Overwatch

🎇Lunar New Year has been a thing for a few days now.🎆

Couple of the new things are nifty, but I dunno. There's a lack of overall excitement that can't just be chalked up to my own apathy.
Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't HoTS, a game that explicitly is on maintenance and supposedly has only two devs working on it, released a new hero more recently than Overwatch?

I think Hogger came out in late 2020 and Echo was around April of that year. They really have just stopped whatever momentum the game had in it's tracks.

Apparently they only released 2 legendary skins for the event with four time-gated recolors this year, whilst promising "more skins than ever" in 2022. [Article]

There is no one with more apathy to this game than Blizzard themselves. The game is effectively dead since no new characters have been added in two whole years. They just keep adding skins as a cheap, easy way to milk the few remaining whales that keep buying loot boxes.

The team handling Overwatch care so little that when they decided to rename Jessie McCree to Cole Cassidy they didn't even bother to Google the name to make sure it wasn't associated to something that might be embarrassing, I mean they are renaming the character because of allegations of sexual misconduct so what better choice for a new name than that of a flip of a porn actress named Cassidy Cole. :story:

Also, I don't think a lot of people are excited for an event with skins that are a constant reminder of Blizzard's worshiping and knee bending towards the Chinese.

You want to know what's funny? There is this game called "Paladins" that a lot of people accused of being a discount Overwatch clone because it is a F2P hero shooter, but not only has that game been receiving content updates and new heroes with unique mechanics continually over the last two years ( 53 characters as of this post) it has been improving in quality constantly. It is being developed by a far smaller team and with a smaller budget than anything Blizzard has and yet it is in far healthier condition than Overwatch is now.

You're giving Paladins a bit too much credit here - it's still incredibly unpolished, and most of the heroes they add tend to be either complete dogshit or stupidly overpowered when they get added.

It also has one of the worst matchmaking systems I've ever seen in a multiplayer shooter, to the point where players refer to it more as a roulette than an actual matchmaking system. I remember queueing for a competitive match as a low platinum (might've even been a high gold, not 100% sure) with <50 hours in the game, where I then got thrown into a match with people that were in masters and had over 1000 hours in the game.

I'm so fucking annoyed that I already have all of the new drops from a good like 3 hours of play except for the goddamn weekly ones that I have to keep coming back for.

The matchmaking system in Paladins actually feels like it's hard forcing a 50% win rate, given the massive swings in game and teammate quality.

Its a hirez game, they always do that. Smite is plagued with shitty matchmaking, would often find a silver 5 on a team when I was in D2. In 1v1 one of my placement games was against a masters, which was annoying at first, until he picked chronos (because he is so op) and I took my normal Chaac in and fucking wrecked the tyde loving shitebag.

Paladins follows the hirez workflow of throwing shit at the wall and maybe fixing it later as long as it's functional. They've gotten better at it over the years and some of their characters are pretty well made for some roles like supports not being a straight up heal sluts.

Thing about hirez is that they tend to stay in their lane and don't throw all their money at grandiose marketing compared to blizzard nor is their quality near that of blizzard (once) fame. Even newer stuff like Rouge Company is doing fine cause their bar isn't set to make a line of funko pops and cereal.

OW never really goes crazy even at times where it should have with modes or characters but keeps the polish while hirez just says "Give that monk a fucking shotgun and a wall" while having no real story and rework him twice later.

Lucio ball, Yeti hunt, and CTF could only do so much for so long and OW characters dont have the flexibility like Paladins character do so the gameplay just gets stale quicker.

Hirez still botch a ton of shit though so you can't give them too much credit.

One of the biggest reasons I quit ranked and then the game itself was Smite's matchmaking.

Hirez may be shit but they at least know their audience and demographic. They give characters fat fucking boobs and even jiggle physics.

New short story about Reaper doing stuff is out. Lot of fanfic writers gonna be annoyed.

I’ve always called it “Palashits: mediocrity of the realm”. It’s supposed to be this cool magical world and then they just have a gun toting guy. Eat my fuck.
