, so unless Cory perfectly sang a song that got detected I don't think we can blame him for this one

Cory's crash outs are funny because the other members are there to immediately call him out or fan the flame to get him more angry. If he was doing it alone and debating with youtube or twitch chat, then it would suck

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this as there's both Smiling Friends and Oney/Sleepycabin-related content in it but I figured the Oney stuff was more significant. A couple weeks ago, several Newgrounds artists put together a zine and a fair bit of it is dedicated to mocking Chris and his general sphere of people.

Here's some choice cuts:
You can peruse the whole thing here: https://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/pjorg/newgrounds-zeen-issue-001

Reading through this, it comes off as extremely bitter and angry that Chris and Zach are more well known than what the individuals involved with this were making under the thin veil of satire.
I love that the guy who hosted this literally outright admits he wants a show and then hosts a zine all about how shitty it is that so many animators fish to get shows

also also there's a veronica and ls mark comic there, so it's not even the newgrounds zeene it's the "e-celebs who im obsessed with because of their success" zeen

chris changed his steam profile pic lol

The attempt at gotcha-ing Pim's design in that it "doesnt make proper use of perspective and volume" just misunderstands character design. I mean, NeoNewgrounds people trying to tell those influenced by John K to work more on model is ridiculous in itself, but Pim literally has anatomically larger eyes. It's not a perspective thing, one of his eyes is just bigger than the other. In real life some people have hands or ears or feet that look bigger than the other noticeably even when further away and especially in cartoons this is commonly used. In fact the drawing the person makes literally looks exactly like something the Genie does in Aladdin where one of his eyes gets bigger and juts out to look at something. This is a very common trope. Cartoon characters can have weird anatomy that's internally consistent: Mickey Mouse and Sonic have a conjoined eye, many characters don't look at eachother directly and instead face three quarters to the side because that's where their model is and in animation language characters will do things like pick up items with two fingers instead of a full fist so the pose is readable. the only cheating is that charlie's eyes are always on one end and pim's larger eye is always behind him instead of picking for example the left eye and having when he switches to his left side it becomes closer to the camera, but that's an incredibly common trick in cartoons and especially sprites

This also just misunderstands what the design of Pim is trying to convey about his character: the bigger eye is on the outside of his head so his silhouette is immediately readable as two balls and a string at the top, if you made his closer eye the bigger one you wouldn't be able to read his silhouette as well, and having the big eye be the one that's closest to the edge of the head means you can read eye and mouth expressions without needing to pay attention to the back half of his head, where typically other characters WONT be behind him. this also conveys to the audience that the character is a wide eyed idealist, but without making the character so bug-eyed he stops being cute. it also conveys that the character is not particularly young, as we often associate massive eyes with childish characters. you make the larger eye closer and those kinds of expressions tend to bring to mind madness or shiftiness

It's amazing for someone to try to rulesfag Zach and Michael, who like it or lump it are experts at understanding what animation can be used to deliver a joke, by literally not understanding why a character looks the way he does and instead just thinking they "drew bad because they're lazy". hell the toons these guys worked on employ similar techniques and have HORRIBLE use of perspective:
1762398366186.png 1762398374259.png 1762398383663.png 1762398396978.png 1762398405928.png
why is this woman's rightward cheek jutting out? it's further away after all. why are her eyes and nose placed on her right cheek? To make the character's expressions readable doofus!

this is the same thing with the brian and charlie page, that having a specific pose is what makes family guy "badly animated" - which isnt even true anymore there's a noticeable bump in the animation, but with smiling friends i notice every episode a new pose and perspective having to be drawn for the characters and how zach and michael talk about putting all that into a database so they have reference for what all these poses should look like for the future. you just see a lot more unique drawings in smiling friends than in family guy. to me this starts to come off as people who got into newgrounds via zach and chris who now are like "dude I thought you guys were different man!" and taking all their criticisms of family guy and such as gospel. It's this weird oedipus complex

1762397197472.png
I mean, as said before: comparing smiling friends to family guy and then literally doing the family guy cutaway with quagmire killing the simpsons

Like the criticism of weird cartoon character designs and furrybait is so hypocritical coming from the ratbasterds and bridge kids people. It's so stupid, but I like again that their idea of OG Newgrounds is 2007 (before all of the people here started the site) but also that it was better because they gave genuine critique to a bouncy ball animation, unlike now where they glaze the furry bait... but like, of course the fully drawn, fully animated, fully colored cartoon would get MORE praise. Is the idea that objectively superior things are unworthy of praise because bad media got critiqued almost 20 years ago?

And i did some looking and literally none of the people who worked on this comic had joined the site prior to 2008 - in fact, half of them joined 2012, 2020 and as recently as 2023!! Say what you will about Zach and Oney "abandoning Newgrounds", they can reference obscure shit they were watching pre-9/11. These guys are all zoomers and millennials who watched the Awesome series on youtube and then found the site through there. Or, god forbid, from fucking Animated James. These are people who copied Zach, Ego and Chris' work and are now acting like their heroes betrayed them. These aren't OG Newgrounders, they're Trannygrounds. Notice the zero negative mentions of JohnnyUtah's BLM cartoon or FNF making 2 million on kickstarter for a game that still isn't finished? No, because they're NeoNewgrounds who want to be seen as the slayers of the sellouts. They think they're Alan Moore calling Chris Claremont a hack

This is completely evident by how many times Smiling Friends and LS Mark are referenced. These things aren't Newgrounds, the people making this claim they aren't Newgrounds, but they know and care more about these things and are in circles where they're referenced more often than anything Newgrounds so this becomes the Smiling Friends magazine. Hence they don't even know FNF is more popular than Smiling Friends, both offsite and on the site, because they don't really go on Newgrounds they watch it all on youtube and on youtube for zoomers and millennials that's what you're gonna get recommended

The funniest thing is that the Oneyboys are literally ALWAYS praising Newgrounds and Tom Fulp and saying that without both they would basically be a bunch of nobodies AND by the looks of it Chris has been doing his episodes from the Newgrounds office so yeah this whole "They abandoned Newgrounds" is a bunch of bullshit from a bunch of butthurt little vermin.

It is crazy how hilarious their bitterness is towards the NG alums who actually became successful. Outside of the Bridge Kids guy I have never heard of a single one of them. The rebellious spirit of Newgrounds has apparently been usurped by jealous pretentious people who really have no connection at all as to what made it so important back in the day and would probably get seethingly offended by 3/4ths of it's content. It's also just funny how Oney, Zach and their older NG friends are extremely close to Tom, with Zach getting him on national TV with a Smiling Friends cameo and Chris constantly going to the office and hanging out with Cory and especially Dave, who is a more new-school Newgrounds guy. I feel like Dave would probably call them faggots if they said how they really felt without the ironic framing of the zeen. It reminds me of ol' UkinoJoe and his jealousy - but he was actually a real prime Newgrounds user who actually made good stuff in the past, so that just puts them even lower on the totem pole than him. They're not even crabs in a bucket mad others are succeding - they were never even in the same bucket to begin with. In the end Chris & Zach posses a sepcial trait these guys never will - they are actully funny.

I can get behind them calling out the fact that a lot of modern animation is nothing but softcore gooner-bait, and the Web 3.0 denizens that inhabit the internet nowadays will just eat that shit up when a decade and a half ago it was being properly called out on sites like Newgrounds. However, if any of these bitter bastards actually got their wish of such a glorious return to the OG site culture that they "totally were around for", then they would also be the first ones to cry or complain about the fact that people were properly criticizing their own amateurish animations. Just go and give a proper 2007-style critique on one of their videos to see them either ignore it, brush it aside with a joke, or seethe about your comment.

As you said in the follow-up paragraph, they're just a bunch of Newgens who think that having a rabid "starving artist" mentality will be able to compensate for the fact that they weren't there during the site's golden age. One that they are trying to work themselves to being the new "ruling caste" of, since they posit themselves as the "real full-time animators" and not the verboten "sell-outs" that left the site for Hollywood or whatever cope narrative they've concocted for themselves to see themselves as "True newgrounders" despite having been born after the 2008 recession.

That's why I just don't get this sudden group bemoaning from these idiots who probably owe 80% of their influence to Oney, Zack, or Harry. Smiling Friends and, by extension, Zack and Crew's success wasn't due to nepotism of any kind; no, he worked in the animator mines for decades before getting any sort of recognition outside or even within Newgrounds. It's like they forgot the fact that the first time he made and pitched a pilot to Adult Swim that it failed (Hellbenders), and it would take him an entire decade to even get another shot at pitching a show that wasn't at all guaranteed to succeed. His humor could have very well not resonated with audiences again, but thankfully, it did succeed, and now, by the sweat of his own brow, it's a big success. A huge chunk of the OG crew from Newgrounds is in the industry, has made their own studio now (ZAM), and is poised to help others similar to them get their stuff on the air or jobs in the animation industry. There's never been a better time for these people, but no.

Instead of being happy for all of them, the ones who actually helped build the site that they're currently using or seeing the new opportunities being made available to Newground animatiors by those same people, they just delved into the deepest reaches of the bucket where not even the lowliest of crabs would venture and just cope over the fact that it wasn't THEIR success, cause that's what this is all about. It wasn't THEM who got the show and all this attention. Since that "starving artist" mentality would go completely out the door if they got offered even half of what Zack did with merch out the door day one. It's all a way to hide their spiteful jealousy under the pretext of 'artistic integrity' when anyone can tell where all this vitriol is coming from. Get over yourselves and kill that ego, you arrogant gaggle of Newgens.

Honestly, they should just be left in their "Cool Kids Club" to cope, seethe, dilate, and make a million other snide remarks cause they have an envy addiction. They'll either burn down into a cinder seeing Smiling Friends and the "sell-outs" continually succeed cause of the fruits of their own labours, or maybe one day grow up out of that teenager mentality so that they can keep making art without that chip on that shoulder to ruin any potential they may have had. Either way, it won't change the fact that Zack won in every regard and is living his well-earned dream of being the creator of probably the best, most culturally impactful, and organically successful modern adult animated show of the current decade.

Even back in '08 you had hater groups like the ones that made a collab about how much Brawl Taunts sucks. They were right but the collab was mostly seething. Ukinojoe was a part of it.

hell the toons these guys worked on employ similar techniques and have HORRIBLE use of perspective:
This just looks like low effort Meat Canyon "normie gross" design, where you draw monstrosities that are barely animated because the grossness of their model does the heavy lifting. For it to work well there has to be a lot of other stuff that goes right - it has to be funny at minimum, and the story has to be more than merely "Gross characters talk to each other about weird shit in weird ways". The primary reason that art style works is because people don't see disgusting shit constantly and it's shocking when they do, but now you can go on social media and find any number of human monstrosities who CHOOSE to be as disgusting as they can be to be as queer as they can be. It's lost its shock value almost entirely, and you are just left with watching something that isn't visually pleasing in the least.

The first artist who painted with their own shit was avant-garde. Everyone doing it afterwards was a disgusting faggot who copied a "real" artist.

Dude that made that zine seems like a bitter bitch.
