Oscars 2023

Any particular reason for it? Saw a trailer and read a plot synopsis and it seems so boring. Like they couldn't scare away the normies so everything had to be portrayed through a ridiculously mundane lense.
What's the point of multiverse conflicts if everything just looks like California and the conflict is about being sad because divorce, taxes, and my ugly fat daugther is gay?

I took one look at the story and immediately knew it wasn't for me. I don't get it either.
It’s more creative with its multiverse stuff than the MCU, though that’s not saying too much.

The interesting thing about this Oscars is that somehow Jimmy Kimmel managed to make himself less interesting when compared to the actual winners like Brendan Fraser and Ke-Huy Quan

No joke, these were just some of the trending ”jokes” that came out of this years’ telecast:

It was one of those moments where one had to question that if he were the host making jokes, did anyone actually hear them?

Stuff like this made me wish the ghost of Johnny Carson hosted this instead of him.
Hey, those jokes are (kinda) good roasts. Maybe, in the hands of a competent comedian/showman, they would've been funny.

Of course, the host should have been Ricky Gervais. But, yes, the Academy is spineless.

I liked this year. Most of the awards went to deserving people, there wasn’t too much politisperging and they just presented the ceremony without desperately trying to pander to a wide audience for ratings as they have the last few years. The only part that pissed me off was the Little Mermaid trailer plug, don’t care about the movie but it was just gross to give Disney its own commercial spot within the show (they own the broadcast rights to the Oscars so I ain’t surprised though)

Honestly the awards were mostly deserving this year which I haven't felt since 2019.

I do think RRR was robbed, and best supporting actress went to the most undeserving person there. Not to mention the trailer for Little Mermaid was shit so hate that it was there.

In terms of RRR should have had more nominations?

@Scarlett Johansson is going to punch walls while calmly drinking wine when she finds out about this.

Stephanie Hsu acted her fucking ass off in that role. (In all seriousness look up her audition tape) I'm sorry but it's just ridiculous.

The main problem is that JLC is such a nonentity in the film. Literally the entire climax of the original Halloween is something she should have won for.

She's been very attention whorey this season. Like holy shit let Michelle, Ke, Stephanie, and James bask in the spotlight. She should have just sat there and ate her food.

I am laughing at Angela Bassett's reaction though. This, like JLC, would be her make-up Oscar. But Wakanda Forever was trite shit and not her best performance.

Anyway I lost it when I saw this:

I'm not crying you are.

OK, so, Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan are officially back.

Now we need Rick Moranis to return.

*cough*
Shelley Duvall too

Not to mention JLC was not even that good in the movie and overstayed her welcome within the film. Like she felt like a glorified cameo.

Well, Fraser won.

He went from alimony memes to Best Actor.
I'm so happy!! Fraser fucking did it. He made a comeback and the internet memes died last night. God bless you Fraser. Your win makes me happy about the Oscars for once!!

I'm so happy those two have returned in awesome ways to imagine. Rick Moranis would just be the cherry on the top for all of this.

I know it's old news but I just want to remind everyone again Will Smith slapping Chris Rock is the shit Hollywood doesn't want the Oscars to be. Having Brendan and Quan be on the verge of tears as they accept their awards is what this propaganda campaign is made for and people are way more likely to see both "The Whale" and "Everything..." as a result of these Oscars.

They don't even care if they don't get ratings anymore, we live in an era where even Grandma and Grandpa can tune to a streaming service, why the hell does any adult who is not in Hollywood watch The Oscars. It's the snippets of video that have spread on social media that makes film producers wildly seek out Oscar wins.

Yeah yeah, prices and awards, now what I really care about. Did the viewership take another dive this year or did the Will Smith stent end up causing more people to pay attention?

I guess I’m going to be the odd one out and say that not only did Jamie Lee Curtis deserve her Oscar, she was unquestionably the best performance in the movie.

Overall, I’m happy with the results although Banshees of Inisherin was robbed of Best Screenplay.

Fuck it, might as well give my quick thoughts on all the winners:

Actor in a Leading Role - Brendan Fraser
A stacked field this year. Happy for him and it was well deserved.

Actor in a Supporting Role - Ke Huy Quan
He’s good in the movie and does a lot of subtle things with his body language. But Barry Keoghan was miles better and deserved to win and this was clearly a sympathy vote first and foremost.

Actress in a Leading Role - Michelle Yeoh
Meh. It was a very weak year for female performances, but Michelle Yeoh was a fine pick. I did root for Cate Blanchett, though. Mainly for the incredible and complex physicality of her performance.

Actress in a Supporting Role - Jamie Lee Curtis
The only truly stand out performance from EEAAO. Great physicality and line delivery. Well deserved.

Animated Feature - Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
I would have preffered Puss in Boots, but this was a predictable choice. Great animation, design and voice performances. Special shoutout to Gregory Mann as Pinocchio.

Cinematography - All Quiet on the Western Front
Well deserved. It was either this or Tár.

Costume Design - Black Panther 2
Weak field this year. Black Panther was the rightful winner, but Avatar 2 was snubbed a nomination.

Directing - EEAAO
Probably the most deserved out of the nominees. Either this or Spielberg.

Documentary - Navalny
No surprises that the anti-Putin doc won. Didn’t see it so can’t comment on whether it deserved it or not but it really feels like a political choice more than a choice based on the objective merits of the film. But that’s the Oscars, right?

Editing - EEAAO
Very stacked field this year and all the nominees except Elvis were well deserved, imo. But I was rooting for Top Gun.

International Feature Film - All Quiet on the Western Front
Zero surprises and also well deserved.

Makeup and Hairstyling - The Whale
Incredibly stacked field this year. Every nominee was a worthy winner.

Original Score - All Quiet on the Western Front
Well deserved. Wouldn’t surprise me if it will become iconic in the future and be used in all sorts of different contexts, like the Pirates of the Carribean and Requiem for a Dream scores.

Best Song - Naatu Naatu
The only fun and catchy song this year where everything else was slow ballads. Also shoutout to the biggest nominations snub of the ceremony: The Captain Crow sea shanty from The Sea Beast. It’s still stuck in my head months after I saw the film.

Production Design - All Quiet on the Western Front
Not unhappy, all the nominees were well deserved. But I think Avatar deserved it the most.

Animated Short - The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
I loved this one! It’s pure wholesomeness, like a warm blanket around your soul. And the animation is absolutely beautiful!

Sound - All Quiet on the Western Front
Well deserved. Although I think Batman deserved it more.

Visual Effects - Avatar
No surprises and well deserved. Would have been an outrage if it didn’t win.

Adapted Screenplay - Women Talking
Well deserved. The best thing about the film is the dialogue and the competition was relatively weak this year.

Original Screenplay - EEAAO
Ridiculous. Banshees of Inisherin was robbed.

Best Picture - EEAAO
No surprises. Not my favourite but it’s very good and I’m alright with it winning.
