We should have moved in a direction that has your system scan all your files and build a database of their contents? Yeah no
If you're thinking because "le mossad", this isn't a good argument.
Tons of computers run databases. Your phone apps most likely use sqlite for a few things because it's small and easily embedded.
Organization of files is a good thing and makes applications like krunner for example more performant.

However bad KDE might be, its primary competition is Gnome.

That's all I'm sayin'.
The other competition is COSMIC, which might get good in 2.0.
That being said, i don't like Jeremy soller either.

I would use something like hyprland, but I don't like tiling window managers, I have a config ready, I just really like complete desktops like KDE.

Just use the thing you like without caring about the developers or upstream. If you need to interact make an alt account or something under some pseudo handle no one knows.

What do you think a journaled file system is?
Not an index of your files' contents..?

nigger how do you think a file system works
A (journaling) file system does not read the contents of your files and build an index from that.

Yes, yes. Anyway, in case you also managed to miss it, I am talking about the scanning of all your files' contents = I don't want that. I'm surprised this thread is so combative and (judging by the first three replies) clueless.

You guys don't remember semantic desktop
I sure do. Fucking nepomuk.

The basic idea is sound, but the solutions people come up with are always hacks on top of hacks on top of a regular filesystem, when it should be something implemented in the underlying file system itself that services can poke onto. MS came pretty close, with the database-as-filesystem concept in Longhorn, but that got thrown out with everything else when they rebased onto Server 2003.

Also I swear kiwifarms used to auto-merge posts to get around the awkward multi-quote implementation
That was a feature called @Trombonista, but it was retired a few months back.

Search for "Unwatch" and click the button.
I mean mentions sorry

Did they really do all that merging manually? Should've been paid

What makes you say this? I think it sounds like an awful idea even without performance issues. Perhaps it could have worked if it was first shilled today with a local llm implementation. I'd still rip it out

You said you were leaving this thread.

GTFO already, retard.

I honestly don't understand how filesystems are such unmitigated crap in the Year of Our Lord 2026.
Few people want to work on something that's technical, dry, OS-specific, nukes your data if you make a mistake, and will be adopted by nobody for ages because of #4. Remember how long it took for ext4 to be adopted? Compression is in a similar boat, but that at least has mega corporations willing to spend money on 5% improvements.

Yes i know what you meant, I know how these systems work
I know what things like baloo do. And how they improve the performance of applications like krunner.

I know that for example it might grab picture metadata and then said metadata can be used for all sorts of things. Including and not limited to krunner.
You can turn it off but you're just making your experience worse.

Nigger you need to calm down, this is the Kiwi Farms. Every thread is filled with retards, your expectation for others' conduct/patience/accuracy is unreasonable. Make your point and fuck off, you're not going to get a professional response by running your mouth. Doesn't matter if you're right.

Update: Xe/Xir is dissatisfied and now attempting to leave the site (alt post in sharty thread)
Today i will probably be leaving Kiwifarms in its entirety because i have not been using this site for extended period of time, Ive been here for about a year and i have never been more "honored" (if you can call it that) to be apart of one of the most retarded "right wing" spergautist fandom kiddie collection of websites on the internet and the world, Never would i have thought that at times i would be somewhat sympathizing with degenerates because the "morally uprighteous" (they dont believe a word they say btw) are just that annoying that it causes your inner contrarian to come out, When i used to be a bit of a leftist i would hang around left wing communities online and boy does Kiwifarms really emulate that, How long? Too long, i feel like its been in the gutter for its whole existence but it was good at some point because it was alot more niche and less people during the very start of the forum, Those people were dedicated to i dont know Content creation? Wasn't that the whole point of the site? How did we get here? You cant really pinpoint it on one thing alone but it alot of things, The drama that happens here is alot like highschool politics or whatever, same type of immature faggotry, Namefags here talk big game about eatchother but if they met in real life they would be to pussy to even fight eatchother, Not even a single punch thrown, They are pariahed martyed and turned into saints, Held up to the highest standard or treated like antichrist figures when in reality they are all the same type of troglodyte that should be shot or taken to counseling, You'll have people lecture you about morals when in reality its them just projecting their fucked fetishes onto you, Not because they are trying to grift but because its the sites culture where you have to fall in line with that making conversations about certain topics damn near immpossible because youll have somebody pedojackting you like what they do to everybody else, The humor is dead and when it comes to the political stuff i have found them mocking people who do things in real life because they arent in the same misirible space as them and they internally know they will never be able to do things that, Youll see them go after other people on the online right (mainly dissident) not because they have actual critiques but because they arent the same type of nihilist retard as them and they are more accomplished and not as sad as them, They have purity spiraled about everything so damn hard that the whole world is a complete us versus them that they see everybody else as a sickness to be dealt with when it reality its them, I should remind myself that the farms is still semi niche so for alot of people if i told somebody on this side of the right or whatever about the 'farms they would possibly be like "oh its the guys who stalk people online", Sure its more than that but thats all it will hopefully be remembered for, The guys who made the soyboy wojak internet memes, in the future they wont be remembered for being moral crusaders or epicliy 'aped the fewdist failtral peydofails or the only sane guys on the right because "everybody that doesn't use our gay little website is a fuggen normie", They might be remebered for goongate because that was pretty big but idk about that, And now we get to the circle jerk threads, A&N is full of moral grifters, TSIC is full of faggots, USPG2 is full of insane accelrationsts and other batshit crazy heckkin choods and like 3 cool people, The Shiwi is kinda cool (just kinda) and the shiwi is probably the only good thread but even we have some flaws, And BP couldnt withstand the power of the cultural transformation the farms went under when they decided being trans was LE BAD! and had their image destroyed and brown people and this site as a whole, and QA was probably cool at somepoint, And then we have the 5452524billionmilliontrillion other threads that nobody cares about, This web of threads is a complete mess and i hope whenever the farms shuts down the twitter brain niggers go along with it, Soyboywoahjaques go trough the same fate of every other internet meme and become widely accepted (like they pretty much have) These websites are forgotten and we all move on and everybody lives happily every after, in the mean time i am gone, Using this website damaged my psyche and i did something i probably shouldn't have and i am going to turn my gems folder into an archive, Never to download anymore, Oh yeah i should probably bring up Onionfarms because they probably going to turn that into a successor site and they may drag it only for as long as they have dragged KF as long they have, Where it will probably get worse and more degenerate untill i dont know it becomes another skibidifarms sitiuiantion, However it will probably get more niche as more people just move on like what i am doing, if you are wondering who i am, i am the shiwiGOD who made Estonian news and low effort post on the shiwi and then i left because an unlovable self righteous vantablack "coloured" mutt from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics named bart simpson runied it and then i came here and made the EEPG and some other things and then i slowly gave up on the Kiwifarms, That is my portfolio and i will contribute no less and no more, Goodybye
Double update: I am UNDER ATTACK for taking xe/xir too seriously. Thankfully it was a joke, we will continue to be blessed with xir's presence.
I'd like to let you all know that kiwi tards took that long ass message I just copy pasted from @The Mighty Bundu 's shitpost seriously

I mean, that's basically what a filesystem is already.
To clarify, the point is a FLAT filesystem. It's more transparent and needs less infrastructure: no sql client, no (additional) always-on background services, no vendor/application-specific access methods. It tends to work across Operating Systems via standard tools (if drivers permit) without even trying.
semantic desktop is cool and the direction computers should have moved in instead of gay touch devices that don't even let you see the filesystem.
iOS used semantic desktop concepts to abstract from the underlying filesystem. The "Files" app presents folders and textfiles which are all just database entries.

Application-specific databases are reasonable.

But whenever I want to search from the start menu, I want to launch programs 99% of the time.
I don't need krunner to freeze the start menu and spool-up mysqld to first present me unrelated files, downloads, browser history and only after 5 seconds decides to unfreeze and select the actual program I wanted. That's similar to Windows 11. A find /usr/share/applications/ -iname "*query*.desktop" as the same search is near instant.

Low-end hardware exists, especially in the FOSS world; and additional heavy point-of-failures should better be opt-in.
A small, non-persistent recent-items cache helps, but replacing filesystem search with a whole mysql instance is overkill.
If KDE (and GNOME) leaned more on the underlying OS instead of reinventing the wheel, they'd free up manpower to improve stability and portability.

More moving parts doesn't make things more managable.
You said you were leaving this thread.

It would help if your didn't create a new notification with your quoting, unless you're muted.
How do I turn off notifications from this thread
Sorry for roping you into this. Didn't expect the thread to blow up.

I like to explore the extremes of positions I consider, and the file system can be considered an unhappy medium. Forths usually have no file system, and instead expose a block abstraction. It's hard to call that heavyweight, but a file system is certainly heavyweight in comparison. There are plenty of papers, including one by the SQLite guys, showing how databases can be faster. This wouldn't be possible were the file system truly lightweight, but such is possible because it's not.

The UNIX file systems are really rather pathetic. Surely I'm not the only one here who has had issues with directories containing mere thousands of files. I've got a supercomputer with such shitty software that it can't handle millions of files in a directory without choking. There are plenty of websites I've seen where this bleeds into the URL structure, because the operators split a single large directory into many smaller, and use such stupid pathnames directly instead of rewriting them in any way:
Code:
1234567890__long_filename_structure.type => 12/34/56/78/1234567890__long_filename_structure.type
It tends to work across Operating Systems via standard tools (if drivers permit) without even trying.
This is just a way of saying it works where it works. I couldn't care less about compatibility with DOS, yet that's what we've got to a degree.
iOS used semantic desktop concepts to abstract from the underlying filesystem. The "Files" app presents folders and textfiles which are all just database entries.
Cue Rob Pike's pathetic thoughts on this matter:
Rob Pike lacks imagination.png
Here we've got someone who can't imagine a computer without a file system, and a really bad one at that. This is just like the time he bitched and moaned about a stupid hack involving an empty file—the true program was an empty file on some systems, which happened to produce the desired result—and how it no longer worked after it was documented. Typeless files suck in the same way stateless protocols suck, they deny reality: Files clearly have types, and certain protocols clearly have state, so designing without these in mind produces worse results. Anyway, I love how Multics did all of this and more better, but he only speaks about UNIX here.
Rob Pike said:
You can't grep a spreadsheet or put a PDF into your Photos app
UNIX weenies always use the example of grep. They masturbate over grep. BurntSushi is a celebrity in the Rust world for writing a grep, but in Rust. They're obsessed with this utterly unimpressive program, it's pathetic. Castrate them, that is turn them into eunuchs, and the first thing they'll do after the screaming is grep for their balls.
Application-specific databases are reasonable.
Yes, and when something is reasonable for one program, perhaps a generalization would be good for more programs. Consider the sentence "Application-specific file systems are reasonable." as an argument against a file system provided in the operating system. That seems silly, right?

I love the idea of tiling window managers like hyprland because they scratch that early 2000s "im in" stereotype, but any time i look into them, all the configuration and not having a "start menu" is a massive turn off that not even the visual appeal of being able to live out the dream of being an early 2000s hacker can fix.

and not having a "start menu"
I've gotten so used to not having one that having a Windows start menu feels foreign to me. I've used MacOS and Gnome/Hyprland for way too long that I hold Super + Holding LMB on windows to shift them around and then get confused when it doesn't work on Windows itself.

what i mean is shit like this looks cool
1790323091549.png
but i want an "application bar/start menu/place to easily access my applications" I can happily jive with the osx UI
1790323197209.png

because it provides me a visual location where all my applications are stored and i can open open them without needing to remember what the binary is named or making sure its on my path.
