Originally I was hesitant about getting Overwatch because everybody was going out of their way to call it the "New Team Fortress 2", or whatever, and generally marketing it like that to me in conversation. I have over 1200 hours in Team Fortress 2 that I've gathered over a period of five years. Usually when somebody attempts to get me to buy something by claiming I should only get it because it's the new and improved, cooler, shinier version of something nice I already own and appreciate well enough alone, usually my initial response is to politely ask them to fuck off.
But since the disaster with TF2's "Meat Your Match" update about a month or so ago, the game is really pretty much dead at this point so I figured I'd go ahead and give it a try.
Overwatch is great and I think the only real notable thing it has in common with TF2 is its class-based teamwork mechanics, which are still pretty unique on their own. They are still very different games that are unique in their own rights and I think calling it the "next TF2" is an unfair comparison for both games.
I've had the game for about a month or so now so I still haven't explored everything about it. I'm pretty competent with most of the characters right now but currently I main McCree and Mei (yeah I know, fuck me). It's actually really interesting to me because Mei is essentially Overwatch's answer to the TF2 pyro. I fucking hate everything about the pyro, from his overbuffed weapons (phlogistinator, backburner, etc.) and unbelievable hitbox range to his stupid character and the obnoxious fan arguments over whether or not he is a man or a woman (he's a man), the pyro is just awful to me, and I hate "hacky" no-skill classes like him in video games.
But I think Mei is fucking great, and I still haven't figured out why.
