Overwatch

This is shit tier level art/writing. (:_(

Back when the game was lauched I expected they would explore the lore bit by bit. The animated shorts showed a lot of potential. But then they kept spitting these fucking comics, one worse than the other.

Given the different skills of the heroes, they also had the potential for making indie-like games exploring other genres and reaching more public, like LoL is doing.

Before I was hungry for every bit of new lore, now I fear anything they develop because it's such low quality shit...

I wish I was as emotionally invested in LoL as I still am in Overwatch. Arcane and Ruined King were really fun to watch/play. LoL fans are lucky.

Editing to add that they did this McCree name change the most exceptional way possible. These idiots have already stated that McCree is prone to using fake names since the beginning and they didn't exploit this characteristic to justify the sudden name change, they just forcefed the new name with no glimpse of an excuse in lore. I'm mad.

One would expect the comics to have lore we don't already know, but instead we get 99% rehash and maybe one tiny fact, like that people still write letters in the future. Stupid Overwatch creators. They could at least hire better artists so we get some eye candy for our troubles.

I would complain more but my team of Evil Meis need to go harass an innocent Winston-yeti. For science! ❄️

Ouch, that makes it sound like Battlefield 2042 somehow has better lore than the recent bits of lore Overwatch has spit out. And that game's lore sets the bar very low.

What are you guys on about? They had no freaking idea about the "lore" and wrote shit as they went, thats why they kept retconning stuff like Reaper being "revived" by Mercy being changed into "it was this new character you never heard about before lol".
Then again I didn't care about the comics after the roadhog and junkrat one, the 'IM GAY' Tracer comic turned me off from reading any further OW comics.

There was an idea for a larger, overarcing storyline, and then they stopped using them and the main writer has been gone for a few years. Admittedly, even when he was around, the vast majority of the stories were some variation of "Robot prejudice... is wrong?!" so there wasn't a ton of meat on those bones to begin with. But there was substantial controversy that they weren't using the writers ideas to the point he ragequit the company a little before Kaplan did.

Dyke Tracer is cool though and I like her ginger gf.

I remember when D.Va's cinematic dropped. I think it was a while past the game's release and people had been starved for content. The cinematic introduced new characters, fleshed out her side of the world a little bit (giving her a mechanic to help with her MEKA, acknowledging she wasn't the only pilot in the country, nodding to her popularity, and also fleshing out her character a little more), and was generally really good stuff. A juicy bit of fluff to go alongside the gameplay. And in all honestly, that's all Overwatch needed to push out: good fluff pieces.

The fandom they attracted who enjoyed the game outside of the gameplay itself were fine to imagine their own stories and head-canons, all they really needed was a few jumping off points every so often. And for Blizzard to work that into its game now and again - more events in the vein of Archives would have been enough. They didn't need heavy lore - the bulk of their audience were casuals after all. It was a really different beast to how I hear fans of WoW speak about story and character development, etc. I just don't think they ever realized what they had. In more ways than one.

And yes, the McCree name change is quite possibly one of the stupidest things they have done, and that's saying a lot. I, too, am mad. Still.

its sad the lore got ignored since it had a very good build up at the start and alot to work with. i was sorta hopping they would do it like team fortress 2 but in a much greater scale. alas, it got ignored in favor of e-sports.
E-sports gutted this game from the get-go. I remember the first time there was a proper content draught, the excuse was "all of our resources are being poured into the OWL!"

From then on, the game never recovered. There was a glimpse of hope when they dropped the first Archives event but things never panned out after that.

I think the OWL has more skins available per-character than the base game, including all event outfits. All locked behind a currency you either purchase or earn by (shudders) watching the OWL. And they're mostly recolors of the default skins. As someone who still plays this game, I almost never see these skins in action. But we definitely needed 2-3 skin recolors per team over 2-3 skin recolors of legendries that are less niche and more accessible to people's rampant desire to dress up their murderous wifeu/husbando machines.

I'm mad.

I thought he had still be revived by Mercy, he just got tested on further by Moira? ...Why do I still care when Blizzard doesn't?

This bitch is basically Brigitte design-wise. Wise they had bitten the bullet and just combined the two characters so we could play as her. Because with lore and story being as sparse as it is, having named characters be playable feels like the obvious choice.

But the same could be said for the Junker Queen, buff and edgy The Rock from Moana, the unnamed character from the last substantial Archives update, Mama Hong, Jetpack Cat, the chick who's been in development since before OW2 and will never see the light of day much like OW2...

no one really cares (or rather cared) about WoW lore either, certainly not the horde of casuals that came into the game after it became popular (you can probably guess how many of those played wc 1-3). it also wasn't offensively retarded yet and mainly existed as an excuse to do what you did.

lol all the recolors were free in battleborn. how much money did OW make again in it's first year?

I wonder if those "artists" and "writers" are outsourced or its just current lvl of bliz employees is that sad. Employ the fans", well it seems that bliz indeed employed fans. From twatter.
Many comic book companies are hiring artists from South America and Poor Asia, but in this case, the artist is Irene Koh, a trust fund baby who is just a lazy shit artist.

iirc some skins and other stuff were outsourced because blizzard "was busy with OWL". remember quite a bit of hubbub about it, I think it was their excuse for slim mei.

Mei wasn't designed to be fat, and only became a chunk because tumblr co-opted the character.

Mei Concept art. I think the last image (or some variation of it) is in the game as a spray.

yeah, I meant when they modeled the skin "to spec" it came out as it was supposed to be (although I think there were some model/clipping issues), after tumblr having their daily spergfit blizzard was quick to deflect along the lines of "we totally agree! but it wasn't as us, it was a dumb contractor who doesn't reflect the values of blizzard™, WE would never do such a thing because we're so woke! btw buy more loot boxes!"

which reminds me, did tumblr ever sperg out about pharaoh's thunderbird skin? after all you got a middle eastern culturally appropriating native american style - or was it ok because they're both brown?

Like with Mei and that weird cornrows skin, Blizzard had been pretty cool about telling these people to more or less go fuck themselves when they pull this shit. They "revealed" her Dad to be a native Canadian "and that's why we did that, dual heritage!", but it was clearly a retcon everyone saw through but they never addressed it again. As far as the Mei shit and "whitewashing" in general, I can't recall any response from them that wasn't some variation of 'go fuck yourselves'.

The lore was extremely lackluster and it was clearly an afterthought. A lot of characters "borrow" lore from existing archtypes/characters in other media as well and it winds up being really hollow.

I'm not sure how you could write a boring story that involves a super squad of mega soldiers (including a hamster, a gigantic gorilla, and a robotic monk) but Blizzard seems to have done exactly that.

Gah, I remember people spazzing about Mei not being fat enough. It's like they couldn't comprehend that a character wearing a heavy coat might not be that bulky underneath it.
I mean you would think people knew this right considering how simple Overwatch's lore people would understand that when you work in the Arctic you don't go outside with a raincoat. It's crazy how you have to explain to people why her coat specifically designed to work in extremely cold climate is bulky and why she probably want's that big under the coat itself.
