I can easily believe that he had fun writing the book. It was low effort slop, meaning that he never went through the difficult and challenging phases of revision where you take an honest look at what you've written and work to make it better. Not a single person at my university even knows this guy even wrote a book. Unless he's handing it out at his local university no one is teaching it. This is just him fluffying up his ego. His is a personality you see very often in genre fiction, but in short he is a guy who wants to write for Futurama and Dr. Who and this is as close as he can get to that. Hack stories work more in TV that knows they're shitty than when you're sitting next to Hyperion and The Forever War.
