Overwatch

Overwatch 2 is dying faster as a F2P game than as a retail priced game. OW doesn't deserve this, but the people managing it are killing it.

I don't know the problem with overwatch is it attracted gamers but also SJWs and Blizzard hard fucking leaned into that audience. Catered their whims and fantasies of lore (omg a man being a faggot is considered lore now). I was watching a video where this retard said Overwatch's lore is like fucking Dark Souls because voice lines. The problem is with this audience is they are feverant and react with feelings. Blizzard lost most of thier gamers with overwatch in 2019 due to no content.

I think this may actually be it though for Blizzard they actually have nothing now.
Warcraft - dead, they have bled players and even an OK expansion has bought no players back. The game will probably continue to lose players annually now.
Hearthstone - dead, the monthly maus for that game continue to plunge. They cannot even get 2k people watching the world finals on Youtube. They have begun charging higher for packs to minimise and mask the loss to investors.
Starcraft - really fucking dead, 2 killed all faith in that game.
Warcraft RTS - never happening
Diablo - Is their last title but the amount of cope with that game is so high and people are so against giving Blizzard money.
Overwatch's coverage now is going to drop so fast and i would not be surprised if a lot of the big teams just outright shutter.

This is the price of arrogance but also what happens when you don't challenge a CEO for decades, the rot sets in and is inoperable. The companies execs become so emboldened and an extension of Bobby's ideals. They used muh diversity to hire a bunch of speds and mask the issues and we are here.

It's easy to just blame Bobby Kotick, but the rot was there way before the merger.

When people talk about Blizzard being "great" - they tend to have rose colored glasses. Outside of Warcraft - they had Starcraft (which was decent) and Diablo 2 (which, when people say it was "great" they mean the Diablo 2 expansion Lord of Destruction was great).

If you look at the games they were already working on during the acquisition - WoW : Cataclysm, Starcraft 2 (Wings of Liberty, aka 1/3rd of the campaign), and Diablo 3 - games that were already in production and free of Activision's "taint" - Blizzard as we knew it had already been long dead.

It's more an issue of not keeping talent happy and where they need to be. Ion is not the game director that is going to save WoW and is a big part of it's downward trajectory. Overwatch (and Titan before it) could not keep a creative vision or game director to save it's life. Diablo has gone through several game directors as well, but Jay Wilson (responsible for the entire Diablo 3 shitshow) was a Blizzard hire.

Blizzard was already destorying their legacy before they got acquired. Even the aggressive monetization that often gets thrown at Activion's feet is likely a Blizzard move. The Diablo 3 Real Money Auction House was 100% a Blizzard idea.

They would have to increase monetization drastically because they were paying huge teams tons of money to release shit products (or in the case of Project Titan, Starcraft Ghost, Diablo Hades, etc). They were burning money faster than World of Warcraft could likely bring it in and after Cata that money was not guaranteed.

It's telling when even Reddit is telling Schreier to fuck off. I think the Jannies have either given up or fallen asleep.

For reasons that are just fucking retarded, no one ever wants to blame The Developers. Anything that goes wrong with a video game is always the fault of "those no good executives". Yeah, the executives want to see a return on investment, but at the rate video games keep shitting the bed, we can't keep giving "the uwu baby precious developers" a free pass.

In mildly related news, Blizzcon 2023 is going to be a thing. I get this feeling this isn't going to go as well as they're hoping...

The only thing I have to say to the company is that if you don't want to do the job, don't take the job. Don't promise stuff you can't or won't provide. Pretty sure this is entry level knowledge. Probably some laws against it too.

Reddit jannies were working their asses off to delete angry posts, and the company shills were at work shaming anyone expressing wrongthink, though not as many as when OW turned into OW2. Lots of "lol you're mad about something? You're just wrong." type posts. China operates like this, and as an American it is sickening to see it.

Blizzcon needs to be boycotted. That is, unless a group wants to spread some Summer Of Love 2020 type joy.

To be fair - the current game director isn't the one who made those promises, that would have fallen on the old one (who is no longer with the company) but it also just speaks to Blizzard's inability to maintain strong leadership.

When a game is sprialing out of control like Overwatch/Titan was for literally it's entire lifespan - someone above "Game Director" needs to step in and right the ship; which never happens at Blizzard.

Blizzard is also dying on the vine without any innovation, which has always been a huge problem for them. They didn't invent RTS games, WoW took a lot of lessons from Ultima/Everquest, Overwatch from TF2, HS from MTG, and so on.

They existed really well as a smaller company that was probably the best in the business of "We made <EXISTING GAME> but polished it and made it way better" but they just never have once excelled in the realm of "We are innovators and thought leaders in the industry".

You can see it plainly in the games where Blizzard has no homework to copy off of; when WoW killed off all it's competition you can see that Blizzard had no way to innovate and just tried recycling the same content and formulas endlessly. Diablo 3 was insultingly bad and Diablo 4 looks to be taking some cliff notes from Path of Exile now. Starcraft 2 was almost Starcraft 1 1:1 in a nicer engine with a much worse story.

I glanced at reddit again and have now forbidden myself from reading over there lest the temptation to fedpost gets too strong.

There are a suspicious amount of replies over there that are just, "Heh heh no child, you are incorrect in your feelings and opinions. Stop expressing such thoughts immediately. You are being foolish and bringing shame to yourself."

We paid money for a game. Activision Blizzard took what we paid for away and gave us something that we would never have purchased and are trying to belittle us for noticing.

They will face no consequences for this.

I am bothered.

you mean the same bobby that is in charge of activision and king which has none of those problems? how much titty-milk you think gets stolen at sledgehammer, infinity ward and treyarch?

almost like it has nothing to do with the man itself and it was blizzard slowly going more and more retard on their own (because remember, blizzard is le innovative industry leader with billions of satisfied customers!)

They will face no consequences for this.
that's why I want the microsoft purchase to fall through. I want those fuckers to eat shit when activision HAS to clean house after not getting saved by microsoft's fuck you money. because the "worst" thing that's gonna happen is they turn into another 343, and everybody knows what an unmanaged cesspit that's been for a decade now releasing crap after crap. at least they can't ruin those franchises any further, the dipshits already took care of that.

But it's FREE.
That's kind of the problem, and why us oldies are mad as hell.

We paid for a game.
Activision Blizzard took that game away from us.
They said they were going to make it (OW2) better, so a lot of us had a crumb of hope.
Then they do this shit.
The game we paid for was stolen when OW2 came out and replaced Overwatch.

Blizzard employees are laughing at us all. Sure, maybe not the janitor but the rest of 'em? Rolling their eyes, laughing, saying how we'll get over it, same as when a little kid gets upset over a dropped ice cream or a missed cartoon episode.

I shouldn't let it upset me but for some reason it really is. I personally haven't spent a single penny in that company's direction since the last time I bought loot boxes. I am getting mad on behalf of others, as well as remembering how much it sucked when we lost the original game.

"building a totally new game on top is hard enough"

for a gamesjourno he knows fuck all about game development.
otoh he's a games journo, meaning he can't cut it anywhere else, so it should be expected to have no clue about anything.

also always remember sleazebag schreier was conveniently silent while all the blizzard shit was happening, yet always eager to shit out his hot takes immediately on twitter.

but guys... are you excited for blizzcon 2023?....
I mean, I expect it to be amusing, but not in the way Blizzard is probably hoping for.

Speaking of, now that they're out of China - least I haven't heard anything on that front since their deal ran up - does that mean we're going to see more or less Winnie the Pooh cosplays?

That's Sigma with a Starwatch skin. Even with all these events and XP multipler days I forget to play OW anyway.
