Palworld - Everything you have ever wanted from a Pokemon game

  • Happy Easter!
New patch just dropped. Some of these are surprisingly nice.
  • Specifications have been changed so that you can move at extremely low speed even when you have exceeded the weight limit.
  • Specifications have been changed so that Pals who are manually assigned to a breeding farm will not become hungry and their manual assignments will not be removed.
  • Added several measures to prevent base Pals from getting stuck.
  • Fixed an issue where Pals would get stuck while transporting items and would drop them on the spot.
They actually quickly pushed through with some bugfixes and even some QoL. Surprising for a game people thought the devs would just take the money and run from.

Switched from single player to a friend's dedicated server and I'm surprised with how fast moving through the game is once you know what to do. Got from level 1 to level 20 in like 2 hours and that's while being inefficient because i had to fix my friend's absolutely garbage base.

I knew the game is relatively easy to speedrun but i wasn't expecting it to feel so.... natural? while doing it. On a side note, I only noticed now after starting over but the "2nd" area (the level 11-20 stretch) for every starting point has something valuable, which is really nice. Starting on the east side means that you get Mozzarinas for milk and Vanwyrm for a flier that increases temperature, while starting on the west means you get arsox for early 2 kindling and Galeclaws for speed gliding.

Had to restart and update the dedicated server lol.

No it does not, in a mechanical sense. On the other hand you're a fairly big developer crying about an early access game having bugs while washing Nintendo's balls and talking about how an anime episode is relevant to gameplay (it's not). If your example of empathy and warmth in the games is supplementary material then you're admitting the games themselves lack it.

So I've beaten the game in catching all Pals and killing the 5 bosses. There's still some bugs that are outside of the scope of the patches that dropped. For instance, enemy encounter music will constantly play even if there's absolutely nothing around you (usually stemming from using a fast travel totem while your Pal is fighting). Sometimes, your Pals will be constantly aggro'd. Sometimes, pathfinding for enemies is an issue (especially if you decide to put your base on more mountainous regions and get raided).

The grappling hook is still rubbish in my opinion - it's nowhere as fun to use as grappling hooks in Just Cause 3 or Dying Light (where grappling hooks are heavily featured), my Giga grappling hook still can't latch onto surfaces more than 5 meters away, and the hook doesn't hold onto surfaces. I presume that this will be fixed later.

I'm kind of disappointed that there's places where it's impossible to get to (there's a barrier preventing you from going to the huge tree at the top of the map), but I presume that it will be unlocked in future updates. There's some spots where trying to explore is incredibly hard to do (eg: Astral Mountain, where the sheer cliffs make it almost impossible to climb or grapple on to if you forgot to equip a Pal with the appropriate equiptment).

The game is worth buying at full price, due to its reasonable price and the amount of content you get while playing, but I'd still advise waiting for a sale because there's not a lot to do after kicking the 5 bosses' asses. The game looks nice at Ultra/Epic-comparable resolutions, and most of the graphical pop-in problems don't really happen unless you are using the glider from high altitudes and are sailing to the ground. There still is a problem with the light rendering (ambient occlusion) - on occasion, the game will go almost pitch black if you decide to step into the shadow of an environmental object (eg: mountain), and then go back to full brightness when you step out. This bug is more noticeable if it's towards dusk.

I had tons of fun kidnapping people MGS5-style and forcing them to work for me (and then mulching their friends/coworkers and feeding their bodies to them just so they can be incrementally stronger). There's also dark humor in butchering Pals in front of other Pals for no reason other than because it's funny - bonus points if you do it in front of the PIDF on one of the sanctuaries.

Sometimes, the game feels like Skyrim, only because of the sheer amount of mountain climbing you can do, and the whole "getting distracted and forgetting about the main quest" part. But again, after you complete the main quest, there's not a lot to do besides explore, breed, and fill out your Dex if you haven't already.

The game does get pretty grindy at times, but I do enjoy the similarity between this game and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, where you can let your Pal autonomously fight other Pals in the background while you're doing other shit.

I feel like there should be an enhancement/small buff for weapons, because it kind of gets a little tedious to dodge-roll attacks from the boss while the boss tanks over 75 rocket launchers to their face (even after putting the majority of skill points into Player Attack Damage) and wait for your player to slowly reload. For instance you can either have a single-slot to put an enhancement for a weapon or a rare charm to put on your person.

The world still feels pretty empty, which is good for exploring the environment, but not quite so nice if you want to indulge in more NPC story-driven elements present in other games such as Pokemon or LoZ (eg: talking to townspeople where they tell more about the location, lore, etc.). Again, there's no side quests as of yet, so the grind is basically the game.

I did still enjoy my time with Palworld, though.

What's your favorite pals? I'll start.

I love Wumpo and all his variants. I got his green type and I named him Bumpo.
Just look at this guy, he's just so fluffy. The Paldex says that he and his Wumpo Botan are made entirely of hair/grass.

I haven't looked at any spoils for the Pals in the game, but I hope that this fluffy guy gets more variants.

For anyone still using berries to feed their Pals, try using salad. I think it fills the Pals hunger meter more and it gives them a boost in work speed. My base has two tomato and lettuce farms which seem to be doing the trick.

Hyper aggressive powerhouse who can just beef it’s way through elemental attacks.

Sassy gremlin child that will float beside you a zap shit even with another Pal out.

And Flambelle was the first Pal I rescued from an enemy base. Immediately won me over.

Huh, they really do listen to feedback, these are actually almost all the issues I've repo-
・Added support for mouse side keys and numeric keypad in keyboard key configuration.
*Further improvements are currently planned, such as support for interact key configuration.
I fucking kneel, this could have been the whole patch and I wouldn't mind at all. Numpad lives matter. AUGH YEAH

Checked SteamCharts, and it seems like the hype's beginning to die down, though in this case, we might be reaching the last stretch of the pokeclone cycle until the next big update comes around where all the pokemon fans who hyped it up as the next "Pokemon Killer" start fucking off while the actual fans of the game stay for the ride, though I came to this conclusion as the peak and minimum numbers have steadily gone down the past few days. But since Pocket Pair got a multi million success under thier belt now, they have no reason not to keep going with the updates, and that's good for them.

That's just the natural player life cycle of nearly all games nowadays. Really popular launch, lots of hype and players, starts to drizzle out after while because most people have an attention span of a goldfish and that reflects in the Steam stats. It'll definitely get a spike when a big new update comes out.

Same, she's been my little battle buddy for the past few days. The cute pals are what's been keeping me from going full RimWorld in my bases.

So far the biggest con for me in this game is having to hold F to craft. I currently have a weight holding down the F key while I make 500 rounds of musket ammo. This REALLY needs to be a toggle.

Which is a fucking shame, but even on non-hyped games you see “boot the game” achievements receiving 50% conpletion rates. So it’s really not surprising, even if I did want Palworld to beat out PUBG for most-played Steam game. It still may in the future, as you said. A sufficient content update may be enough to shock the game to 3.5M+ concurrent players. Till then they can be happy with the silver medal and the multi-million dollar success.

My first Alpha Pal and the winner of cutest cat-snake in all of Palworld:

My bro Chillet, seriously. Have you seen his cooling animation yet? He’s just a sleepy little shit, I love it.

Not to mention I’d argue a lot of the Pokemon games lack warmth is honestly because the players kept graduly asking for more and more optimisation. And the more and more you do that the more you attachment just dies slowly because the game does not really let you look at them any more as living things.

The more polished and refined Pokemon has become in terms of gameplsy the more lifeless it’s become.

I am not surprised that Nuzzlockes - challenges that force you to by and large discard all of that qol - are so fun and liked as content. Yet a lot of content creators don’t seem to grasp that.

Pal World starting from a point of ‘i want to find cute thing and see how it reacts to slavery’ avoids that pitfall because it’s gameplay and narrative are on the same page in regards to what Pal’s are from the start and later QoL stuff as a result is unlikely to change that.

Removing HMs and putting all your travsial options in one mon was a mistake. Etc etc

Just throw one pal of your team into the workbench that has handcraft skill and problem solved. If you have the food bag already, it will be crafting non-stop day and night unless you leave your base, go to sleep or there is a raid in course. The toggle would be a great addition but in the meantime that is what I do

New random dev pissy about PalWorld.
I play this game like an absolute soft idiot I am - didn't unlock cleaver at all, don't overwork my Pals, build bases focused on being comfy for them instead of full efficiency etc.
You can definitely "connect" with those little guys, I'd argue more than in Pokemon, since they're always on and about, doing something cute or defending me.

99% of the caught Pokemon just sit lifelessly in the box forever. Most of the cutesy Mons that don't evolve are absolutely useless and give you no reason to bond with them.

Which reminds me I need to make an AHK script to hold down F when a button combo (maybe CTRL+F) is pressed. Cakes take way too damn long and I wanna help even a little bit as I AFK for egg hatches.

"This game doesn't let you emotionally connect with your indentured workforce!"
You can say this about most Pokémon games and it be 100% accurate in a mechanical sense, but he’s also completely wrong because only an autist needs specific mechanics to become emotionally attached to their partners.

If anything this game is MORE emotionally investing than Pokémon, because here you’re traversing a 3D landscape with your Pal and fighting off bad guys together, rather than in Pokémon where you use your indentured slave “friend” as a meat shield. Not to mention TPC only wants me to financially emotionally invest in the “right” Pokémon.

Also tf does DbD staff know of emotional investment in vidya.

99% of the caught Pokemon just sit lifelessly in the box forever. Most of the cutesy Mons that don't evolve are absolutely useless and give you no reason to bond with them.
And in Palworld, you take any extra Pals and combine them with your fave Pal to make a super Pal, so that requires some level of attachment to at least one, and non-combat Pals are good for basework. While with Pokémon 80%+ of the Pokédex is just sitting in a cloud server, lifelessly frozen as data.

And any kind of things GF has done to try and make you use more mons has frequently been met with people not playing them, regardless of the quality of the content,

And if they tie Pokemon to those mechanics or modes the players hate those mons even more.

GF should really add to the autobattle feature and the Pokemon attacking you that wsd in Arceus so that it actually feels like they are defending you. Or add type passives. So they can be used in the overworld or to help with gameplay. Like a less restrictive version of HMs. Just have them built into the mon,

Which is a benefit I find to a smaller dex. You could put in the time to make all flying Pokemon be usable to fly in the overworld for example, fire pokemon setting things on fire etc a few games like and the entire roster would be there. But alas they didn’t. Despite having 17-18 types a Pokemon being a certain type really does not matter. Like, I’m sure they could make it so each type could do something to help make catching or battling Pokemon easier. Maybe poision and ghost make you more stealthy. Ground allows you to set pitfalls. Etc.

If they keep doing the open world eventually I think the mons you have will need to be able to interact with it.

Especially now towns serve no purpose. You carry your box of mons with you everywhere, your items and healing are just got without going into a designated building or talking to people and honestly because you can get everywhere on story given mounts I’ve found that I don’t actually look for Pokemon for the job. Because the job can be done auto.

Older Pokemon games team building was done around the fact that you needed mons that could travel the world but they also needed to be able to compliment each other. You stopped needing to do that in Sun and Moon. Sure people were thankful for it but you don’t really realise why having those restrictions was important until a few games of not having them. I am however a big fan of when the game is completely done all restrictions are lifted. But until then I think GF could do with being restrictive and hindering.
Not to mention TPC only wants me to financially emotionally invest in the “right” Pokémon.
To be fair, that’s only because those are the only Pokemon players care about. Having 1000+ is an issue.

And honestly they should Dexit in the way Ruby/Saphire and Black/White did every couple of years.

I like being able to carry some mons over and have them all stored but most of them are just ‘doing this cause Oak is lazy, you are number 56 so you go in slot 56 in the box, bye’
And in Palworld, you take any extra Pals and combine them with your fave Pal to make a super Pal, so that requires some level of attachment to at least one, and non-combat Pals are good for basework. With how sutistic complex breading in Pokemon was..,I’m surprised Pokemon hasn’t yet done, ‘completely new mon was made as a result’

Like, they’ve known about HSOWA for like 20 years abd yet I can’t bread a giant pink cat whale? Come on.

I'm surprised that this angry gorilla can churn out so much damage. They all have the Hooligan skill which increases ATK by 15%.
I managed to roll one with both Brave and Musclehead which gives 10% and 30%, respectively.
The result is an angry gorilla that can go higher than 1400 ATK

This boy can go even higher. I expect him to carry me through the rest of the bosses.
