And also due to the fact that up to this point Ralph has made it a point to be buzzed or wasted every waking moment of his life, even when driving his newborn daughter down the freeway on interstate trips. If his plan is to just replace drugs with an all-alcohol menu of mood altering options, I can see some holes in that.

He shouldn’t be “cutting back,” he should be getting sober from drugs and alcohol. Alas, Ethan Ralph lacks the courage to sober up and start feeling the unrelenting shame his existence brings when he’s not wasted.

I’d bet he thinks he’s got it all figured out, how to beat those piss tests, and the “I’m going clean” bullshit is just for show. Maybe his foolproof plan is to increase his meth usage from a few times a week to daily. That’s as clean as this wigger skank will ever get.

He "attended" about 2 and a half AA meetings before calling it quits. Ethanol Liver Ralph is a the Platonic ideal of a polysubstance abuser. He can't "just drink" or "just smoke marijuana". He has to have it all - Maker's, weed, cocaine, meth, gambling, broken teenage BPD pussy. He might be able to give up one or a few of these things for a while, but he'll just come back to them with a vengeance when he picks up the next time.

I didn’t know he’d gone to AA. Honestly even if he keeps drinking, he’s better off continuing going to the meetings. “Keep coming back” is an AA slogan for a reason, and it applies as much (if not more) to active alcoholics than to anyone else.

What he needs is a chemical detox because his body will go into all kinds of shock from withdrawals that requires medical observation and attention more often than not. Certainly an aspect of getting sober is maintaining that sobriety. That requires willpower (which he clearly doesn't have) to deny himself of his unhealthy escapist appetites.
