Overwatch

I liked the art direction and the initial plot premise, but I think everything got bogged down by boring new ensemble cast characters while the plot didn't really go anywhere other than the ape calling in his friends to reform the Justice League Overwatch or whatever.

IMO, they should have kept it fairly lean in terms of characters to keep the plot/characterization focused, and instead elaborated on diversifying gameplay via different unique loadouts for the characters.

Gameplay balance is of course another issue (also emerging out of adding too many useless characters), but I think it's been talked about already before.

Gameplay is ok but the story in Overwatch was crap and didn't go well with the game, oh look it's Tracer and SHE'S A LESBIAN and why is she fighting her friend gorilla while trying to push some cart across an amusement park?, Wasn't she supposed to fight Big Bad Black Dude with a giant robotic fist and save the world so Robots Lives Matter don't riot again or something? What are the themes? Isn't this cyberpunk? How come everything looks like an apple product?

It got bogged down by being forced to be two things.

- An esport
- Easy/Simple

The characters are simple to a point where you can distill them down to their core abilities, no one has any meaningful gameplay besides "Hit your support button where approperiate, and shoot the enemy team". The maps are stripped down to a point where there's no sense of map control at all, it's solely about the objective. Most characters have a small skill ceiling (which boils down to shooting enemies in the head) with minor variations based on ability/role which renders the whole cast very "samey". It drastically limits teamwork in a game that's supposed to be teamwork driven.

The simplicity causes the lack of depth and the lack of depth is what hurts it as an esport and what hurts it as a casual game. A lack of depth also has the habit of making the "meta" very static, as it's very fast to figure out the best strategy and because the game is simple Blizz couldn't really do much but enforce role requirements (which makes it even simpler by further limiting team compositions).

It isn't remarkably fun to play because it's simple and not incredibly challenging and it doesn't offer much beyond a normal FPS. It's not fun to play or watch because it lacks dynamic layers to it's maps, characters, strategies, and metas.

The most fun I have playing it is playing Mystery Heroes since at least the dynamics are constantly changing. Outside of that, it's a simple game that's irritating to play without friends because you're stuck with randos who can't grasp "shoot -> head, stand -> objective, move -> payload".

Do people even play this game, or do they just make crappy pornographic fan-art of the characters?

The game looks awful, and I'd rather have to smell Ethan Ralph's gunt than spend more than 30 minutes playing it.
Lots of people do and as much as I personally dislike it, it sits in a comfy place for a lot of people who want a "light" version of a hero team game (like League, Valorant, CS:GO, or DOTA).

As much as I constantly talk about how great TF2 is - I could not imagine trying to get started in TF2 in fucking 2021. Overwatch is much easier to pick up and borrows a lot of it's "familiarity" from using the existing Tank / Healer / DPS framework from MMOs, RPGS, and aRPGs so even "new to shooter" players can have a pretty solid grasp of what to do on Match #1.

The game is also very flashy, over design, and cleverly engineered to make each player, secretly, feel good about -something- they're doing. Either through medals, no visible individual scoreboard, Play of the Game, or even getting a good ultimate there's a lot of potential "I feel good" moments for players to latch on to.

It's really bad now, the community servers are mostly gone/empty, you go to valve's dedicated servers and there's cheaters everywhere and some would impersonate you and try to votekick you. Missed the good ole days when there were just vanilla items and you play on your favorite server where you know everyone and talk shit on the mic.

The thousand yard stare helps sell the "Welp, guess I'm getting cancelled now!" realization she just had.
You know people give OW/Blizzard shit for SJW pandering but to their credit they've been hilariously dismissive in the past when people have given them shit about "muh appropriation". I'll laugh like hell if they completely don't acknowledge the sperging over this.

Heard Jeff Kaplan left haven't been keeping up with the game that much but man i bet he's glad. Seems they haven't gotten enough of getting their teeth kicked in by the very audience they're trying to pander to. Twitter sperging aside the skin looks strange to me i don't care about the hair but the lack of glasses threw me off.

Allegedly they were fucking with his idea for OW2 to be lore-based and were essentially just going to Activision up the whole thing so he ragequit the company. Unsure if true but sounds about as probable as anything else.
